Vail's Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch Will Close for Spring
Wow. This is not a good sign: for the first time ever, the slow season in Vail is so slow that the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Vail Valley (closer to Beaver Creek) will close entirely for a month. Though there are other upscale hotels in ski areas that traditionally close for a few weeks during the off-season The Little Nell in Aspen and the Four Seasons Jackson Hole, for instance this is the first time the Ritz has shut its doors during the spring since it opened years ago.
According to the Denver Post, the luxe resort won't be taking reservations from April 14 through May 20. This means that around 350 of the hotel's employees (the "ladies and gentlemen") won't have a job during that period, but they'll get their jobs back when the hotel opens up again.
From the article:
"We're using the softer demand period to temporarily cease hotel operations," said [PR Director Parool] Shah. "These are considered job-attached layoffs; our intent is to welcome back every lady and gentlemen."
John Garth, the hotel's general manager, said the spring is often the slowest time of the year, and closing for a month after the ski season has been discussed before. But this year was a little different, he said.
Uh, yeah. Times, they are a-tough. And when a PR person says to a newspaper that the reason for the shut-down is "this year we have softer demand and it helps ensure our success for 2009," it means "OMG nobody came during ski season and they're really not coming in the off-season." Yikes.

The Inn at Beaver Creek Reopens as The Osprey on December 20th
The Inn at Beaver Creek (Beaver Creek, CO just next to Vail) has been closed for renovations and will reopen on December 20th as The Osprey at Beaver Creek, a chic 45-room boutique property whose claim to fame is (still) its location: it's the closest ski-in/ski-out hotel to any chairlift in North America.
While most hotels in the area have the whole ski lodge vibe goin' on (chandeliers made of antlers and whatnot), the Osprey is on the trendier side with an "urban/mountain design that encompasses edgy glamour" and, to be edgy, they're offering some kickass tech amenities:
Providing a see-and-be-seen setting, an atmosphere of "play" and excitement will be noticeable throughout The Osprey where guests can cozy up in front of a fireplace in the giant social room and watch a James Dean classic on a flat-screen TV, drum up a board game challenge with new friends or face off in a Wii system competition while enjoying a fine wine. Guests can also plug in and share the day's adventure on the slopes as filmed from their personal helmet cams, a rental amenity provided by the hotel's personal concierges.
Rooms at the Osprey start at $245 per night this ski season (reservations can be made here). And, um, let's all agree to check those helmet cams in the lobby and not wear 'em up to our rooms, shall we? We don't need to see any of that footage rolling on those public flat screens, thanks.

Vail Gets More Luxury Hotels, We Get No Closer to Affording Them
The ritzy ski town of Vail, Colorado is in the middle of a "renaissance" which, we assure you, is exactly what you may suspect: a lovely and fancy way of saying there is a lot of construction going on to build a few luxury hotels and to turn Vail Village into a cute little European-looking scene (it might look kinda like Disney world, but with more fur coats).
According to the Vail Daily News, the new Four Seasons on the way is slated for completion in late 2009 (hopefully in time for next year's ski season) and a new Ritz-Carlton will be ready in November 2010.

Reader Review :: First Look Inside the Westin Riverfront Resort in Vail Valley
Every so often, we feature a hotel review from one of our readers that we feel should be shared with the rest of you dear hotel guests. These reviews are highlighted because they are timely, about cool hotels in cool places and are relatively level-headed. Think you can submit one just like this? Send it in. Now, we present you with reader (and part-time Vail Valley local) Mark's review of the brand new Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain in the Vail Valley, which just opened up last week. Enjoy.
We had lunch and went on a tour of the newly-opened Westin Riverfront. Apparently, there was a big opening party on Friday, Oct 26 that almost everyone in the area was invited to, but I guess our invitations got lost in the mail.
The hotel is beautiful. Very zen-like, not what you would expect in the mountains, but still very, very nice without the pretentiousness of the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch.

The Arrabelle in Vail :: Ski Nannies Might Be Buried Beneath Construction
We visited the brand new Arrabelle at Vail Square resort and retail plaza yesterday for the first time since its January 5th completion, expecting to be blown away. Instead, dust was blown in our faces from all the construction.
We had our eyes peeled for the fabled Ski Nannies (we assumed they would morph into like, hiking nannies or rafting nannies or something since it's summertime), but they were nowhere to be found.
But that was the least of our problems: we couldn't find the front door, either.

Vail Hotel Scene :: The Westin Riverfront Is Coming Along Slowly
Last summer, we checked up on the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa, a massive 19-acre condo-hotel development at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain (near Vail) slated to be completed "Summer 2008."
Well, we swung by the site to check on progress and, um, yeah. About that whole opening-this-summer thing? It's gonna be a stretch.

Ski Nannies on Hand at the Arrabelle Resort in Vail

Vail is getting a little bit of Aspen-esque luxury digs for its snow bunnies with money.
The Arrabelle at the Vail Resort will open on January 5, 2008. A RockResort, The Arrabelle is the first new ultra-luxe resort to open in Vail in 25 years.
Anchoring a new destination called Vail Square, a European-inspired village that will fuse new energy into the region, The Arrabelle will offer guests an exceptional vacation experience with 36 luxury rooms and 50 condominiums, fine dining at Centre V, a RockResorts spa, personalized services such as the Ski Nanny, and a true ski-in/ski-out experience with a location just steps away from Vail Mountain.
Ski Nanny? Apparently the nanny will watch kids while they are on the slopes and take them to and from ski school, allowing parents to ski the more difficult slopes. We love it.

Vail Hotel Scene :: Sonnenalp Resort of Vail

We're checking in on the hotel happenings in Vail, Colorado this week and since the area has some serious construction to make the village feel a bit more "European", we checked out a hotel that was legitimately already European: The Sonnenalp Resort of Vail.
A member of Leading Small Hotels of the World, the Sonnenalp is owned by the same family that own the famous Sonnenalp Resort of Bavaria, which (according to the Sonnenalp website) was rated the number one vacation resort in Germany.
With its stellar reviews on Tripadvisor, we know the Sonnenalp has a fab reputation, but last time we checked in with them the property was in the middle of a bigtime renovation project that left some guests a little annoyed.
We went back to check out the changes and took a little tour of the property. What we found after the jump.

Vail Hotel Scene :: Coming Soon, The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa

We're checking in on the hotel happenings in Vail, Colorado this week and while Vail Village is mostly under construction, Beaver Creek Resort a couple miles away is as gorgeous as ever.
Beaver Creek sees ski seasons that are just as busy as Vail's and the town of Avon, located at the bottom of Beaver Creek Mountain, has several hotels and condo complexes that host a pretty serious number of those winter guests. A big problem here: skiers staying in Avon that wish to ski Beaver Creek mountain have always had to take a shuttlebus up to the slopes. Not so fun.
Here comes Starwood to save the day. Today we take a look at the development of the new Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa.

Vail Hotel Scene :: Vail Mountain Marriott Resort and Spa

Vail, Colorado is one year away from completion of its billion-dollar renovation project and construction is in full swing this summer all around the resort town.
Luckily, all the businesses in Vail and LionsHead remain open, the construction doesn't obstruct many views and all the commotion certainly won't disrupt most of the summer recreational activities on the mountain.
We're on the scene this week to see what's going on at a few of the local hotels and to see if the construction will help us score any rate kickbacks.
First up: The Vail Mountain Marriott Resort and Spa.
