El San Juan Hotel Makes Some Changes, Now that It's a Waldorf-Astoria Property
Puerto Rico's El San Juan Hotel & Casino has joined the Waldorf-Astoria gang, which means that hotel is seeing some changes. It has a new burger joint, special introductory rates and a resort fee.
The biggest change is the newly instituted daily resort fee. The fee is 14 percent of the room rate. That means if you get a $159 garden double room, the resort fee is $22.26; a $219 city-vista room carries a $30.66 fee. But you don't get much for it. The fee covers daily live entertainment, fitness center access and poolside activities.

The Waldorf-Astoria is Worlds Away from Its Newer, Flashier Siblings
Our very own hotel Agent Zero returns with yet another review. Her not-real name is Myra Ellen and she's our version of Alex Goran who travels once a week for business, usually along the Eastern seaboard. Every so often, she'll be dropping in with her latest hotel and travel observations. In this episode, she's saddened by the flagship Waldorf-Astoria, which seems to be stuck in a time from long, long ago while newer better spin-offs keep popping up all over the world.
I checked in to The Waldorf Astoria in New York recently. I was there to meet an old friend in town for a conference; we had planned to share a room at a $299/night event rate. Sitting on the check-in desk was a small sign, advertising "Historic Tours of the Hotel, $50 per person." Throughout my stay, I kept wondering, "Who does that?"
Our upgraded room was in the main hotel and not the fresher, somewhat nicer Towers. It was comfortable and spacious with an entry hallway and our favorite feature: an enormous dressing room with a chaise, mirrored dressing table and French doors leading up one step up into the large bathroom. (We did have to make a special request for bathrobes.)
That dressing room felt like a movie set from another era and inspired multiple conversations about favorite classic movies, glamorous stars, satin mules, peignoir sets, train cases.

Stay In, Get Surgery at Waldorf Astoria's New UK Country Retreat

What do you do when you own one posh hotel in London? Open a country retreat just down the road and make it so self-sufficient - including a resident plastic surgeon - that your guests will never need to leave. That’s the plan according to Waldorf Astoria, anyway – they already have a London property – the Bentley in Knightsbridge – but they’re opening a second one, Syon Park, out by Kew, in November.
According to the website, it’s being billed as “the English country playground as only Waldorf Astoria could dream it” (with a Midsummer Night’s Dream-ish picture to boot).
It’s in the grounds of Syon House – a 200 acre park that already houses the Duke of Northumberland, in between London and Heathrow, and just across the water from Kew Gardens.

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai On The Bund Will Open On September 15
When we first heard about Waldorf Astoria coming to Shanghai, we were irrationally excited, and now we've seen renderings like this one of a Waldorf Astoria Club Suite, we're going to call our excitement perfectly rational. The icing on the cake? The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund is now taking reservations for September 15 and beyond.
This is the first Waldorf Astoria Hotel for China, and the hotel is opening in two stages. The Waldorf Astoria Club building is the one opening first, in the building that used to house The Shanghai Club.

Waldorf Astoria Resorts Break Out a 'Luxury Manifesto'
Last night we headed over to the Waldorf-Astoria in New York to attend an event celebrating 85 years of New Yorker covers. We love New Yorker covers so we were perfectly happy enjoying the blow-up prints placed throughout the Hilton ballroom. But after mingling for a little while, we were surprised with another reason for the night's soiree, the introduction of the Waldorf-Astoria Luxury Manifesto.
Fortunately for all of us, it is much easier to understand than the woeful Thompson Manifesto. Explained by John Vanderslice, who is in charge of Hilton's two luxury brands--Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts and Conrad Hotels & Resorts--the Luxury Manifesto will be a "living, breathing initiative" in which Vanderslice will go around asking other luxury brands how they stay relevant and what luxury means in the ever-changing world today.
Yes, this manifesto is done in living color. The New Yorker publisher Lisa Hughes was the inaugural manifesto guest to go on-camera and in her three-minute segment, she told Vanderslice that luxury is about staying true to your core values and finding new ways to reach your audience. (Of course, social media got a shout-out!)

Peeakboo Bathrooms and Sexy Photographs Are Not For Everyone
Chalk up another point for Team Enclosed Bathrooms. We know how many of you feel about the hotel trend that is not going away, Peekaboo Bathrooms, and most of you are against it.
Here's another gripe about the lack of privacy in the bathrooms at the newly renovated Reach Hotel which is actually now part of the Waldorf-Astoria Collection. Our reader also has a problem with the nude photographs in the restaurant. In short, this may not be the best hotel for families visiting Key West.

Is This The Dark Side of the Boca Raton Resort and Club?
When we think of Boca Raton, a popular warm getaway destination for the Northeast, we typically think of two things--Jerry Seinfeld's parents and the colors pink and beige, which is pretty much the color scheme for all major buildings down there.
Which is why we were surprised that the Boca Raton Resort and Club has a carpeting pattern that looks as if it was left over from the 70s. Indeed, HotelChatter Flickr Member TomBarnes20008 writes:
Don't get me wrong. I love the Boca Resort. Parts of the Tower, however, appear to be lost in a 1970s time warp. This is the lobby stairway carpeting in the Tower.

The Beach House at Manafaru Maldives is Now a Waldorf-Astoria Hotel

The Beach House at Manafaru Maldives recently joined the Waldorf Astoria Collection and got a new moniker, The Beach House Maldives. But the name isn't the only change that guests will see at the hotel.
As part of the Waldorf Astoria changeover, the hotel is going back to its roots and emphasizing Maldivian culture. Subtle changes will be shown in the decor, like the Maldivian architecture-inspired beds made of teak wood, and the spa will offer new treatments based on Maldivian holistic beliefs. But what we really want to check out is the Maldivian tea service in the new gallery featuring Indian Ocean artists.

Waldorf-Astoria Sarasota Mucked Up By Lawsuit
Uh oh. Hope you didn’t think the economy’s death grip on the hotel industry had loosened. Seems the bottom has dropped out from under the highly anticipated Waldorf-Astoria Sarasota.
The developers funding the massive project are in an ugly feud, with Gary Moyer suing his former business partner, the “much younger and wealthier” Zeb Portonova, reports the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
Back in early 2008, we reported the announcement for the coming hotel project, which was set to be a 225-room hotel featuring 38,000 square feet of meeting space, signature restaurants, a roof-top pool, and a swank spa. Delivery was expected in late 2010, so the project had sort of fallen off our radar. The Herald Tribune fills us in on the ugliness that has transpired since then:

Some people go for Civil War re-enactments, some people prefer Jane Austen movies, but when it comes to historical fixes, we prefer the vintage booze that are making a comeback at hipster-frequented speakeasies across the country. That’s why we want to tell you about the upcoming “Stormin’ the Sazerac” event at the landmark Roosevelt New Orleans on Friday, September 25.
Back in the day, women were only admitted to the Sazerac Bar at the Roosevelt on one day of the year: Mardi Gras (remember, this is New Orleans). Well, 60 years ago, a group of well-to-do New Orleans ladies decided they wanted a drink, and on September 25, 1949, they stormed the bar and demanded to drink. Their gambit paid off, and ever since, women have been admitted on the same basis as men.
