Two Lobbies Fit for Hotel Geeks at the Shangri-La Singapore

Reception at the Tower Wing (left) and reception at the Valley Wing (right)
It's really a tale of two lobbies, the Shangri-La Singapore. There's the original, red and gold grand lobby of the Tower Wing, opened in the early 1970s. Then, there's the white marble and gold of the modern Valley Wing next door. While the Valley Wing has its exclusivity and free champagne and fancy breakfast in the Summit Room, the Tower Wing has that classic appeal plus many mega chandeliers and the many decades of afternoon tea enjoyed on the Rose Veranda.
Yes, you already know what major hotel geeks we areheck, you are reading this on HotelChatter.com, but please let us stress the appeal of the main Shangri-La lobby to those who really appreciate these things. It's a proper grand dame lobby, but with the added intricacies of Asian feng shui and luck-influenced interior design.

Inside a Deluxe Suite in the Valley Wing of the Shangri-La Singapore
Did you know...that the Shangri-La Singapore is the original of the Shangri-La chain of properties? Did you also know that it is a hotel with three distinct wings, each with a different feel and luxury level? Serious hotel geeks will have answered yes to both, but it's no matter because right now, we're taking you inside the a Deluxe Suite in the Valley Wing, a one-bedroom abode with butler service, signature Shangri-La orchids all over the place, andjoy of joysfree champagne and decadent nibbles.
You can't get much fancier than this at the Shangri-La Singapore; there's only two room categories higher than the Deluxe (a 2-bedroom and the Shangri-La Suite), and its location in the Valley Wing means a separate, more private entrance and lobby, complimentary breakfast in the formal Summit Room, and round-the-clock extras (like afternoon tea or mini dessert cakes) at a lobby bar. This is where you'll find the complimentary, free-flowing champagne...and wine...and everything else. Pour your own Perrier? Pssh! In the evening, there's a proper attendantstarched shirt and welcoming smileto do all that bothersome cap-twisting for you.

A Look at the Outer Space Suite Inside Singapore's Wanderlust Hotel
It's been in magazines and on design blogs aplenty, but the "Space" Suite at Singapore's Wanderlust Hotel is a space you've got to see with your own eyes to appreciate.
Every duplex suite on the top floor of this 29-room hotel in the Little India neighborhood has been conceptualized by local design company fFurious; the "Space" suite is just one of the many looks, and by far the most popular. Maybe the allure comes from the mystery of outer space, or a youth spent sleeping under astronaut-covered sheets? Our guess: it's because the room is pitch-black with only a fiber optic ceiling of stars at nightgreat for a fantasy night of romance or if you're anticipating a crazy hangover.

At the Raffles Hotel Singapore: Inside a Grand Hotel Suite
Two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a parlour, a private verandah and butler serviceit must be a suite. Indeed it is, but the Raffles Singapore is exclusively comprised of suites, and this Grand Hotel Suite is but one of the higher categories.
What distinguishes the Grand Hotel suite from the others below it (Courtyard suite, Palm Court suite, Personality suite) is its location just up the Raffles' grand lobby staircase, in the main hotel building. The others, you see, are located in a neighboring wing, around a private "residents only" courtyard.
Okay, it also boasts far more original art, more antique furniture, the extra bedroom and bathroom, a separate office and living area. Add to that the fact that it costs an extra zero from the lowest category suite ($750 SGD for a courtyard suite versus $7500 SGD/$6000 USD for a grand hotel suite), and we are dealing with serious lodgings here.

Life is Suite in the Refreshed Rooms at the Four Seasons Miami
Ever since the Four Seasons Miami freshened up its rooms last fall, we've been trying to get in and take a peek. That's been problematic because the hotel has been consistently sold out.
Last week, we finally got a look at a couple of suites (yep, the regular rooms were all booked), located on the 28th and 29th floors of the tower.
Even though they're suites--and pretty sweet ones at that, with oodles of space and panoramic views--you can get a good idea of what the regular rooms look like from scoping out the pictures in our gallery. The color schemes are similar, and the soft furnishings and new-look window seats are the same in the entry-level rooms--also pretty spacious at a generous 500 square feet.

The Bathroom at the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong Will Leave You with an Extra Clean Feeling
Don't ask us how but last night we ended up inside a suite at the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, the tallest hotel building in the world, and when we went to check out the loo, we squealed with excitement as we instantly knew we found an excellent Bathroom Tuesdays story.
The commode inside this specialty suite on the 116th floor has its own hand-held shower right next to the toilet, complete with a drain and everything. So, in a sense, it's a hand-held bidet.
But that's not the only luxury item in the bathroom. There's also a giant soaking tub with its own 26" flatscreen TV, Aqua di Parma toiletries and a massive walk-in closet. Oh and we can't forget about the views. We snapped a pic of the tub when the gilded doors behind it were closed but if you want to soak and stare, just push the doors back and voila! The whole of Victoria Harbour is in front of you.

