The Jane Hotel Officially Opens Their Ballroom and Yes, You Can Drink There

There's been a lot of confusion in recent weeks about whether or not The Jane Hotel will be getting a rooftop bar and whether or not there is a liquor license on the property. But with the opening today of the hotel's ballroom, we can assure you that yes, you can drink here and you will have plenty of space to do so.

The Jane Ballroom is just a grand name for an expansive bi-level lobby bar. There is a narrow bar on the first level that's tucked away from the larger sitting area, giving it an intimate feel especially as its lined with fancy seat benches. Directly above that is another bar, complete with small tables and chairs and more sofa seating. This bar also overlooks the sitting area of the ballroom and from up here, you are nearly eye to eye with the giant weathered disco ball hanging from the ceiling. (It used to hang in hotelier Sean MacPherson's house in Los Angeles.)

No Pool or Rooftop Bar for The Jane Hotel?

The rumor mill is a-churnin' with some bad news for Sean MacPherson's Jane Hotel. If you'll recall, before the property even opened, we'd heard all about an awesome rooftop bar and an indoor pool area that were both supposed to be coming to the property in the near future — the rooftop was meant to be the hotel's central social scene, while the pool was headed to the basement for some year-round swimming action.

But commenter Laksmi Devi dropped by yesterday to say:

Last week community Board #2 unanimously voted against a rooftop terrace at the jane hotel unless the owners can furnish proof (original plans) showing that such a terrace existed when the jane was first designed and built. They asked Mcpherson why he didn't just refurbish the pool instead of sink all of this money into the rooftop terrace and hestted that the hotel did not have the money to renovate the pool. Business is so bad that they are renting rooms for $75 a night and most rooms are vacant on a nightly basis.

Wait, so, no more pool in the basement at all? And now no more rooftop bar? Sadly, this is the second tip we've gotten with the same info (another wrote in to tell us that the rooftop terrace/bar was unanimously vetoed by all community board members at the end of March). Sad! Say it ain't so!

Got any more dirt on the Jane? Tell us what's up.

After seeing our story that the Jane Hotel was indeed open and indeed did have $99 rooms available, JetsetCD immediately booked a night at the hotel. Enjoy.

It's not everyday we get to sleep where survivors of the Titanic were once sheltered, but that's exactly what we did yesterday at the newly-opened Jane Hotel.

We've given you a couple of glimpses into the delightfully weird Jane, historic SRO housing turned micro-boutique property from hoteliers Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode.

Now we can finally count ourselves a survivor as well, of their 50-square-foot "cabins" and shared bathrooms. Be sure to stay tuned for the full review tomorrow, complete with a video room tour and a load more pics.

And yes, that is the hotel's room key, but we are also just happy to see you.

Sneak Peek, Part Two :: What Else is Going to Be Inside The Jane Hotel

In our story yesterday about the upcoming Jane Hotel from hoteliers Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode, we largely focused on the micro-rooms that would be opening up in mid-August (does that qualify as an oxymoron? Anything with the word "large" next to "micro-rooms" must be.)

However, you aren't going to want to hole up in your room here--not when there will be so much action going on downstairs, upstairs and below stairs.

Sneak Peek :: A First Look at The Jane Hotel

We were lucky enough to get a guided tour of the work-in-progress that is The Jane Hotel from none other than the supercool hotelier himself, Sean MacPherson.

While much of the place is still under construction as it transforms from rundown SRO housing to the budget-chic Jane, we were still able to see just how interesting this place will be when it opens.

We say interesting because if you know Sean MacPherson's work, along with his partner Eric Goode, they aren't in the business of building sterile, white boxes for people to spend the night. Although, it's funny we should say boxes....
