March 11, 2011 at 11:37 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you plan on hitting up Chicago's Saint Patrick's Day Parade tomorrow but didn't reserve your hotel yet, the luck of the Irish must be on your side. The Renaissance Blackstone Chicago Hotel, which is right off the parade route's end at South Columbus Drive and Balbo Drive, still has last-minute rooms available.

The Blackstone is a perfect location; you can watch the parade wrap up and then bring the party back to the hotel. Rooms are available starting at $179 for St. Paddy's Day.

Hotels are getting into the holiday spirit with sugar castles or Christmas trees with designer ornaments, but the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago is going all out with some special guests.

Two real reindeer will visit the hotel as part of its inaugural Trump Reindeer on the River shindig on November 20. This will mark the second time the hotel's hosted reindeer games; the animals made an appearance on the terrace Christmas Day so diners at Sixteen restaurant could check them out during their meal.

Travelers now have another way of avoiding traffic and hoofing it along the Chicago River. The Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago recently opened its outdoor river walk, the last phase of construction for the sixth-tallest building in the world.

The river walk is essentially a riverfront park area that totals 1.2 acres, and it's opening right in time for spring. It'll likely become a hangout, since the park-like atmosphere and views will encourage people to linger. Accessible from the Wrigley Building breezeway and Wabash Avenue, the river walk allows pedestrians to walk along the Chicago River and offers great views of the water, Michigan Avenue and the city skyline.

See the Chicago River Turn Green from the Trump's St. Pat's Skyboxes

Check out the killer view from the Skyboxes.

There's lots of reasons to avoid huddling outside on the sidewalks with your friends for Chicago's 2010 St. Patrick's Day Parade, namely the freezing wind, the cold temps, the claustrophobic crowds and lack of bathrooms. But this year, the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago offers an alternative that'll keep you warm and give you a killer view.

For the March 13 parade, the hotel has skyboxes on the 17th floor that will give you a good view of the action. You'll see the Chicago River turn green—an annual St. Patty's Day tradition, not because of toxic waste—and you'll see the drunken parade-goers make their way down Columbus Drive.

Wind Strikes The Donald Again But Don't Worry, His Hair Is Ok

More news on old guys today!

Donald Trump's worst enemy--the wind--has struck again, but this time it had nothing to do with his hair. A helicopter was supposed to install the spire (antenna) on the top of the 92-story Trump International Hotel and Tower over the weekend, but because of 50 miles per hour wind gusts on Saturday and 40 miles per hour gusts on Sunday, the topping off had to be called off.

For now, there's no definite reschedule date because the installation requires the coordination of the Coast Guard, FAA and also calls for all the streets around the building to be completely closed. In addition, the topping off requires a specialized helicopter and skilled pilot who is apparently in great demand. Trump may try it again this weekend, but otherwise it will have to wait until 2009.

Hotel News Briefs: Marriott Gets Greener, Trump Gets Delayed, Le Meridien Gets Facebooked and More

December 5, 2007 at 4:38 PM | by | Comments (0)

There's tons of hotel news flying around this week and we don't have time to give each and every story the love and attention it may deserve, so you will have to settle for some news briefs.

· Bravo to Marriott Hotels for going green at the company headquarters in Baltimore. Check-out this unintentionally hilarious video from Marriott Corporate about the green changes. We can't quite put our finger on it but there is something very high school about the headquarters. Is it the cafeteria? Is it the mocked-up green cubicle? Or is it the parking spaces for the cool people with hybrids?

· Chicago Tribune reports that the Trump Chicago still has not received a certificate of occupancy from the city. The hotel, which was to open on Dec. 3rd, will get a new batch of inspections this week.

· Rapper Pimp C who died at the Mondrian Hotel yesterday may have died from natural causes. TMZ says he was found fully clothed on top of his bed and there were no drug paraphernalia or other drugs found in the room. Sad. We'll still pour out some pimp juice for him.

·Le Meridien Hotels have launched a new website design today at LeMeridien.com. The creative concept behind it is called "Discovery Starts with You".

The aim of the website is to let its guests take an interactive journey into the world of Le Méridien by placing them in control of their own hotel guest experience.

But one-upping that, Le Meridien is now on Facebook. OMG, WTF, LOL and SuperPoking all apply.

· We mentioned that NYLO Hotels have finally gotten the promised Daniel Vosovic hotel uniforms but we forgot to mention that NYLO Warwick will open in June 2008. To be more specific, it's in the mixed-use development Pontiac Mills near Providence. But Warwick should suffice, right?

All Donald Trump Wants for Christmas is a Certificate of Occupancy

Donald Trump and his spawn are hoping to open the Trump Chicago by December 3rd but so far, the city has yet to issue a certificate of occupancy.

"We'd like to open on Dec. 3," Trump said Monday afternoon. "This is the date we're shooting at, but that's up to the city.

"They want to make sure everything is perfect, and it is," he said.

Talks are continuing and the developer said he hopes for further word later in the week. Because of the phased nature of the opening, Trump is seeking a "partial certificate of occupancy," and the city is still reviewing the request, said Bill McCaffrey, a spokesman for the Department of Buildings.

The "partial" COO would be good for three floors of the hotel as the rest are still under construction. We checked the Five-Star Alliance site which had reservations for the hotel starting at $355 for a Trump Experience room on Dec. 19th. The "experience" is a 600-sq.ft. room with a kitchen and a sofa bed.

Let's hope Santa Claus will bring Trump a real certificate of occupancy before the year is out. Wouldn't want people to miss out on this experience.
