W Hotels to Return to Australia with the W Brisbane

Site Where: 300 George Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, 4000

Last time we checked in with W Hotels' plans to relaunch the brand down under, Melbourne was the city to be rumored in the running for W's return to Australia (W once had a property in Sydney for a few years in the early aughts.) That fell through, so the folks over at W decided that Oz'z third largest city, Brisbane, would be the perfect place. Hence W Brisbane, opening in 2018.

In an announcement last week, W said the hotel would be a par of a brand spanking new building complex on the western side of the central business district, just steps from the city's namesake river. The entire development will result in three tower rising from the ground, with W Brisbane staking claim to one of them; the other two will be office spaces and luxury high-rise living.

Starwood Hotels to Open 3 Very Important Hotels in China Next Month

Where: China
August 22, 2014 at 11:16 AM | by | Comments (0)

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has done exactly what they said they would do in their expansion into China and the Asia Pacific. There are, and have been for quite some time, more hotels in the works than we can keep up with. Almost all Starwood brands have or will soon have an address in China, including Element Hotels, which is opening next year.

We've tried to list all that we know of that's happening with Starwood in China on our Master Openings List, but as seasoned readers of the list know, things change quite a bit and most hotels, get pushed onto the next year.

However, Starwood has three important openings in China in September, with properties that are very big on design and luxury. Here they are:

Keep Up With the Joneses With These Cocktail Trends 2014: Part 1

August 15, 2014 at 4:34 PM | by | Comments (0)

As Week 1 of HotelChatter Cocktail Week(s) wraps up, here's a run-down of some of the nifty things we see going on in the world of hotel bars and bevvies. What do you see goin’ on out there? Let us know in the comments below!

There’s so Much More to Syrup Than Maple –
If you’re into cocktails there’s a pretty good chance you’ve made your own simple syrup but these hotels are going beyond the norm and creating some pretty exotic specialty syrups.

At Fifteen Beacon’s Mooo (a Preferred Hotel) they make all of their syrup’s in-house, but we particularly liked the sound of the House made Celery Lemongrass Syrup that they use in their Celery 75 cocktail, made with Berkshire Greylock gin, Prosecco, strawberry, and the syrup, of course.

Cost to imbibe: $14
Cost to stay at the hotel 'cause you've imbibed: Starts at $479

And here’s an exotic beauty from the W Bangkok: the Chor Muang cocktail. You have absolutely no hope of making this drink at home since it’s made with Butterfly Pea Flower House Made Syrup – a flower that has become so rare that it’s difficult to find it in Thai markets. This elusive ingredient, however, makes it popular with guests who want something authentically Thai, and with locals who want the same. Other ingredients in this cocktail include Butterfly Flower-infused raspberry vodka, lime juice, and it’s garnished with – here we go – a 24-carat gold dust-dipped Butterfly Flower.

Cost to imbibe: THB $275 ($9)
Cost to stay at the hotel 'cause you've imbibed: Starts at THB 4,788 ($150)

There Will Be Plenty Of Golden Slumbers At W Bogota, Opening This Fall

Go To The Hotel's Web
  Site Where: Bogota, Colombia
August 13, 2014 at 1:10 PM | by | Comments (0)

W Bogota is a bold and brilliant manifestation of the city’s diverse interplay of history and tradition, arts and culture, and the people and what they give to the local contextual landscape.

We recently shared the news of the upcoming W Bogota, due to open this fall (currently on the books for December 12). Yesterday, we were treated to a special (virtual) sneak peak of the hotel's standout design and quite frankly, we were blown away by what we saw. We'd like to say that they may have outdone themselves with this one, but then again this is what W Hotels is about – pushing the limits in contemporary hotel design but always with insight and purpose. In the case of W Bogota, add a fair amount of bling. But wait, we can explain.

HotelChatter's Hotel Cocktail Week(s) Begins with These Lazy-Hazy End Of Summer Cocktails

August 11, 2014 at 5:09 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's no secret that we love drinking in hotels here at HotelChatter. In fact, hotels might be our favorite "local." So all this week and next, we'll be pouring out some drinks for you during our second Hotel Cocktail Week(s) -- newly-expanded because there’s just so many drinks to share. We'll be posting quirky cocktails, boozy trends, unique menus and even recipes so you can recreate your favorite hotel drink at home. We expect everyone will be getting a bit tipsy over the next couple of weeks! But don't forget to tip your bartenders, in this case, us.

Although this may depress a few of you, it’s time to face reality: there are only a few short weeks remaining of good ‘ol summertime. But carpe diem everyone! It’s not too late to get these hotel cocktails and maybe grab some rays at a rooftop bar at the same time.

Sugar Snap Pea and Mint Cocktail at W New York–-Downtown’s Living Room Bar & Terrace

Created by mixologist Eben Klemm, the Sugar Snap Pea and Mint cocktail at W Downtown combines aquavit, simple syrup and muddled mint, lemon and sugar snap peas. Topped with ginger beer and garnished with a snap pea and mint sprigs, it’s one last fleeting summery sight for guests to behold. Plus the vegie makes it good for you. No need to explore that further.

