Swissotels' Executive Lounges are Getting a Swish New Look

June 19, 2013 at 10:24 AM | by | Comments (0)

Swissotels is glamming up their hotels' executive lounges and to start, they've created a mini-version at their headquarters in Zurich. But unlike most hotel companies who keep their model rooms under lock and key, Swissotels is putting theirs on full display to the public.

The new DesignLab, as it's called, resembles a modern “Arvenstübli” or pine parlour which combines traditional Swiss design with contemporary design and technology. Here, DesignLab creator Karsten Schmidt and Director of Interior Design for Swissotels, breaks down the pine parlour elements:

“Drawers and furniture have been decorated with ornaments in the style of traditional Swiss Sgraffito, which is still to be found on the facade of many buildings in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.

The engravings and carvings originate from the Appenzeller wood-carver Roman Räss, who has created a name for himself outside of the well-known woodcarving town of Brienz, with his contemporary work and art projects. Selected design pieces such as the Bell Tables of Sebastian Herkner for ClassiCon, the book merry-go-round of Roderick Vos for Linteloo, the Etch Lights of Tom Dixon, the moooi chairs by Marcel Wanders or the Eames Rocking Chair of C. and B. Eames for Vitra, supplement the ambience in the new DesignLab."

What’s Out, What’s In: Working In Instead of Out

May 17, 2013 at 2:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

We've started a series of what’s trending in hotels these days: What’s Out, What’s In. Do we like what we see? Think it's a dud? You be the judge!

What's Out: Trekking to the hotel gym

What's In: In-room workouts that rival a personal training session

The hotel gym. We know people use ‘em, but sometimes it’s hard to find that last bit of energy needed to drag yourself out of your room after a busy day of sightseeing or making deals. Or maybe you’re just jet-lagged and are up at 3 a.m. thinking, “Man – I could really go for a workout right now.” At these hotels, the gym comes to you.

Dorchester Collection’s new contemporary hotel 45 Park Lane in London offers you an exclusive in-room workout with fitness guru and trainer to the stars, Matt Roberts, through a bespoke and full-body in-room video program. The hotel committed to get fit during the London Olympics and got Matt to create five workouts, each video focusing on a different area of the body using the furniture at hand. (We’re not suggesting they’re copying us here at HC, but sort of like our Sweat-Worthy Hotel Room Exercises series we brought you about a month or so ago.)

When you leave you’ll also get a freebie Matt at 45 Park Lane Fitness Pack which includes step-by-step training techniques for beginners through pros, a healthy eating plan, and “in the know” tips from the trainer -- things only Matt Roberts and Naomi Campbell knew till now.

At Raffles Praslin Seychelles space is your friend if you want to have an in-room workout. In the privacy of your own 410 sq ft (minimum) villa, with a vast outdoor terrace looking out over the ocean, you can do as many Sun Salutations as you want without bumping into the furniture. All villas already include a yoga mat and, at your mere request, the resort will deliver a fitness kit consisting of a dumbbell set, skipping rope, stability ball, resistance band and a selection of exercise DVDs. If that’s not enough to get you going you can arrange for an in-room personal trainer to take you through your paces with a customized exercise program.

And don't forget, HotelChatter's Sweat-Worthy Workouts: Can't afford to hire a personal trainer to come to your room? Or more likely, are you staying in a property that doesn't have a gym or in-room fitness videos? We've got you covered with our five sweat-worthy workouts, all of which you can do in your hotel room. Watch the videos for instructions on the different body parts to work out. You're very welcome!

Swissôtel Unveils Its First Signature Rooms at the Métropole

Swissôtels has recently revealed the first of its new “signature rooms” at Geneva's Swissôtel Métropole in the city's shopping and business quarter and close to the Old Town. Twelve rooms in total have been renovated for the launch of this category that focuses on design and comfort, with some pretty nifty tech advances, too.

Naturally, being a Swiss brand, the design follows an alpine motif as inspiration, including parquet wood floors and--the show stopper--a colorful wall that's reminiscent of Swiss Alp mountain flowers. Sounds delightful, doesn’t it? The exclusive wallpapers for this scene were designed for the hotel by renowned Swiss textile manufacturer Jakob Schlaepfer, who supplies luxury fashion houses such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Vivienne Westwood with material goods.

Then there's the good stuff for hotel tech geeks out there.

Swissotel Surprises With A Goa Resort This Spring

We thought we'd covered it all when it came to the Swissôtels brand. Apparently not. Somehow the snuck in and added another hotel to their ever increasing portfolio and will be opening a resort hotel in the popular Indian coastal state of Goa this spring.

Unlike the business-centric aura that the brand is known for, The Swissôtel Goa is definitely aimed at the leisure set, with its location and layout. The town of Calangute is a popular year-round vacation spot in North Goa, just a one hour flight away from Mumbai and Bangalore and two hours from Delhi.

Instead of a regular tower, the 135 guestrooms and suites will be spread out among eight three-level buildings which will be set in a tropical garden filled with lily ponds and a courtyard pool. The lobby and rooms will also be designed using colorful works by the Indian artist Krishna Mehta. This reminds us of the lively patterns seen in the Swissotel Dresden property, which also broke away from the mold (just a bit) and gave some pizzaz to the Swissôtel name.

Hotel Jet-Lag Cures For Holiday Travelers

December 26, 2012 at 5:45 PM | by | Comments (2)

No doubt many of you are traipsing around the world this holiday season, visiting friends and family. But unforch, the downside of jetsetting is the inevitable jetlag setting in. We’ve read and written about nearly every cure out there and damn near tried them all. Many are bunk, but these hotels’ jet-lag packages, spa treatments, amenities have actually worked on us, so we’re passing the info along so you can recover more quickly.

