Eurail Hotel Stop: The Museum at Zurich's Widder Hotel

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Rennweg 7, Zurich, Switzerland, 8001
July 11, 2007 at 10:00 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

You can fly around Europe cheaply now or you can really see something by taking the train, and the best Europe-wide ticketing agency Eurail has just relaunched their website. A very popular Eurail stop is Zurich (it seems everybody wants to stop in Switzerland, since it's right in the middle!). And for somewhere to stay in Zurich, the Widder Hotel has a lot going for it.

It's been created by renovating eight historic houses and turning them into 42 rooms and seven suites and it's filled with modern furniture from all the big name designers - the only downside here is that some might think the ultra-modern interior is too much of a contrast to the outside.

As far as service goes, the staff are good at learning your name, and inside the rooms the beds are comfortable and facilities include everything you need, including Wifi. There's also a hi-tech fitness room and even a butcher's museum - just what you always wanted in a hotel.

Check our hotels near Eurail stops map.

Cubicle Dreamin': Luxurious Views in Davos

Site Where: Buolstrasse 3, Davos, Switzerland, 7270
January 29, 2007 at 9:45 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

Cubicle Dreamin' is a feature in which we ask the hotel mavens to take some time out of their busy work day, surf the Internet, and tell us what hotel they wish they could beam themselves to right that very second--all on the slave driving companies dime, of course. Oh, like these people aren't surfing aimlessly anyway--at least now their purposeless clicking will be cobbled together into useful hotel stories--we hope. Have a destination hotel you are just dying to leave your cube for? Send the story our way.

In this episode, Hotel Maven Amanda K picks out her first choice if she ruled the world. Enjoy.

With pictures of smiling politicians being beamed around the world this week from Davos, Switzerland, I got to thinking about where I would stay if someone would put me up in Davos for a week. And my pick is the luxurious Waldhotel Bellevue Davos. Management is very proud about it living up to the "beautiful view" name:

It commands a breathtaking view over the picturesque town, down the valleys to the distant peaks. Year round, the panorama is captured by every south-facing balcony - and almost every bedroom has one! The gastronomic restaurant, too, makes a feast of the view! So does the umbrella's terrace!

Okay, we're not quite sure what the last bit means, but the gist is definitely "we have perfect views". It also features a typically European "Wellness" center and a saltwater indoor pool. Proud, too, of a visit from Thomas Mann, the gourmet restaurant Mann und Co. bears his name, and boasts plenty of good wines to go with the French and regional food--and a five-course candelit dinner. Prices are not quite as scary as you'd expect, though they come close to doubling in the winter ski season. But what would you expect for the world's best view?

Suisse Majestic Has 'Delicious Wood Floors'

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 45, av. des Alpes,, Montreux, Switzerland, Ch-1820
September 21, 2006 at 1:49 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

[Ed. Note: Hotel Maven Ann recently spent some time at the Suisse-Majestic in Switzerland and has written us, lavishing praise upon the  "heavenly" hotel. Sample phrase? "Delicious wood floors." Here's the experience from start to finish]

My husband and I wandered down the escalators at the Montreux train station. I knew that our hotel, the Suisse-Majestic, was somewhere near the station. I asked a woman if she knew where it might be - she immediately wheeled around and pointed across the street to the hotel, about 15 paces away. And so began our delightful stay in this superb old hotel that is indicative of Swiss cordiality, promptness, and old-world charm.

Palace Lausanne is Smokin'

If you're staying in a palace, you can expect a little luxury. And since this isn't yours or your friend's palace, you can also expect some big prices. Especially since the location we're talking about is in the not-so-cheap land of Switzerland. But if you want a weekend away in beautiful surroundings and deluxe quarters, the Palace Lausanne is your place.

So what can you expect in a palace? Free WiFi for starters proves this place isn't stuck in the past. Rooms have individually controlled climate remotes, terry cloth robes, stereo sound in the bathroom, and just more good ol' luxury. The hotel also has a spa and restaurant.

But in all of these incredible reviews, we finally broke the case. If you're a smoker, this truly will be your paradise, if not, prepare to live your palace existence in a cloud of smoke:

Our whole experience at the Lausanne Palace was spoilt to a considerable degree by the smell of cigarette smoke that pervades the entire hotel - including the non-smoking suite on the non-smoking floor we were on!

All restaurants in the hotel allow smoking throughout - even at breakfast! As non-smokers used to far greater control of smoking in the UK and US, we found it really off-putting.

Unless you're totally averse to cigarette smoke, French parts of Europe should probably be avoided. If you are OK with it, sign up for the Palace Lausanne newsletter and take advantage of big time promotions via email.

Chalet Wishes

August 15, 2006 at 12:51 PM | by Courtney | 0 Comments

The New York Post has come up with some ways of escaping the city before the glorious summer break is over. If you haven't gone to the Hamptons and are still in need of your getaway, try their Swiss suggestion. The Post advised skipping the Matterhorn but, opting for rest of the hiking trails around Zermatt. This way you can live to tell your tale.

Zermatt is one of those typical Swiss towns where you'll feel like putting two braids in or wearing suspenders. The only place you could really stay in a town like this, would be a chalet. So, voila the Hotel Daniela, described as such by a past guest:

A little gem in a magical mountain village plucked out of a Swiss history novel. The Daniella is wooden chalet with cozy rooms and balconies that face the mythical Matterhorn. A skylight filled our bathroom with natural light and the medicine cabinets contained all sorts of niceties. They even remembered the bathrobes and slippers.

Starting in mid September and running through mid November is the off season and rooms start at 64 francs. The trails will still be there, the hotel spa, and the Matterhorn too...who knows maybe even some little men in the hills singing about Ricola.