The Farmers Tan Martini at Hotel Vermont’s Juniper

This drink is a twist on the classic dirty martini and combines the pickled vegetable of the day (most recently it was pickled fiddleheads), Vermont Barr Hill vodka or gin, pickling juice and a vegetable salt rim. Since it sounds like a pickle in a glass, we recommend a hearty beef burger to complement this bevvie.

If you want to give it a go at home, here’s what you do:

Combine 2.5 oz Green Mountain Vodka or Gin and .5 oz pickling brine
Shake ‘er up and put in a Martini glass with a Vegetable Salt Rim
Garnish with seasonal pickled vegetable

Sleeker. Sexier. Sassier.

Those are the three words used to describe the freshly revealed design of W Chicago Lakeshore after a massive renovation that made this beach-side stunner even more stunning.

Forking over about $38 million dollars for a much-needed refresh of the 520 guest rooms and suites, corridors, and even building exterior, the only hotel that overlooks Lake Michigan is once again the hotspot for visitors. And for locals too thanks to a few new restaurant and lounge offerings.

Funky Friday: W Mexico City Takes Us on a Magical Mystery Tour

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Campos Elíseos 252, Miguel Hidalgo,Polanco, 11560 Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal, Mexico
June 20, 2014 at 4:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

Welcome to Funky Friday, where we feature one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.

We admit it was a tough decision, whether to cover the illusionary new public spaces at W Mexico City as a separate story—which we may still do—or feature them on Funky Friday. You can decide for yourself, but it's got all the parts we look for on Funky Friday and we simply could not resist.

True Colors: How Hotels Are Celebrating Pride Month

June 12, 2014 at 9:02 AM | by | Comments (0)

Tosh & Carmine at the Carlton Hotel New York, for Marriott's #LoveTravels campaign

June is Pride month, and plenty of hotels are getting into the spirit by saluting the LGBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) community in different ways. Here are a few that caught our eye, for every guest in the rainbow.

For the Party Animal: Dream Downtown in NYC. Party lovers heading to NYC for Pride (June 24-29) will want to check out the Dream Downtown, offering a Pride package which includes drinks at check-in (might as well get started) and an all-access pass to “Hot & Wet,” a DJ-hosted Pride kick-off pool party on Tuesday, June 24. Also provided is a hangover kit that includes Emergen-C and, most importantly, a 3pm checkout. Rates start at $350 per night with a two-night minimum; valid for stays through June 30, 2014.

The W Hotels Yoga Truck to Hit the Streets of NYC Next week

May 22, 2014 at 1:33 PM | by | Comments (0)

You know “downward dog.” You know “warrior,” “tree,” and “lotus.” Now here’s a new yoga position for you: “Mime stuck in traffic.”

On Wednesday, May 28, W Hotels will host a roving promotion for its “FIT with Tara Stiles” program. Stiles, a yoga guru with her own burgeoning mini-empire, will truck around town inside a glass box, demonstrating for passerby and easily distracted Manhattan cabbies the in-room poses and workouts she designed for W travelers. (Think: twists for hangover detox, and the hip-opening pigeon pose to put a jetlag-defeating sashay in your step.)

Departing from the W New York at 11 AM, Stiles' glass-encased effort is described by the W as “one part performance art and one part yoga instruction,” and thus finally sheds some light on the meaning of Tilda Swinton’s MoMA show: She was just in shavasana, guys.

Obviously this is a sight you’d want to snap and upload to your social media (caption: WTF?) anyway. But W is also rewarding amateur shutterbugs like so: snap a photo of Stiles or yourself doing a yoga pose in a unique location, then upload it to Instagram (@WHotels) with the hashtag #POSEWHENEVER. You’ll get a chance to win a spot at the “FIT with Tara Stiles” retreat at the W Bali, which includes — who cares, it’s Bali, baby.

To help you cheat, they’ve shared with us the truck’s schedule, below. Even if we don’t make it to Bali, we always appreciate a head-turning promotional idea. If nothing else, it makes for a good neck stretch.

W Hotels of New York to Have D'usse del Leche On Offer This Summer

May 13, 2014 at 9:19 AM | by | Comments (0)

D'USSEis the cognac that makes Beyonce and Jay-Z all drunk in love (and Solange possibly all violent) but you don't need to be a rap superstar to enjoy it. Instead, just pop into a W Hotel in New York.

The hotel collection is now offering a D’USSE de Leche, a cognac-flavored ice cream. It will be available through the W Hotel's room service as well as the hotels' Living Rooms (lobbies, in W-speak.)

“W is all about bringing its guests insider access to exclusive offerings they can’t experience anywhere else,” said Patrick Horstmann, General Manager of W New York - Downtown. “We’re honored to offer D’USSE de Leche, combining our passion for cocktails and the finest luxury products into one delicious indulgence.”
