We know it doesn't look like much now, but this shrouded warehouse building has some big shoes to fill in the future. If all goes to plan, by the middle of next year, this vintage brick structure will get a new makeover and become Australia's first Tryp by Wyndham.

Tryp Brisbane will bring an edgy and locally-inspired design to Australia's third largest city. Situated in the city's Fortitude Valley area, guests will be within walking distance to the area's hottest nightclubs, boutique shops and trendy restaurants. But if you don't want to leave the hotel, the lobby will feature a ground-floor restaurant and hip bar, that's posh enough for Brisbane's elite scene as well as gives travelers a taste of the local nightlife.

Wyndham Trades In A Garden For A Tryp

The new lobby at DoubleTree Times Square South

We told you last month that DoubleTree was planning on taking over the Wyndham Garden Times Square South—which, we can safely report, officially transpired. However, the rooms remain intact, as well as the ground-floor cafe, Greenhouse 36, so not much has really changed except for the name. And the added bonus of a welcome cookie.

But this neighborhood hasn't seen the last of Wyndham! Oh, no. Just one block south, this month the brand is launching Tryp by Wyndham Times Square South. So we thought we'd do a little compare/contrast to see which of these two (verrry similar) hotels is worthy of your dollar.

For starters? The price. For a random date (we picked a one-night stay on Feb 22nd), Tryp's lowest starting rate is $179, which offers a queen bed, iPod dock, and free WiFi. Meanwhile, DoubleTree will do you one better with starting rates of $152, and pretty much all the same amenities.

What Will It Cost to Sleep in This Week's Newest Hotels?

February 1, 2012 at 12:47 PM | by | Comment (1)

The Belgraves as seen last week.

Today is a huge day today for several hotels as it's their first (or second) day in business. Here's a quick round-up of the hotels that have just opened and what their room rates are for tonight:

· Trump Toronto: Trump took Toronto yesterday when they opened their seventh eponymous hotel. Last we checked opening rates were nearly $600 but we were relieved to see that rates tonight are down to $474 a night and that includes a deluxe king room starting at a whopping 550-sq.ft., breakfast for two, internet, local calls and a suite upgrade for an extra $50. The offer is good through February 29.

· The Belgraves: The very first Thompson Hotel has opened in London today. Last we checked room rates were a $381 night but yesterday, Jetsetter.com began offering rooms for just $275 a night. If you're thinking of staying there, you better get on it before rooms go above the 400 pound mark. Or you could wait to see what we think of the place. Wink, wink.

Tryp By Wyndham Gets A Sign

It looks like things are coming along at the new Tryp By Wyndham near Times Square. Though the hotel has definitely breezed by its planned November opening, a near-finished lobby (see photos below) and newly-installed signage should mean we start to see some action here after the holidays.

This is of course just a fraction of the mega hotel explosion that New York City is about to endure over the next few years, as per Bloomberg's vision. But all 7,000 hotel rooms are not created equal—nor do they simply appear overnight. For instance, over the next few months, we should be looking at a new Conrad New York (fancy art), a Hyatt in Union Square (super awesome location), and the elusive NoMad (has a glass pyramid). Not to mention The Out NYC (NYC's first gay hotel).

Tryp by Wyndham's Website Looks Great, Now They Just Need To Finish The Hotel

One day after the launch of Tryp by Wyndham's new website, we found ourselves strolling down W 35th St, right past Tryp Times Square South, the brand's yet-to-open US debut.

We reported on this hotel back in October, noting the 173-room hotel's "Mediterranean design elements" and willingness to accept Wyndham loyalty program points. Back then, Tryp Times Square South (TTSS) had a projected opening date of "mid-2011." But judging from the look of things now, this place won't be up and running until at least October. If they're lucky.

Wyndham's New TRYP Hotel to Open in NYC Next Year

Where: 345 West 35th Street [map], New York, NY, United States

You may not have known this but Tryp, the mid-priced European brand from Sol Melia hotels was actually acquired by Wyndham Hotels back in June. And Wyndham has wasted no time in bringing the newly re-branded Tryp by Wyndham to Americans.

The first North America property will open in--where else?--Manhattan in mid-2011 at 345 West 35th Street between Eight and Ninth Avenues. That puts the hotel within spitting distance of Madison Square Garden and close to Times Square and the Empire State Building.

To be called TRYP New York City--Times Square South, the 173-room hotel will feature the same type of guestrooms that are seen in the European and South American TRYP hotels, which is a bit of a vague statement considering that some TRYP hotel rooms are rather old. But we're guessing they mean simple rooms with simple amenities and design. As for decor, TRYP NYC will be infused with Mediterranean elements and NYC style from designer Glen Coben.

The word is out: the hotel formerly known as the Renaissance Atlanta Downtown Hotel will officially become the Hotel Meliá Atlanta on October 15.

When we first heard the news that Sol Meliá was coming to America, we still weren't sure which of the company's brands would be taking over in Atlanta. But we were happy to hear it's a Meliá, since it has a good track record in Europe (especially in Spain) and in Mexico and South America.

We can't wait to see how the vacation-oriented experience of these hotels translates into a business hub like Atlanta.
