Reese and Ryan May Have Called It Quits at the Soho Grand

Of course, a marriage like that of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe doesn't simply end overnight. These types of breakups tend to be the result of years of festering anger at the other spouse's behavior (he likes to party too much and was wasted at the Oscar awards earlier this year; she is apparently a Type-A anal type) that finally burst open, unleashing all sorts of ugliness.

But Roger Friedman of Fox News gossip thinks he may have witnessed the final moments of the couple's marriage while at an after-premiere party for Ryan's new movie, "Flags of Our Fathers" at Manhattan's Soho Grand.

The couple went out on the roof terrace and had a knock-down, drag-out fight. It looked like something from "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

My line of vision was partially blocked by a big exhaust pipe, so at different times during the fight they were obscured. But then Ryan would appear, disgusted, on one side of it, and Reese on the other. Suddenly, Reese stormed back inside, crossed past me and headed for the elevator. Ryan followed in hot pursuit. Thus, their security guards assigned for the night went running after them, thinking that they were leaving.

Friedman went on to say that the pair returned to the party, mostly to make nice in front of Ryan's family.

We are not sure if the Soho Grand is the place for celebrities to be these days.  A brown-shirted actor may have been spied doing lines at the bar, a steam heater may have exploded on a director and now marital hell may have reached a boil at the penthouse suite.

Maybe they need to think about incorporating some feng shui into their newly designed rooms?

Soho Grand Hotel: Revisiting Post Renovations

The above photo was taken from room 633 at New York's Soho Grand Hotel, where we stayed earlier this week.

Last year, after our brief visit to the Soho Grand, we gave the hotel a list of unsolicited suggestions. Soho Grand was cool enough to reply to us, and a year later, we decide to visit the Soho Grand to see if she did indeed stay classy.

What did we find? Well, last year we had to pay $400 for our mid-week one night stay, and this year? Over $500. The price came as no real shock, as $500 hotel stays in downtown New York are run-of-the-mill this fall--yeah, depressing we know.

Rates aside, what we were really interested in was the Soho Grand's follow through concerning renovations.

After the jump take a look at last year's suggestions, along with this year's takes and more photos.

NYC Downtown Hotel Map :: Soho Grand

The Soho Grand opened up way back in 1996 around the time dowtown NYC was starting to become cool again, making it the old maid on our downtown map. However, despite age and celebrity guests the hotel manages to stay atop of the game.

Room Rules
There's 363 rooms in this hotel for you to choose from, all sporting "natural materials" of wood, clay, canvas, and leather. But despite the earthy decore the rooms are full of hi-tech amenities like flat-screen TVs, digital cable, iPods, and Bose Sound Docks along with luxury toiletries from Malin+Goetz, Frette linens, a gourmet mini-bar and a pet goldfish upon request. And after 10 years, the hotel is starting to renovate some rooms, although we haven't seen one yet.

As for space in this place, the smallest room, the queen superior has only 230-square-feet to offer and only a walk-in shower no bathtub. The penthouse lofts on the other hand offer two bedrooms and 1,200 sq ft terraces.

Only in NYC Amenity or Service
The hotel offers its guests the use of high-sport Electra bicycles (complimentary!) to get around town during the "warm spring", summer and fall months.

Map-Making Moment
While making the list as one of the best NYC hotels to have an affair was map-worthy, the TV actor doing lines at the bar is by far the more important moment.

Hotel Bar vs. Hotel Restaurant
The Grand Bar & Lounge serves up American fare and cocktails and is a pretty standard boutique hotel bar. However, The Gallery is a "more intimate" place to wine and dine with art works by the city's avant-garde artists and photographers. Yet, if The Yard, the hotel's spring/summer outdoor bar were open year-round we have a feeling this place would beat out both the Grand Bar and Gallery.

Who you are most likely to see in the lobby:
Ad execs, media workers, and Web 2.0 kids using their VC's credit card.

Subway Stop:
