Royal Hawaiian Introduces a Traditional Aha Aina Feast

The Royal Hawaiian is trying something to break out of its pink reputation and far away from that fugly carpet: it's getting all cultural on us with a big 'aha 'aina feast every Monday night.
This traditional celebration is a grand affair, although they've modernized it all a bit. Starting at 5:30pm, guests can turn up to the Ocean Lawn at the Royal Hawaiian resort and see old crafts like cloth-making in action, until the conch sounds to call everyone to a feast. The meal itself includes storytelling and then on full stomachs, guests can watch the Helumoa performance with hula dancing and singing.
Surely enough to take the sting out of the uber-pink hotel, this is the kind of cultural extravaganza that will make your Hawaiian vacation more than just a sunshine-y escape. It doesn't come cheap though: the standard rate for the Aha Aina is $175 per person (plus tax), although there are cheaper rates if you're staying at the Royal Hawaiian, where double room rates in the next couple of months start around $350.

The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, where the Canadian Opera Company performs.
If you like the history and culture of opera but can't stand that high-pitched singing, the Toronto Hilton has a nice alternative for you with its Appetite for Opera program. You don't have to listening to foreign squeals all night, but instead you get to eat a whole lot of great food.
The Toronto Hilton's Tundra restaurant is working in combination with the Canadian Opera Company to run three Appetite for Opera evenings over the next nine months: to get exact, on September 25, January 22, 2009 and May 6, 2009.

Hotels Still Making Money Off Politics-Themed Gimmicks :: D.C. Foodie Edition
Since the hotel industry is never one to shy away from banking off of whatever political happening may roll in some extra dough, the Loews Madison Hotel is offering a special Inauguration Menu from January 10-25, 2009 to give you ample time to celebrate the inauguration of your candidate of choice -- or drown your sorrows in a bellyfull of toffee pudding or praline souffle.
Chef Arnel Esposo of Palette restaurant will cook up his versions of official inaugural luncheon food from over the years -- that is, a three-course, prix fixe menu inspired by (not replicating!) the food served at the luncheons hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies over the last few decades.
