Tune Hotels Will Honor The Beatles With Liverpool Hotel, Edinburgh On The Way

January 3, 2012 at 12:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

Despite just having opened a new branch on Liverpool Street last week, Tune Hotels is now aiming for yet another two new hotels in London between now and the start of the Olympics. And don't think they'll be taking a break after that, either. Oh no. CEO Mark Lankester told The Star that though the Olympics is good for business, "we are in [it] for the long term."

What this means is rapid expansion throughout the rest of the UK. And now we've gotten a few more details on the upcoming hotels, the first of which Lankester confirmed would pop up in Edinburgh and Liverpool (the city, not the London street) by 2013. And just to throw in a little extra excitement, he added: "With a name like Tune Hotels, we have to have one in the birthplace of the Beatles."

LEGOLAND UK's New LEGO-Themed Hotel Will Open on March 16th

November 30, 2011 at 1:55 PM | by | Comments (0)

Great news for parents of LEGO lovers--When the The LEGOLAND UK Theme Park opens again for the season on March 16, there will be a brand-new 150-room LEGO-themed hotel opening along side it called The LEGOLAND Windsor Resort Hotel. Even though a new Legoland recently opened in Orlando, this is actually the first official LEGOLAND hotel to open outside of Denmark (where the original LEGOLAND is.)

The UK LEGOLAND hotel will be very similar to the Denmark hotel in that the place will be wall-to-wall LEGOS from the entrance which will feature a fire-breathing dragon perched in a tower, to the restaurant, LEGO Skyline bar, and a LEGO pirates-themed pool. And of course, there will be LEGO-themed hotel rooms.

The Only Way Is Essex For England's Latest Hotel Venture

Mick looking Grand

Ladies and gentlemen, forget Ian Schrager and Andre Balazs and even the Donald: there’s a new hotel baron in town. He’s a silver fox, he has a charming twinkle of the eye, and he definitely has a way with the ladies, by the looks of the people he’s pulled. His name? Mick Norcross.

Now, you may not have heard of him if you’re in the States. You may even not know the name if you’re in the UK; but you’ll definitely be au fait with what’s made him famous: The Only Way Is Essex.

For those who need to come up to speed: TOWIE is kind of like the UK equivalent of Jersey Shore (only way, way better), set in Essex, which is kind of a cross between New Jersey and Vegas, with a little bit of Reno thrown in. Kirk Norcross is one of the main characters, kind of a hybrid of Pauly D (though he owns a club, rather than DJs) and the Situation (pulls lots of ladies but appears to despise womankind). His dad, who’s the money behind the scenes, is Mick. Mick likes hanging out with Kirk’s friends and coming onto ladies a couple of decades younger than himself.

Caught up? Anyways, according to the fount of all knowledge, the Daily Mail, Mick has bought the dilapidated (or, as the FailMail writes, “debilitated”) Grand Hotel in Leigh-On-Sea (a former grand dame, built 1896, that’s since fallen into gross disrepair), and plans to magic it into a boutique hotel, complete with restaurant and spa.

In The UK, Hotel Showers Come With Their Own Instructions

November 1, 2011 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

In the ever-expanding universe of Twitter, there is one particular trend @HotelChatter happens to quite enjoy: candid hotel room photos. These Twitpics range from stunning views to anti-views to celebrity tomfoolery and everything in between. And we can't get enough of 'em! Every week, we will feature one "Twitpic of the Week" to commemorate our favorite hotel-themed snapshot. Got a favorite of your own? Want to show off your sweet suite? Send it in!

We pulled this hotel bathroom snapshot from @helenzaltzman, who was staying in one of the UK Principal Hayley hotels. Whether all 24 European properties contain bath mat instructions like these, we cannot be sure. For their sake (and yours), we certainly hope the answer is yes.

This week, we're getting squeaky clean in the bathtub with acclaimed British vlogger Charlie McDonnell. McDonnell, who goes by @coollike in the Twitter-sphere, posted this photo last week with the caption: "Staying in a hotel room with my brother. It seems as though his bubble bath has gone ever so slightly awry."

Even the Isle of Man Has a Grand Dame Hotel, The Sefton

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Harris Promenade, Douglas, Isle of Man, United Kingdom, IM1 2RW
August 3, 2011 at 3:40 PM | by | Comments (0)

Do you judge hotels by their cover—or rather, their facade? We kind of admit to it, thus our immediate infatuation with the the historical hotel The Sefton, a classy grand dame that holds court on the main promenade in the city of Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man.

Yes, that Isle of Man. The one that sits in the Irish Sea between Belfast and Blackpool, that prints its own stamps and pounds sterling notes (and coins!) and hosts a motorcycle race every year. That Isle of Man. Who would have guessed it also had hotel properties like this? The Sefton is a truly British place, with a winter garden, chintzy rooms and proper afternoon tea that even brings in the locals on special occasions.