Why We (and Celebs) Like Lagoon Suites vs. Beach Suites

Last year, we named the Ocean View Suites at Rosewood Mayakoba one of HotelChatter's 10 Sexiest Hotel Rooms Alive! This is a fact.
However, after returning to the property this fall, we were introduced to a new breed of sexy hotel suite: the Lagoon Suite.
At first, we were all like, "why would we wanna stay here, where we might see a crocodile swimming below our bedroom floor?" Then we had the pleasure of bunking down in a lagoon suite for a few nights and voila! We were converted. And now we know why so many of the celebs who stay at this ritzy Riviera Maya retreat also opt for the lagoon over the ocean view suites. (Said celebs may or may not include: Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp, U2, TomKat and Suri, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.)
Scroll down for a few more reasons to love the lagoon...

Mandarin Oriental Paris Unveils Its Newest Suite Offerings

Just when we thought the new Mandarin Oriental Paris with its pretty rooms and its own cake shop in the lobby, couldn't get any suiter, the luxury hotel has just opened up 39 new suites, including seven duplex suites located on the seventh and eighth floors of the hotel. The top floor suites, combined with the Royale Oriental Suite can even be adjoined to create the largest hotel suite in Paris at 10,764-sq.ft.
With so many suite options, it might be hard to decide on which one is best. Ok, who are we kidding? Probably any suite here will be amazing but if you are really particular the Broderies de Cristal suite offers a Parisian-apartment-like layout with views of the Opera and Montmartre.
On the top floor are the individual Atelier suites which each have a distinctive design and windows that open onto the rooftops of Paris. But without a doubt, the best room in the house is the Royal Mandarin Suite (above) which at 3,767-sq.ft. is split over two floors and has views of Montmartre, the Garnier Opera, the Grand Palais, the Louvre and the Madeleine.

It Would Be a 'Mission Impossible' to Break Into Tom Cruise's Hotel Suite in New Delhi
It must be very good indeed to be Tom Cruise (your feelings about Scientology aside.) That's because while in India promoting his latest "Mission Impossible" movie, Tom stayed at the country's newest and most expensive hotel, The Leela Palace New Delhi in the city's diplomatic enclave of Chanakyapuri. And of course, he wasn't sleeping in a standard room.
No, Cruise rested his head in the hotel's Maharaja Suite which is billed as a "palace within a palace" and has six rooms, 24-hour butler services, spa rooms, a Jacuzzi, walk-in wardrobe and a private gym. The suite is also equipped with bullet proof glass and a private elevator, making it a Mission Impossible indeed to break into this hotel suite. Oh and the suite also comes with the use of a Rolls Royce Phantom. Some guys have all the luck.

Inside a Canyon View Suite at The Hotel Bel-Air
Welcome to our newest new feature, Design Thursdays! Thursdays are now our day to focus on hotel design through photo tours, video walkthroughs and interviews with hotel designers. Got a cool hotel design story we should know about? Let us know!
If you followed our live-blog of the recently reopened Hotel Bel-Air yesterday, you got to see a sneak peek of the new guestrooms and suites inside the hotel. (Missed it? Don't worry, it's still right here.) Today, we can show you a little more, starting off with the drop dead luxurious Canyon View Suite in the hotel's lower canyon--or more explicitly, to the left of the new lobby and restaurant.
These accommodations are the newest ones for the hotel (i.e. never existed before!) yet despite this, the Canyon View rooms and suites look very much a part of the hotel...on the outside that is. The exterior is the same pink as the other buildings and the modern stairways leading up to the rooms are the only real giveaway that this was not here before.
(Still, even if you were a frequent visitor to the Bel-Air before the renovations, you will find yourself second-guessing what was here before and what was not quite a bit. Everything but the pool looks so different.)

Around the Penthouse Suites and More of The Metropolitan Bangkok
It's hot in Bangkok, and often unbearably humid. The Metropolitan Bangkok knows this, which is why there are refresher towels waiting just inside the entrance to the lobby. Which is why there's an expansive indoor fitness facility complete with his and hers spa hottubs. Which is why there's a resort-quality outdoor swimming pool. Bangkok's urban tropical environment mean that guests at The Metropolitan are here for a multitude of reasons, from business to a getaway.
We were there as your usual tourists to Thailand, taking in every bit of the place and we've already shown you our Metropolitan room, but we also managed a peek into the Penthouse and COMO Suites while we were at it.

Move Over Tiffany, The St. Regis Has Now Opened a Dior Suite

We thought the astounding Tiffany Suite at the St. Regis New York was a genius fashion+hotel partnership but the hotel is now one-upping the suite success by partnering with fashion house, Dior.
The Dior Suite, room 1203, is now open to guests who want to pay $8,500 a night to sleep with their favorite designer fashion.
Womens' Wear Daily reports:
Consisting of a bedroom, one-and-a-half bathrooms, a dining room and living room, the suite’s design details were inspired by the house’s Parisian ateliers. The decadently designed, 1700-square-foot space is almost entirely “whispering” gray, the house’s signature shade. This is the hotel’s second go-around with the Parisian house, having opened an original Dior Suite in 1991.
