Hotel Towel Art Still Exists (In Cuba)

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Finca Santa Ana, Trinidad, Cuba

Yes, hotel towel origami is still alive and well, at least at the Hotel Las Cuevas in Trinidad, Cuba.

Perhaps (we hope) because these guests were on their honeymoon, hotel staff went to all the trouble of twisting and contorting a bunch of towels into this love-heart flanked by two, well, towel-people. Strange-looking people, though, because their arms start at the top of their heads. But the idea is sweet.

However, not only is the towel art completely over-the-top, there's even a handwritten note in the middle of the artwork--we're just bummed it's too small for us to read. What a pity that some of the time and effort used to create this whole towel origami thing wasn't used in modernizing the bedspread instead.

Adventures in Overservice :: The Art of Toilet Paper Origami

October 9, 2008 at 4:30 PM | by ChristineM | 2 Comments

Origami is again assuming its rightful place in the world thanks to the hotel business. Housekeepers at luxe lairs around the world are neatly folding the loose end of a partially used roll of toilet paper into a neat little bow or fan--because toilet paper origami is an art form only enjoyed by the highest end travelers.

So when the room's temporary inhabitant next finds himself on the pot, he'll know that this hotel takes its commitment to creating an "experience" for him seriously, even while he's on the throne.

And if the hotel fancies themselves that much more deluxe, the tissues poking out of the tissue box will have been made to resemble the petals of a carnation (never again to be unbound, forcing anyone who needs to blow their nose to reach for the TP).

Heading to the Mayan Riviera? Check out the newly renovated La Zebra Cantina & Cabanas in Tulum (about two hours south of Cancun), a nine-cabana property that promises an authentic Mexican beachfront experience.

La Zebra boasts a "retro-jungle" vibe and they describe their own decor as "jungle chic." Hmmm... we have no idea how chic or retro jungles can be, but the pictures on the website look pretty neat.

A Zoo On Your Bed at Jumeirah Beach

Where: 6 Jumeirah Beach Road, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
June 5, 2007 at 9:14 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

While we were puzzling last week about Harry Potter deals at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai, we couldn't help but notice that their housekeeping staff obviously have a degree in magic too. Towel origami has gone mad at Jumeirah Beach.

While part of us thinks that the time spent twisting our towels into elephants, swans and dragons could be better used on vacuuming the dust under the bed that we always find when we check we didn't leave socks there, we do appreciate it as an art form. We also want to know what happens to the eyes. Do they recycle them?

Hotel Arranges Your Toilet Paper To Your Liking

We thought towel origami was crazy but now a new trend might be on the horizon--toilet paper origami.

A hotel in Winston Salem takes the time to put these finishing touches on your toilet paper rolls. So what swanky hotel is pioneering this  TP origami trend? Why it's the La Quinta Inn & Suites. Imagine that. Although the idea of someone spending extra time touching our toilet paper isn't that comforting.

Origami Gone Wild

June 12, 2006 at 4:32 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

And we thought towel origami was eccentric. A few photos from Flickr show a hotel in Egypt's flair for linens origami, essentially sculptures made from bed sheets, towels and covers. Although we have a sneaking suspicion that the guests placed these sculptures in a naughty position themselves.

Kama Sutra for Towels

February 2, 2006 at 1:31 PM | by GEM0330 | 2 Comments

If you thought bending and twisting while doing the Kama Sutra was tough, try adding towel twisting to your repetoire.

A highly seductive and somewhat dangerous art, Towel Origami has been embraced at hotels and Catholic (?) cruise ships world-wide, hoping that the little touch of towel origami might possibly bring on more than a smile.

Here are the towel origami-friendly hotels we have found thus far:

· JW Marriott and Spa, Phuket, Thailand-- the maids taught one couple how to do the designs.
· Chan-Kah Resort Village, Palenque, Mexico reportedly has excellent towel origami with petals too.
· Hyatt Regency Taba Heights, Taba, Egypt, find your beach towel transformed into a cobra.
· Sol Cayo Guillermo, Ciego de Avila, Cuba where recent guests commented that towel origami is always an appreciated touch.

Don't worry... if your hotel does not do towel origami, you can buy the book.

We only have one question though: Why do towel origami pieces need to wear sunglasses?
