On our way back home from Los Feliz last night, we were cruising down Hollywood Boulevard and noticed a giant gleaming W sign in the distance. It could only mean one thing--W Hollywood Hotel and Residences is getting close to opening.

The official opening date is not until January 15, 2010 (pushed back from December 3 and reservations don't start until January 28) but the hotel is nearing completion, at least on the exterior.

We took some late-night shots for you which you can peruse in our gallery here. The place is going to be massive, especially since there are residences attached to the building and a Red Line metro stop that runs through the building.

The location is proper Hollywood on Hollywood Boulevard, between Vine and Argyle with the Pantages Theater directly across the street with plenty of nightclubs as well as the Hollywood and Highland complex within walking distance.

Don't worry. This is just a construction shot of Drai's. It's not the finished product.

As we eagerly await the opening of The W Hollywood on December 3, we've got word that construction on the hotel's nightclub, Drai's Hollywood--a spin-off of the legendary Las Vegas club--has begun. The club's construction firm, R.D. Olson sent us this press release with some detes:

Drai’s Hollywood will include an intimate 2,331-square-foot VIP lounge on ground level with a private VIP entrance separate from the hotel’s public lobby entry; a 21,552-square-foot penthouse glassed-in bar on the 11th floor with a 1,000-square-foot open air balcony; and an adjacent 2,131-square-foot rooftop pool deck and bar. The total capacity of Drai’s Hollywood will be 792 occupants.

Wollywood Gets A Little Help From Depeche Mode

Where: 6282 Hollywood Boulevard [map], Hollywood, CA, United States, 90028

The W Hollywood won't be opening until November but thanks to Depeche Mode, the upcoming hotel will be the backdrop for a free concert that the band is holding this Thursday for the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" show. The LA Times reports:

Concert planners say the event is designed to both promote the band's new "Sounds of the Universe" album and world tour as well as the "return of Golden Age excitement and lifestyle" to Hollywood with the new W Hotel. The $350-million development, scheduled for completion this fall, includes a 305-room hotel and 143 adjoining luxury condominiums that will come with hotel concierge service.

Sadly, all the free tix to the concert are gone but you can still get a chance to attend by listening to KROQ-FM (106.7) for chances to win tickets. Also, Kimmel's in-studio audience at the nearby El Capitan Entertainment Center will be able to attend.

W Hollywood Tops Out And Throws A Rooftop Party

December 4, 2008 at 5:10 PM | by Jenna | 1 Comment

There's tons of hotel news flying around this week and we don't have time to give each and every story the love and attention it may deserve, so you will have to settle for some news briefs.

· W Hollywood is Up: The W Hollywood celebrated the completion of their vertical construction with a rooftop bash. We can expect a HUGE party when the whole hotel is finished in November 2009. [Curbed LA]

· Munich Prison to Become Hotel Social Project: An old women's prison in Munich is set to become a 4-star hotel to be run by at-risk teens. Yup. [TheLocal]

· Scariest Hotel Concept Ever: A Russian architecture firm has designed a futuristic hotel concept called Aerotel, which looks a bit like the most terrifying jellyfish you've ever seen ... crossed with an angry spaceship floating above water. [DeviceDaily]

· Hilton San Diego Bayfront Now Open: After a bit of a rocky construction period, the Hilton San Diego Bayfront opens its doors today. Yay!

Curbed LA has some pics of the upcoming W Hotel and Residences going up at Hollywood and Vine. The detes:

305-room W Hotel, 143 for-sale W Residences, 375 apartment units, 61,500 square feet of street level retail, and a three-story subterranean garage.

Renderings of the W Hotel's interior can be found on the website which has totally annoying music.

Wollywood Already Disrespecting Hollywood

Where: Hollywood Boulevard [map], Hollywood, CA, United States, 90028
August 9, 2007 at 2:51 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

The W Hollywood, which we here at HotelChatter like to refer to as Wollywood, has already disrespected Hollywood's great stars and the place hasn't even been built yet.

But it's getting closer to construction time, hence the removal of 61 Walk of Fame stars from Hollywood Boulevard.

The LA Times reports:

Hollywood security guard Lillian Price marched determinedly along the Walk of Fame, anxious to investigate this missing person case personally.

She walked past William Bendix's brass star, past William Powell's, past George Sanders'. She stopped short in front of Ann Sothern's polished terrazzo sidewalk square and stared through the barricade on the Vine Street sidewalk.

"They're gone!" Price exclaimed. "The stars are gone -- they're missing in action!" Charlton Heston, Jane Wyman, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Donna Reed, Frank Sinatra and 55 other Hollywood celebrities were missing Wednesday from the Walk of Fame in the 1600 block of Vine Street.

Wow those are some pretty big stars. Why couldn't it have been Britney Spears and David Spade's stars? Even worse, in removing all these stars, eight of 'em actually crumbled. But a project manager for Webcor Builders said the stars will be rebuilt. For now, the cement stars are in a secure place in downtown LA and will be returned to Vine Street when Wollywood opens which is sometime in 2009.

Until then, there will be a crapload of construction going on around Hollywood and Vine as the building of Wollywood along with retail stores and condos continues.

Hotel Hype: Wollywood?

Where: Hollywood and Vine [map], Hollywood, CA, United States
April 19, 2006 at 9:35 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

We always thought that Westwood, next to UCLA and the freeway, was an odd location for the W Hotel's Los Angeles property. Why not Sunset Boulevard next to the other chic boutique hotels like the Standard and the Mondrian?

So when the brand announced last June that it was opening a brand new hotel on the historic Hollywood and Vine intersection, we thought they would be able to redeem themselves.

Now the W has finally got permission from the city to start building. The W Hollywood or Wollywood as we like to call it will have 300 rooms and 150 condos, restaurant, a rooftop bar, spa and 25-yard lap pool--costing a total of $500 million to build.

From the looks of the rendering, it seems as if this W will be the W Times Square of the West Coast, but let's hope with bigger rooms and a less frightening lobby. Oh yeah, wire it with free WiFi and that would be even better.

By the way, is that one of Vikram's models on the billboard?

W Heads to Hollywood

"Spend all my time at Hollywood & Vine...."

Looks like W took Kid Rock seriously. This week W Hotels Worldwide officially announced plans for a new The W Hollywood Hotel & Residences will hold ground at one of LA's most famous (read: heavily trafficked with fanny-packed tourists) intersections: Hollywood and Vine. The W Hollywood will sit right alongside the Kodak theatre, the site of the Oscars. So book now for the 2008 Oscars and score yourself a balcony overlooking all the red carpet action!

The Wollywood (yeah, we just said that) will feature approximately 300 rooms and 150 W Residences, a signature restaurant, a rooftop bar, branded 9200-square-foot spa and 25-yard lap pool.

The W Hollywood will also offer W Hotel's signature Living Room experience, which is defined as "a place where guests, residents and L.A. insiders will sip and socialize on the adjoining outdoor terrace and rooftop club."

We can just imagine the Lohan / Simpson rooftop party feud now.
