Bar crawls: Boozy. Lobster crawls: Bougie.

We’re not complaining. After all, this is something you'd expect in Kennebunk, the coastal Maine playground for the really rich and not-necessarily-famous. (Power is not measured in Twitter followers, dahling.) New Englanders heading up for a summer retreat at The White Barn Inn will now be able to book the “bespoke experience” of a customized “Crustacean Crawl” with the Relais & Chateau property’s esteemed chef Jonathan Cartwright. (He’s also the toque behind the fine dining Muse restaurants at two other tony Grace Hotels properties, Newport’s Vanderbilt Grace and Connecticut's Mayflower Grace.)

Kite flying and beach views from our room at Harbor Lights Resort

Traveling through Michigan’s beach towns last week, we were looking for something special, a beach hotel that was out of the out ordinary. Maybe it was for lack of an ocean, though Lake Michigan is so vast and impressive that it’s easy to be fooled. But we wanted a hotel with a little magic, a lot of sand and all the right amenities.

Pulling into Harbor Lights Resort right in lesser-known Frankfort, Michigan, we had a feeling this was the place. It wasn’t that anything was wildly impressive about the exterior of Harbor Lights, though it is a pretty complex with shades of dark gray and white. It was more that there was something about the place itself.

We often talk about tangible hotel amenities, but this hotel was all about the atmosphere. Harbor Lights is located at the end of Frankfort's main drag right on the beach, and though we were only in the parking lot and couldn’t yet see the water, we spied the tip of a lighthouse, the sun going down and sand on the walkways. You could hear the gulls and occasional motorized watercraft, but also the quiet din of a secluded beach. It was all the magic we needed... and we weren't even in our room yet.

A look inside Grand Hotel's new horse and carriage stable on opening day

We’ve all seen Grand Hotel’s striking front porch photo, the world’s largest at 600 feet. Set against the giant white wood-framed hotel, the blue waters of car-less Mackinac Island, the bursts of red geraniums, this famous porch gets lots of love and for good reason; the lofty, wrap-around water views are remarkable from here.

Looking Beyond the Front Porch
We just so happen to be rocking a chair on the porch right now as we’re here celebrating the hotel’s 125th anniversary, and the views really are quite outstanding.

But so are the views inside this giant treasure chest of a hotel. And with so many special events happening here through the weekend (Tuesday marked the Grand Hotel’s official 125th birthday) we can’t imagine a better time to pop off the lid and look around inside.

Finding a really great outdoor pool at a Chicago hotel used to be like finding a needle in a haystack. Sure, plenty of beautiful indoor pools abound, but where were the sparkly, sceney big pools in which to soak in all that summer sun? As if an answer to the sun seekers prayers, Chicago’s Radisson Blu Aqua now shines like a mirage in the middle of this big city, literally around the bend from Millennium Park, the Mag Mile, Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.

We recently stayed at the hotel and after one look at Blu Aqua’s huge recreation deck and pool, bailed on our room and jumped in for a swim. Situated on the third floor across 80,000 square feet, the very green deck is something to behold in Chicago. There’s the pool and cabanas plus a Jacuzzi and kiddie pool. Further beyond sits another large deck with gardens, gazebos and a 1/5 mile walking trail, grills and a fire pit, even a lower-level Zen garden complete with a rake. Everything is first come first serve.

Weeknight Rooms At Dream South Beach Going For $200, Chocolate Covered Strawberries Extra

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 1111 Collins Ave [map], Miami Beach, FL, United States, 33139-4604
May 4, 2012 at 11:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

Starting on June 1, Miami visitors can try out a King room at Dream South Beach, which is now in its second year, for $199/night, which is slightly higher than last year's opening rate of $149/night. But we're going to assume that after a year, they've had time to tidy up the edges and can get away with charging more.

The 108 rooms at the Collins Ave hotspot all have access to a rooftop infinity-edge pool, plus Geoffrey Zakarian's restaurant Tudor House, which we sampled last summer.

As a bonus to the $199/night rate, the hotel is also throwing in continental breakfast for two, a bottle of Perrier Jouet champagne, and chocolate-covered strawberries for an additional $50 fee. Which is another way of saying the room is actually $250/night, but with some light nibbles thrown in that still won't really fill you up so you'll just end up heading to Tudor House for dinner and drinks anyway.

What's that bright light over New York City today? Could it be ... sunshine? Oh, Hallelujah, the sun is out! We know it's Passover and Easter and all that, but onto more pressing matters: Booking summer vacations at the beach.

Andre Balazs's Sunset Beach Hotel opens for the season on Shelter Island on May 14. Weekend rates start at $420 a night, and Mid Week rates from $225 a night.
