HotelChatter Readers Share Summer Vacation Stories (Pt. II)

August 20, 2009 at 10:55 AM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

We’re back with Part Two of "How I Spent My Summer Vacation," with six more readers chiming in on where they went to unwind this summer. It's encouraging to see so many travelers taking advantage of vacation deals and airfare discounts. Sure beats a “staycation,” right?

· "Last month, I had a fabulous vacation in Micronesia’s Kosrae Island (one of just four states in Micronesia located about halfway between Honolulu and Sydney airports). The island is the most untouched I've ever seen and the natural beauty is breathtaking—above and under the water. I stayed at Pacific Treelodge Resort, which is owned by husband/wife team Mark Stevens and Maria Fanelli. Both Mark and Maria are dive instructors and great tour guides. Rates were about $100/night in a fully air conditioned bungalow (two rooms per structure). There's an adjoining hotel restaurant that literally serves the catch of the day (breakfast and lunch were a flat rate of $5; dinner could be $10-$20 depending on what you ordered). The hotel was literally across the street from a beautiful, scenic beach."

HotelChatter Readers Share Summer Vacation Stories (Pt. I)

Call us vacation voyeurs, or maybe we’re just nosy. Regardless, we put out an APB to our dear HotelChatter.com readers for the first installment of "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" and you replied in spades. Thank you. Here’s a post-play hotel report from seven of you valued readers and jetsetters.

(If you haven't joined in on the conversation yet, tell us where you stayed this summer, and what you loved/loathed about your hotel experiences.)

· "I stayed at Point Lookout Resort in Northport, ME. The first time this place has been open to the public. It's a former MBNA Bank corporate retreat on 400 acres in the Mid-Coast region of Maine. All accommodations are private cabins, but I describe them as 'business casual' because they're decorated like a luxury hotel room with leather chairs, polished pine floors/walls/ceilings and screened porches. My favorite parts: the private beach (and the grassy path leading to it, past an old orchard full of birds when I was there), the walking trails through the shady woods/over a stream, and the Summit which has a panoramic view of Penobscot Bay and the islands. I bet it will be gorgeous in the fall. Lots of local places to explore: shops and galleries in Camden, also great restaurants and lobster shacks. Best of all—we paid just $175 a night for a cabin to ourselves.

Summer Hotel Love: The Claremont

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 41 Tunnel Road [map], Berkeley, CA, United States, 94705
June 19, 2006 at 5:29 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

As we mentioned last week, we will be sharing all of your hotel stories and photos from your travels this summer, starting with our brief trip to the Claremont Resort and Spa in Berkeley, California.

The hotel initially opened in the early 1900s but has undergone extensive renovations in recent years. Celebs galore have stayed at this place, particularly in the late 60s and 70s, and photos line the hotel's lobby documenting its famous guests.

Today, the hotel serves a delicious breakfast in the Jordan's restaurant, which offers up prime views of San Francisco in the distance.

However, as with most old hotels, the Claremont is an enjoyable place to mosey through and wonder what things were like 100 years ago, but staying there might mean a musty, antiquated room.
