We have a few fears about staying in hotels, usually centered around someone breaking into our room and the hotel overcharging us for WiFi, but now we have "shootout" to add to the list.

A gunman walked into the lobby of the Omni Hotel Downtown Austinand killed a 60-year-old cab driver, before being shot to death by police offers. The incident happened at around 5am on Sunday morning, after 911 received a call from the hotel with a report of a man walking around the lobby carrying a gun. Police arrived on the scene to find a man carrying a rifle and a body on the ground. When the suspect pointed the gun at police, they returned gunfire, killing him near the hotel's restaurant.

The gunman was later identified as Michael Holt, who rented a desk from a start-up incubator called Capital Factory, which has operations inside the Omni Hotel's building. This shooting comes nearly a week after another deranged gunman killed 27 tourists in Tunisia.

We suspect the restaurant will be out of service at the Omni Hotel for at least a few days while the crime scene continues to be investigated but you'd never know that from the Omni Hotel's website which makes no note of the incident or of any closures. Omni Hotel's Facebook page has also remained silent on the matter. We reached out to an Omni rep but have not heard back with a comment on the shooting.

Tomorrow, the hotel is hosting Trailer Food Tuesdays and according to that group's Facebook page, the event is still on. We found rooms at the hotel tomorrow night starting from $269.

Austin to Get Another 'Grand' Hotel, The Hotel Granduca

May 1, 2015 at 11:10 AM | by | ()

Remember that hotel boom we were forecasting for Austin? Well, keep in mind that it won't just be contained to downtown. As we learned at South By Southwest, many of Austin's destination resorts are located out of the city limits. And don't forget about West Austin and the Barton Creek area, which will get a brand new hotel this fall.

The newest addition is Hotel Granduca Austin, a 9-story luxury boutique property located near the creek and amongst the hills, a 15-minute ride from downtown. It will have 194 rooms, six meeting rooms, and a 3,506 square foot ballroom. The hotel will feature Tuscan-inspired décor with Italian art and linens, and the hotel's in-house restaurant, Ristorante Visconti, will serve Northern Italian Cuisine. There's free Wifi, and the hotel will provide transportation to University of Texas football games.

SXSW May Be Over But Here are Some Hotel Tips for 2016

April 2, 2015 at 2:05 PM | by | ()

By now, everyone knows that South by Southwest Festival is one of the busiest times of the year in Austin, and that if you want to stay in a hotel while you're there (as opposed to renting a place), you need to get on your horse and book early, probably about six months in advance. And, of course, you should expect inflated rates given the high demand.

But what else should you be considering? Do all the hotels become party venues? Are there nearby resorts within a short drive? Are group options available? We asked Shilpa Bakre of the Austin CVB some commonly asked questions that will help you plan your stay next March:

These Two Fort Worth Hotels Highlight the City's Now and Then History

January 21, 2015 at 1:16 PM | by | ()

Hotel Texas in Fort Worth

Fort Worth is well-known for its friendly rivalry with Dallas, one that pins the country feel of the former against the modern development of the latter. But there's a ying and yang within Fort Worth itself as well. Downtown Fort Worth is developing nicely into a mini-metro, yet the Stockyards remain frozen in time, a tribute to the city's origins as a town of cowboys and cattle.

Experiencing this contrast between city and cowboy when visiting Fort Worth is a must, and your hotel selection can go a long way towards achieving this.

Downtown's old Hotel Texas is loaded with modern history, while the Stockyards Hotel takes us back to the days of cops and robbers.

Wake Up With John Wayne At Hotel Derek

Derek's pool

Ever fantasized about waking up with a celebrity? Actually, that hardly needs a question. We know you’ve done it, and we all know how that fantasy goes. Hotel bed, rumpled sheets, pillows shmooshed and a glass of champagne on the table. Shower running and the dulcet tones of singing to themselves under the water, acting as your sweet alarm clock.

Ok, so we can’t exactly make that happen, but we can get you part of the way, by telling you about the Hotel Derek in Houston, which has none other than John Wayne delivering its wake up calls.

And no, “Rise and shine sleepyhead, it’s time to giddy up and get those feet on the ground,” may not be the romantic arousal you were envisioning, but you can’t have everything, plus John Wayne strikes us as the type who’d have enjoyed a bit of flirtatious banter.

