It's cold, snowy and miserable, and Cinco de Mayo is just too far away. So what are NYC hotels to do to cheer us all up? Why, celebrate National Margarita Day, of course. (Yes, that really is a thing). It's officially tomorrow, but, we say, why not get started tonight?
Here's where and what to drink (and how to make your own):
Classic Margarita ($19, in above photo) from the Vintage Specialty Cocktails menu at Trouble’s Trust in The New York Palace 1.5 oz Patron Silver 1 oz Cointreau 1.5 Fresh Lime Juice 0.5 oz Simple Syrup Serve on the rocks or in a Martini glass. Garnish with salt.
The W Chicago City Center hosted an early Valentine's Day bash on Tuesday night in their new Extreme Wow (or "EWow") Suite, which is different from any other suite in a few ways.
First: it has Space Invaders. That's right— just off the entrance, a small arcade area houses throwback games. As for the rest?
The 22nd-floor suite, which opened quietly in August, spans 1,500 square feet. In a made-for-entertaining living room area, a serpentine couch is topped with fuzzy throws and jewel-hued pillows; there's also a 55-inch TV and a high-top bar with seating for four. On the night we stopped by, the hotel's in-house mixologist Lauren Parton was whipping up personalized "love potion" sips behind the bar; we hear she works her magic, and can even lead demos, at all types of private W functions.
In the bedroom, a king-size bed is topped with 350-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets. A corner dressing salon—kind of perfect for bridal parties— has two, floor-to-ceiling mirrored wardrobes, a vanity desk with an illuminated oval mirror, and a three-way dressing mirror.
The first rendering (we have a picture from almost exactly the same angle just below) also clearly shows the all-glass top floor that will be added to create an ‘upside down’ hotel with Living Room lobby, restaurant, and bar all on the hotel’s rooftop.
Billed as the only downtown Chicago hotel that overlooks Lake Michigan, W Chicago Lakeshore boasts views of the "sparkling lakefront and Chicago's glittering skyline" on its website. True, but the interior view may be a little less, shall we say, shiny. Don't fret, W diehards: That's all about to change.
On TripAdvisor, a user called Seattle97010 titled his June 2013 review of the property "Renovation Ready," and noted the "shabby condition" of its rooms. (Look, he did say the "restaurant was great, though.") In response, a W rep apologized and promised: "we will be going through a complete renovation and redesign soon." When will it be finished? The jury's still out. Drive-bys confirm that there is in fact some scaffolding and construction equipment outside the hotel—always a good sign—and another W spokesperson told us that renovations should be done by the end of the year.

In case you've already forgotten, our #6 resolution for hotels to adopt was more mobile check-ins with "bonus points if they offer keyless entry too." Well, it looks like Starwood Hotels will be getting an envelope of bonus points from us.
The hotel brand announced yesterday that members of its Starwood Preferred Guest program will be able to test a Keyless Mobile Check-In via the SPG smartphone app. Take a look at how it will work:
It's not that much different from the Smart Check-In that Starwood first started doing with its Aloft brand, except the app replaces the special SPG member keycard.
Starwood will be testing this new keyless technology at Aloft hotels in early 2014 with plans to roll it out in Aloft and W Hotels after that. You can apply to be a tester here but you have to be an SPG member first.

Way back in 2012, we snapped a few pictures of another newcomer: the W Beijing Chang’An, hoping it would be ready for what then seemed an eternity away – the first day of 2014. That, unfortunately, did not quite work out as planned, with the hotel now pushed back until late June. New Year’s day of 2014 was going to be a double party, with the joint opening of sister property W Shanghai – The Bund, but there we’re looking at June next year before we get to go inside. At least we have some glimpse of what the hotels look like for you now.

Having received a first shot of the future W Amsterdam thanks to one of our tipsters, we decided to do a little further investigation and see what we could find out about the hotel located just off of Dam Square, less than ten minutes’ walk from the city’s central railway station.
We’d agree with our tipster’s assessment that the building, in its current state at least, lacks in the aesthetics department, but, with the right bit of love and W imagination, we do see a lot of potential. The address is not Raadhuisstraat 2, but rather Spuistraat 175, the street that runs along the back of the building. The Albert Heijn (a grocery store) and Gall & Gall (a wine & spirits shop) you see on the ground floor in the above shot will remain. Based on the description on the architect’s website, this will mean that all public spaces of the hotel, including reception, restaurant, and bar, will be on the top floor of the hotel. Read on for more about the building’s history and future as a W.
So we were all sorts of excited when W Hotels announced it would be opening its first Italian hotel in Milano, but had not even a hint of an image to go with it. Now we do, if only of the exterior of the five-story structure on Via Brera, in the middle of the city’s artsy and nightlife quarter.
To get the worst news out of the way: that 2013 opening that floated around at the time did not quite work out – obviously – and if you’re eager to check in, pace yourself. It’ll be another two and a half years until April 1, 2016 (no April Fool’s joke, we hope) before that will be possible.

Iceland is home to some seriously cool hotels. There's Design Hotel's 101 Hotel Reykjavik, the Art Deco Hotel Borg, Klaus Ortlieb's Hlemmur Square Hotel, the luxury resort Hotel Ranga and the eco-design (and new member of the Design Hotels collection) ION. The only thing Iceland doesn't have, surprisingly, is a five-star property, but that's soon (hopefully) to change with the construction of a brand new 250-room luxury hotel next to Harpa, the Olafur Eliasson co-designed concert hall and conference center in Reykjavik.
We already knew Chris Brown was bad news but his nasty antics have gotten him in serious trouble again, this time outside W Hotel in Washington D.C. where his tour bus was parked outside.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... at around 4:30 AM Brown got into an argument with a man outside the W Hotel on K Street and allegedly punched him once in the face. We're told the alleged victim never threw a punch.
Chris also allegedly tossed out a gay slur, saying, "I'm not into this gay s**t, I'm into boxing" before punching the man. Of course, Chris Brown's camp is saying that the man tried to board Chris's tour bus and Chris was merely prevention. Suuure. The victim's nose was broken and he may need surgery.
The good news in all of this is that Brown and a bodyguard are expected back in court today to answer to felony assault charges. Since Brown is still on probation for the heinous thing he did to Rihanna in 2009, he could be sent back to jail for violating his probation.
Meanwhile, we don't think the W Hotel has been sullied by Brown's presence, but we do hope they consider putting him, and his tour bus, on a blacklist in the future.

We like to keep it fun but informative here at HotelChatter so our series, What is This?, is devoted to odd-looking items in hotels that upon first glance look as if they serve only a decorative purpose. But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.
We saw a friend Facebook a picture of her bathroom at the trendy W Mexico City and we were all like, WHAT. IS. THIS. So we went over to the W's website and found out that yes, there is a hammock suspended over the bathtub. Here's how the folks at the Doble Ve describe it:
Zone, suspended over the bath area in the silken hammockover the warm (or cooling) bathtub in the silken hammock.
Did you get that it's a silken hammock? Anyways, we're all for adventurous design but we are just imagining all sorts of difficulties climbing into this hammock. And we'd be naked, yes? That wouldn't be pretty. That said, we'd be willing to give it a try--before we had any tequila. Alcohol and hammocks over bathtubs do not mix. At all.
Wanna give it a go? Rates at the W Mexico City start at just $189USD for a Spectacular room.
