7 Unlucky Hotels That Just Can't Catch A Break

March 14, 2013 at 10:16 AM | by | Comments (0)

In honor of St Patrick's Day coming up this Sunday, we thought we'd take a look back at a few hotels that just can't seem to catch a break. If any leprechauns are reading this right now, take note. You've got your work cut out for you!

#7: Le Parker Meridien.

We thought it was bad enough when a random construction accident managed to flood the entire Knave Cafe at LPM. But it turned out the hotel had more bad luck coming, when Hurricane Sandy tore through Manhattan, toppling a nearby crane, and causing Le Parker Meridien to be evacuated. Here's to a cheerier 2013.

#6: JW Marriott Chicago.

The JW Marriott Chicago made plenty of headlines (though not the good kind) this past fall when an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease claimed the lives of three guests who stayed there over the sumer. The Chicago Dept of Public Health reported that the hotel "fully cooperated with the ongoing investigation," and concluded by saying there was no further health threat at the hotel. Still, we're probably going to lay off those hot tub parties for a while.

#5: Revel Resort.

This $2.6 billion resort was supposed to be the saving grace of Atlantic City, but after barely a year of being open, it announced it was planning to file for bankruptcy. Ouch! Hurricane Sandy couldn't have helped things either. We feel like they need a lucky charm or something to bring them back from the dark side, but then again, if a four-night Beyonce run during opening weekend didn't manage to do it, we're not sure what will.

Four more unlucky hotels after the jump!

If you're still debating how to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, consider booking a room this weekend at the newly renovated Boston Marriott Long Wharf.

Not only is the hotel in Boston, home to the Celtics and many, many, many other Irish folks, the hotel is holding a special Shamrocks for Stays promotion this weekend which will give seven lucky guests a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Er, we mean, a free stay!

The lucky guests checking in either tomorrow (March 16) or on Saturday (March 17) who find a special shamrock surprise will receive a complimentary overnight return stay and an actual pot of gold. Ok, actually it's just chocolate.

But even if you don't win a return stay, you'll still be in the heart of the action this weekend on State Street and the hotel's on-site Waterline restaurant will even give you the recipe for their gooey Grafton Cheddar Ale dip, which is a different kind of pot of gold.

Rates for this weekend are going for $349 a night.

It's not easy to find a last-minute hotel along the route of New York City's famous St. Patrick's Day Parade. The Irish (and wannabes) are serious about the parade and festivities, filling all of the nearby hotels to make it easy to drunkenly stumble home after a nonstop party.

But for you procrastinators, the Holiday Inn Express New York Midtown, right off the Fifth Avenue parade route, still has rooms available on the holiday starting at $344 a night.

St Patrick's Day in Dublin Is Way More Affordable Than You'd Think

The Dylan: nice beds, no dubious rockers. We could deal with that

Well oi’ll be damned (say that in an Irish accent, it might make more sense). It’s St Paddy’s Day coming up (17 March) and if you want to go ultra-authentico and spend it in Dublin, you’d better get your planning skates on.

But here’s the good news – pricewise, places seem to be less than extortionate, considering Dublin is an extortionate city, even on the off season. We just checked out two of Dublin’s poshest hotels: the Clarence, which is owned by Bono and his greasy chums, and the Dylan, which is so sleek it has no need of dodge celeb booking.

The Clarence has double rooms starting at €189 ($256/£168), and the Dylan’s even cheaper at €179 ($243/£159). If you don’t want to travel on a hangover, it even has a stay two nights, get one free package going down at the moment. Who’da thunk it? That leaves plenty of euros left to spend down Temple Bar.

The Five Best Hotels for NYC's St. Patrick's Day Parade

February 24, 2010 at 2:09 PM | by | Comment (1)

Note: Not all hotels will look as charming as this photo but it depends on how many green beers you have. It's ok. Beer goggles happen to the best of us.

Now that Valentine’s Day is dispensed with, hotels are tearing down the pink and putting up the green. Aye, St. Patrick’s Day is the next big chance for hotels to offer holiday packages, and house lots of drunk people wearing “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” T-shirts and leprechaun hats. New York City is, of course, home to one of the biggest public celebrations of St. Pat’s Day and, after a day spent inside a glass of Guinness, most revelers will need a hotel room.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the highlight of the day (unless you’re a Midtown office worker), starting at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue at 11 a.m., and finishing up at 86th Street around 4:30 p.m. There are plenty of ritzy hotels along the route (The Peninsula, The Pierre, and The Plaza, just to name a few), but somehow we feel you’ll be more at home at one of these five spots after your day at the parade or at the pub.