All Work And No Play Makes Jack... The Hardest Working Hotel Dog In Texas

Jack and Marcus

If there’s anything that’ll make us fall for a hotel, it’s a hotel pet. And although Norman the Scooter Dog is a tough cute-hotel-doggy act to follow, here’s a worthy successor: Jack, the delectable Australian Shepherd here, who lives at the Lone Star Court, an old-motel-turned-retro-hotel in Austin.

Jack actually lives on site – above the front office with his GM roommate, Marcus Latner. But unlike you and me, Jack actually likes his roommate – so he spends the day on property, doing whatever Marcus is doing. Except, that is, when he’s chowing down on a deer antler (one that Marcus especially got for him, rather than the antler table lamps in the rooms).

Remember the tooth fairy? That generous spirit who arrived during the night to alleviate the pain of losing our baby teeth with a few coins -- or paper, if we were really lucky?

The two Hotel ZaZas in Dallas and Houston remember her and are celebrating this year's National Tooth Fairy Day (um, that's August 22nd, didn't you know?) with a special dental-themed package.

The Stoneleigh In Dallas Has Morphed Into a Le Meridien

The most historic hotel in Dallas has officially changed hands, but all of the historic flair of The Stoneleigh Hotel will remain untouched just under the Le Meridien name.

The hotel, originally built in 1923, has seen plenty of stars through out the years; it was where Hollywood's movers and shakers stayed while visiting the Texas city. It has seen everyone from Elvis Presley, Judy Garland and Katharine Hepburn in its glory days, to Jessica Simpson and Lebron James more recently after a 2008 refurb.

The new owners, HEI Hotels, plan to update the lobby-bar with modern furniture and take advantage of the unique courtyard to attract Dallas' social-set to the Uptown area hotel. Already, the landmark Beaux-Arts building has changed the restaurant name to T/X, and serving up revamped Latin-American cuisine. We do appreciate when hotels give their properties a little love and spruce things up a bit, even when they're historical legends.

Ritz-Carlton, Dallas Does Room Service In True Savory Texas Style

Texas pecan pie for room-service dessert? Yee-haw!

It seems the room-service debate will never go away. Some people call us suckers for succumbing to ordering it, others find it a life-saver in those wee hours when we’re feeling a bit peckish and don’t feel like going out on a food hunt.

But today we’re not debating whether it’s a good idea or not, we’re going to celebrate what we consider one of the most interesting in-room dining room menus we've encountered in a while, and since it’s near quitting time, it’s time for food porn, anyway.

This submission comes courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas. Instead of yawn-worthy, limp Caesar salads and uninspired burgers, this hotel is bringing the goods with a Lone Star State-twist. We’re talking chilaquiles with smoked short rib hash, mini-elk sausage corn dogs with Dr.Pepper barbecue sauce, “Sous Vide” beef tacos, and Texas pecan pie.

And there's more, so much finger-licking more, after the jump.

Sheryl Crow Has Some Fun At the Sam Houston Hotel

Nothing like a little celebrity appearance to make a hotel re-opening event really sparkle, and that's what happened last week when Sheryl Crow turned up at the Sam Houston (which used to be called The Alden).

The 100-room hotel recently completed renovation work on all guest rooms, suites, and public spaces (the rooms now "combine clean decor with contemporary touches," which is a good thing, since the hotel's been around since 1924!), and has spent the past month celebrating its grand re-opening. Meanwhile, Sheryl Crow has a new album coming out, and she was in town doing promo at a local radio station.

The opportunity was too good to pass up!

Houston to Get Three Marriotts Under One Roof

Oh no they didn't!

Marriott announced this week they'll open a third - yes, a third - hotel inside Houston's historic Humble Oil Building by converting 82 apartments into hotel rooms. A new 166-room SpringHill Suites, slated to open in 2015, will join the 191-room Courtyard and the 171-room Residence Inn already residing in the building.

Apparently, Marriott doesn't think three's a crowd. We have seen examples of two brands under one roof, but we can't come up with another site that houses three hotels of the same parent company. There will be 528 hotel rooms in total if you treat them as one conglomerate, but it's not even close to being the biggest dog in town. The Hilton Americas-Houston, for example, has 1,200 rooms.
