Whether you’re doing anything from subscribing to a magazine to buying a car, everyone is offering rebates in a desperate attempt to get even a little of your money, and luxury hotels like Santa Barbara’s Bacara Resort and Spa seem to be spearheading the trend these days.

From now through May 21, 2009, the tony Bacara Resort, a favorite of tabloid fodder celebrities like “Speidi” and Nick Lachey, is offering its “Great Resort Rebate.” That means you get $100 resort credit when you book a room starting at $395 a night, or $200 when you book a $695/night suite. The room deal sounds better to us on a strictly numbers basis.

Tax Season Makes Us Want to Drink Tax-Tinis

We believe that anything tax-related calls for a martini. Whether a drink is in order to celebrate the fact that you've finally finished your taxes, a drink is necessary to take the edge off the pressure of the looming deadline or a drink is a hey-why-not way to spend that good ol' tax return check, someone at Four Seasons likes where your head's at (so to speak).

Through April, the Four Seasons Chicago is offering up a "Tax Tini" menu with tax-themed (teehee) cocktails for your slurping pleasure. For $13 each (inclusive of tax, natch) in the Four Seasons Bar and Lounge, you can choose from four cutesy martinis: the Auditini, the 1040 Easy, The Exemption, or the Stimulus Check.

If you want to stir (or shake) up your own at home or, um, you won't be in Chi-town anytime soon, our tax-season gift to you is a recipe for the 1040 Easy you see in the photo right here.

1040 EASY
· 1 oz Absolut Mandrin
· 1 oz Apple Pucker
· .5 oz Triple Sec
· Splash Homemade Sweet and Sour
· Splash of 7-Up

Happy taxing!

Look Forward to Tax Day with $4.15 NYC Hotel Rooms

March 23, 2009 at 10:41 AM | by JetSetCD | 2 Comments

Just like rhythm, the tax man is gonna get you, and thankfully hotels are more sympathetic this year. In New York, where you'd be hard-pressed to find someone not directly affected by the economy, Apple Core Hotels, a collection of five budget-friendly hotels in the center of Manhattan, are swooping in to save tax day with $4.15 rooms for the first two weeks of April.

The "Tax Time" package, which even includes free breakfast and coffee along with a central location in the Big Apple, can be had by calling one of the five Apple Core properties—Comfort Inn, The Hotel at Times Square, La Quinta, Red Roof and Ramada East Side—and entering your name into a drawing for the rooms, with ten nights at $4.15 up for grabs. In this case, you can score a room in areas like Midtown or next to the Empire State Building for less than the cost of your Turbo Tax software.

Just be prepared to have your taxes done early enough to enjoy a trip to New York between April 1-April 15, when the $4.15 room rate is valid, and make sure to give the Apple Core reservations line (800-567-7720) a call to register for the promo by March 29. Then, if you do get a nice fat refund from the government, it'll be like they paid you to come to New York anyways.

Leona Helmsley To Cover Your Room Tax From the Grave

If only hotel mogul Leona Helmsley — who famously said, "Only the little people pay taxes" — had served those 18 months of punishment in the slammer in 2009, she might have been a celebrated pop culture icon worthy of some good Daily Show and The Soup fodder.

Regardless, the late, great "Queen of Mean" certainly knows how to keep it newsworthy just in time for tax season. April 15th might as well be named Leona Helmsley Day as the New York Helmsley Hotel is offering tax-free rooms cheekily in her honor on the very day most of us file. Not too shabby considering New York city tax went up to 5.875 percent from 5 percent back in March.

That's right guests, now you too can dodge tax payment, only this time let Mrs. Helmsley's estate foot the tax bill for a night. (That's a savings of $50 on a $250 badly-in-need-of-renovations room.) How is that for some afterlife irony? Just stay away from Trouble.

Five room nights each weekend will be awarded exclusively through Twitter. The promotion also includes the "Westin Tax Credit," a coupon given at check-out for 10 percent off dinner at L.A. Prime, the property's New York-style steakhouse. Winners who book a second consecutive night with the property will receive a 20 percent off coupon to the restaurant.