Typically the hotel (and its rooms from 90 GBP per night) host English tourists out for a weekend break from the middle of Britain, but the Sefton was also the site for several of the island's meetings of its own Congress. You see, the Isle of Man is a "British Crown Dependency," meaning it can have its own government but it still defers to good ol' England for things like defense and international representation. You won't get a passport stamp upon arrival to the island, but you will be able to send a postcard with a totally different stamp and postmark from those you'd get back on mainland. And that, dear readers, is just one tiny great reason to visit. Trust us.

Inside Wales' Ye Olde Bull's Head Inn, Which Practically Has Will and Kate for Neighbors

Go To The Hotel's Web

Where can you go to find a hotel with gorgeous rooms from 95 GBP and the even more stunning and unique suites only at 150 GBP, breakfast and WiFi included? Ah—way out in Wales, more specifically the town of Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey, to Ye Olde Bull's Head Inn and The Townhouse. There's no train station in this town; Beaumaris, though well-castled—is a roadtrip-in village of Welsh beauty that fills with bustrip tourists during the day and empties into quiet at night. Which is why we highly recommend staying overnight.

Whether you realize it or not, you're already familiar with Anglesey. The newly married royal couple William and Kate live around here, and it's no more than 30 minutes to drive from one end of the island to the other (though it's closely connected to mainland Wales by a regular bridge). For our exploring North Wales, Ye Olde Bull's Head Inn's more moden annex The Townhouse was our base to the affordable tune of 100 GBP per night.

Is That a Castle Down the Street or What?

Where: Castle Street, Isle of Anglesey, Wales, United Kingdom
July 28, 2011 at 5:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

Why, yes! Yes indeed it is a castle down the street...as seen from a room window at Ye Olde Bull's Head Inn in the tiny Welsh town of Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey.

This is Beaumaris Castle, a serious hunk of stone (with a moat!) that was begun in 1295 and took another 35 years to finish. Ha—doesn't that remind us of some NYC hotels. Anyway, the castle sits at the end of Castle Street, where you'll find Ye Olde Bull's Head and its more modern annex, The Townhouse. Across the street is the Castle Bakery. Seeing a theme here?

Ye Olde Bull's Head Inn is one of those hotels you just hope to find when you're outside of a city. It's got modern tech, two stunning restaurants and traditional English pub, spacious rooms that don't smell like old English country house, and—gasp—free WiFi.

Don't worry, we'll prove it with a full photo gallery and more tomorrow! Until then, here's a more impressive view of Beaumaris Castle.

Come Together at the Closest Hotel to Liverpool's 'Beatles Story' Museum

Go To The Hotel's Web

July 25, 2011 at 5:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

If you're an American traveling up to Liverpool, there's a pretty healthy chance that at least a portion of the trip is going to be The Beatles-related. And you know what? That's perfectly okay. There's pop music history all over the place in that city and they embrace it quite well, partially evidenced in the existence of The Beatles Story museum at Albert Dock.

And, if you're really serious about hitting all The Beatles hot spots, you'll probably either be staying at the Beatles-themed Hard Day's Night Hotel or as close to The Beatles Story experience as possible. For the latter, that means the Premier Inn Albert Dock.

Four Reasons We Love British Hotels So, So Much

July 21, 2011 at 4:06 PM | by | Comment (1)

Try as you might, every traveler is going to suffer some culture shock at some point. It can also occur on a smaller scale when checking into a hotel and noting the amenities. One of our favorite countries for encountering pleasant surprises in the hotel extras is England, and here's four reasons why:

· Complimentary tea & biscuits: The nice spread in the photo above is what we found yesterday upon checking in at Ye Olde Bulls Head Inn in Beaumaris, Wales, but cute little cookies and a teatime setup are necessities for the British guest and thus you'll find them in-room everywhere from the 5-stars to the 2-stars. The typical offerings include two free bottles of water (one still, one sparkling), a carafe of chilled cream, a variety of tea bags, two packets of hot chocolate and four cookies biscuits total. This can vary, and if you're ever in a Brit hotel room without a tea tray, call down and ask if tea service is included.

Could Snoring Too Loudly Get You Kicked Out of the Crowne Plaza?

July 21, 2011 at 12:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

This hotel guest is thankfully muffling his own snoring.

Erm...file this under uncool hotel jobs?

A few Crowne Plaza Hotels in the UK made the news last week for their "Snore Absorption" rooms which are designed to help snorers snore less and help their companions sleep more. The rooms include a bunch of snore absorption amenities like sound-absorbing headboards to muffle the echo, anti-snoring wedge pillows and white noise machines.

But now it comes out that the hotels are also employing snore monitors whose job it is to patrol the designated quiet corridors of the hotel. Reuters reports:

"Snore monitors" patrol corridors in the designated quiet zones of Crowne Plaza hotels in the cities of London, Leeds and Manchester. Their job is to listen out for offensive noises and knock on the door of guests who snore too loudly.

"We have quiet zones on two floors of the hotel. As Snore Monitor, I conduct floor walks to check for noise disruptions, paying particular attention to the quiet zone rooms," said Laura Simpson, Snore Monitor at Leeds Crowne Plaza hotel in northern England.
