We know, we’ve kind of been obsessed with HotelTonight lately, but we promise it’s for the greater good of all! Call us the Rebels of Hotel Rates, but there’s just something about getting kick-ass deals on normally outside-your-budget hotels.
Case in point: Last Thursday we needed to stay in New York City for a night but weren’t sure what hotel rates would be. Rock bottom because of the impending Labor Day weekend, or sky high because of just that? That morning we checked the usual suspects, Quikbook, SniqueAway, and Jetsetter and everything seemed to be around $250 a night and more. ‘Not bad, for NYC!’ you might think. Well, we just didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t PAY those rates. Something in our gut told us things would get better if we just waited until noon.
When the clock struck 12, we opened our Hotel Tonight app and the gold was there. Dream New York for $155 a night! . With a rate that's been more than $269, we knew we had a winner.

A sneaky snapshot of Tudor House, still in the works in May
But, this being Hotel Land, the dream is not yet fully realized. The rooftop pool won't be open until July, according to the hotel's Facebook page. And Geoffrey Zakarian's restaurant Tudor House is so far just serving breakfast—with lunch and dinner apparently on the way in another week or two.

Fake guests but there will be real ones here soon.
You guys. It's for real--The Dream Downtown is actually accepting guests. Like right now.
The online reservation system is not working as promised (nor does the website have room photos) but you can call the reservations line and book a room. Tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday night are sold out but rooms are open again on Thursday night for $295 a night. Everything at the property is open with the exception of the business center, gift shop, the Romera New York restaurant and the meeting space.
But that means that room service, the bar and lounge and the rooftop pool are open. Pack your swim trunks! Even better, the rate includes free WiFi.
As for when the hotel officially opens that is still TBD, according to the hotel, but it won't be too far behind. In fact, the hotel will soft open around June 15 with the official open status coming after July 5. That's also when all of the hotel services, like 24-hour room service should also be in place.

It's official! The still-not-open-but-almost-there Dream Downtown hotel on the edge of Manhattan's Chelsea and Meatpacking Districts has a sense of humor. And truly, if there's something we've learned while observing the lives of the hotels around this area, a sense of humor is a serious key for survival.
The Dream Downtownor "The Cheesegrater" as we've preferred to call it since last yearowned up to their extreme similarity to the culinary tool by actually sending us a cheesegrater, complete with their logo attached. The Dream Downtown may have been delayed for ever and ever and their website might look like Karim Rashid did it for homework (and he might have; his studio is on the block), but the Dream Downtown knows it looks just like a kitchen utensil and it's okay with that. So rock on, Cheesegrater. We can't wait to see what you've been hiding under the slick, silver exterior of yours this summer.
A pic of the hotel itself, behind the cheesegrater:
We've been waiting a seriously long time for the Dream Downtown to open and last month, we got word that we would now have to wait until Summer 2011. While the construction job looks about done, there's some drama going on behind the scenes. Yes, another hip new NYC hotel is having drama behind the scenes just before opening. Yawn.
This drama apparently deals with the nightclub aspect of the Dream flagship hotel, which is now in partnership with Wyndham Hotels.
According to its website, the hotel has plans for a restaurant, MSR, from neurologist-chef, Dr. Miguel Sánchez Romera (hmmm...interesting, we'll have to explore that in detail later) as well as a rooftop lounge and beach club. Yes, beach club in lower Manhattan! But who is running the sandy enclave is now in dispute.
The NY Post reports:

Checking in on The Cheesegrateraka the Dream Downtown hotel in New York Citywe discover that the opening date has again been pushed back. Last we heard, Vikram Chatwal's newest hotel would be opening it's shiny silver doors in March 2011, but a recent press release firmly changes that to "Summer 2011." Okay, so we've got to wait a few more months before checking out its 316 "loft-inspired guestrooms," but it's not like the hotel is filling a need in the neighborhood; its Swiss cheese facade cuddles right up against the rear of the similarly holey Maritime Hotel.

Some rather surprising news came across the wire yesterday afternoon---Wyndham Hotels announced that they would now be managing and franchising the Dream Hotels and the Night Hotels brands from Chatwal Hotels and Resorts.
That's right, Vikram Chatwal's boutique hotel brands now belong to Wyndham. Vik is nowhere to be found but his dad is still in the picture. From the press release:
Sant Singh Chatwal, chairman and chief executive officer of Chatwal Hotels & Resorts and its management arm, Hampshire Hotels & Resorts, said Wyndham Hotel Group will “take the development of the Dream and Night brands to the next level" by leveraging Wyndham’s global distribution system, Wyndham Rewards loyalty program and extended reach of development professionals. Chatwal Hotels & Resorts will continue to own the Dream and Night brand trademarks and intellectual property.
The Dream Hotel is suddenly experiencing a bit of pop culture popularity. First, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills had their insufferable showdown at the hotel and now the hotel has received a visit from Madonna who brought her latest toy with her. And it dances!
Page Six reports:
Her Madgesty, 52, and dancer Brahim Zaibat, 24, were spotted at the Ava Penthouse Lounge at the Dream Hotel on Thursday night.
A source told us, "Madonna showed up to help celebrate her kabbalah teacher, Eithan Yardeni. But she brought some of her dancers, including Brahim. They hung out drinking Veuve Clicquot Rose until 1 a.m."

It's Monday morning--what better time to try and translate your Dreams into real-life hotel bookability? That's what we're doing today, as we check in on Vikram Chatwal's upcoming hotels, Dream South Beach and Dream Downtown in New York.
We've been tracking both properties for awhile now, and were hoping that both would become a reality in 2010. Alas, both are now on the 2011 list, with Dream South Beach scheduled for the first quarter of the year, and Dream Downtown penciled in for a Memorial Day weekend opening.

Please, let us introduce you to "The Cheesegrater!" Or, that's what we're calling it, anyway. The odd-looking building you see down the street there, just behind the white cube that is the Maritime Hotel, is hotelier Vikram Chatwal's long-delayed, long-constructioned Dream Downtown Hotel. As the name suggests, it is to be a downtown version of midtown's Dream Hotel, whose website makes it look more like a cheesy Eurotrash club.
Anyways...the Dream Downtown will join Chatwal's other hotels eventually, and it recently got a new skin of shiny metal panels. You can seem them reflecting the beautiful late summer blue sky above, but trust usthat hotel is as metallic silver as a 1950s toaster.
Last we heard, scheduled opening date for the
Dream Downtown Cheesegrater was March 2011, but then we can't forget that this is New York, and although the city never sleeps the construction takes twice as long (at least).
We don't mean to get greedy, but when we get some news about one hotel from a brand or collection, we start to wonder about the others in the family. And so it was when we finally got a sneak peek at what Dream South Beach will look like when it opens this fall. We oohed and ahhed over the renderings and then immediately started to wonder: So, what about Dream Downtown?
Since we weren't the only ones—a HotelChatter reader also emailed us to ask what was up with Dream Downtown—we posed the question to the folks at Dream H.Q.