London: The Flotation Bed therapies (75 minutes/$185) at the InterContinental London Park Lane’s spa have been a godsend after a transatlantic flight that’s too long to consider a hop, but too short to get Ambien-ed out. Businessmen swear by the day spa’s quick and efficient capsule-like bed where you’re wrapped in a foil blanket.

The dry, weightless flotation device almost immediately eases the strain of being cooped on an airplane seat for hours. There’s a variety additions for the floats a less intense 45-minute Exotic Frangipani and Coconut Milk therapy, but for hardcore refreshing the Musclease Aromas Spa Ocean Float involves a scented pressure point facial massage and scalp treatment, which relaxes the tensest of muscles. We were knocked out in minutes and awoke feeling as if we could bike around Hyde Park, just outside the hotel, without breaking a sweat. And we did.

Swissôtel On A Roll With Sixth Hotel In Changsha, China

  Site Where: Changsha, Hunan, China
October 16, 2012 at 9:50 AM | by | Comments (0)

We’ve previously looked at what Swissôtel will be up to in Turkey (including its new extended-stay concept) and Dubai over the next years, after being impressed with their latest property in Dresden (and their serious approach to sleep). Looks like two resorts in Bodrum and one in Dubai isn’t enough action, with Swissôtel Changsha just added to the list for openings in 2014.

Where is Changsha and why there you ask? The capital of the Hunan province, Changsha is about 680 miles southwest of Shanghai, and a major transportation hub in the area. By the time the hotel opens, there will be a metro station connecting the east and west of the city next to the hotel, and Changsha will be a stop on a high-speed railway connecting Shanghai to Kunming (near the southwestern border with Myanmar (Burma), Laos, and Vietnam).

Living Large At The New Swissôtel Living Istanbul

There are some pretty swanky hotels found across this great big world, and Swissôtel Living in Istanbul is definitely one of them.

Swissôtel chose to launch their new extended stay concept hotel in cosmopolitan Istanbul, whose vibrant history is engraved in its culture. But as important as its traditions still are, Istanbul is definitely not a city stuck in the past, as evidenced by the makeover of this former residence and office rental building. Before the company took over the management of the property, located right beside its five-star Swissôtel The Bosphorus, the place was badly in need of a reno. After a top-to-bottom gut a la Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, it opened as the über-modern and luxe Swissôtel Living.

Last-Chance Rooftop Romps Before Fall Begins

September 21, 2012 at 12:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

We hate to see rooftop season go, and with fall officially beginning tomorrow, places will start closing up shop soon. Which is why we've asked our HotelChatter editors and contributors to pick their favorite hotel rooftops around the US and Europe in case you haven't visited one yet. Ever the optimists, we'll say there are a few weeks of prime rooftop hopping left before annoying things like rain, wind chill factor, and snow block us from the outdoor lounging we love so much.

Use this guide to get your pre-Fall affairs in order!

Pod 39, New York City
Word's gotten out about midtown's newest hotel rooftop bar, located on the 17th floor of the Pod 39. And why not? Enclosed by a series of majestic terra cotta columns and slender brick archways, the al fresco space feels more like a re-discovered Greek temple than the regular old Manhattan standby. But, it's a bar alright. Cocktails like the delicious Weathervane (rye whiskey, grapefruit juice, campari, ginger, and a sprig of fresh rosemary, $12) make a great accompaniment to up-close views of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and neighboring Queens. (ASchechter, Assistant Editor)

See the rest of the picks after the jump!

Swissôtel, W Hotel, and Ritz-Carlton Plan Way Into The Hotel Future

September 13, 2012 at 1:32 PM | by | Comments (0)

2013, 2014, 2015, 2016...they're all on the distant horizon. While we've still got 2012 to get through, hotel companies are already planning their next moves and it looks like Dubai, Panama, Turkey and Tunisia will be getting some love!

First up are three gorgeous new properties from Swissôtels, which blew us away this year with the colorful new Swissôtel Dresden. Up next are two hotels in Turkey: a beach resort (pictured) and a city resort, both in Bodrum, which sits on the Aegean Sea across from Greece.

The beach resort will feature 66 rooms complemented by additional villas and terraces residences. Oh, and that pool? Yes please. Meanwhile, the separate 56-room city resort will be in the hills of Bodrum with incredible views of the surrounding city. Both hotels are scheduled to open in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Plus, we're told today that in early 2016, the company's second Middle East hotel will open, the Swissôtel Jadaf Dubai. The luxury property will sit within a giant complex of 3 other hotels, residences, and retail outlets—because in Dubai, you're never more than five feet from a mall of some sort—and contain 280 rooms, an all-day restaurant, three specialty restaurants and a Purovel Spa.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful or funky or luxe a hotel is – if they don’t take sleeping seriously, they’re missing the point entirely. If we don’t get our proper shuteye, then we’re seeing all of the amenities and other hotel niceties through bleary eyes coated with a thick layer of crankiness.

The following hotels are down with the whole sleep thing and want to make it as easy as possible for you.

Your Rental Car Decision Can Decrease Your Swissotel Bill

A unique green initiative has hit the shores of Australia and we hope that other hoteliers pick up on the trend. Sydney's Swissotel now offers free valet service for guests who rock up in a hybrid vehicle. This offer is a first for any hotel across the city and, to our knowledge, across the country.

Sydney can be considered, Australia's most congested city, with as many as 700,000 cars clogging up the thoroughfares everyday. The environmental consideration prompts visitors to rethink their choices for cars when at the rental agency. In all, this is not only good for the planet, but good for your credit card since valet parking will set you back $55AUD per night.
