Ski season is in full swing: there are deals to be had, expectations to be met, and of course, hotels to be explored. In Europe, the swish Swiss resort of Verbier has been grabbing a lot of headlines, not least among which for the inevitably loud arrival of W’s first ski resort (and unsurprisingly, it has managed to find a rather in-your-face spot in town that makes it impossible to miss).

But to think that that would be all would be a mistake. To find out for ourselves, we undertook what turned out to be a rather epic journey to Verbier, one that involved nearly every possible mode of transportation as we journeyed across Switzerland over the course of a day of mishaps, including an unplanned ski gondola to make it over the finish line at 1,500m (4,900 feet) altitude and our room at the less-than-a-year-old Hotel Cordée des Alpes.

5 Amenities We Look for in a Ski Hotel

December 11, 2013 at 12:24 PM | by | ()

True, sometimes you need to pack three friends and all your gear into a budget hotel to make ski trips feasible. With gear rentals, lift tickets, and apres beer prices by no means on the cheap end of the scale, cutting costs on lodging is often the only option. But, if you've been saving your pennies and plan on treating yourself right, here are five things you should look for in a hotel that will make your trip that much more pleasant:

Slope-Side Hot Tub/Heated Pool

File this one under "OBVIOUS" and "OF COURSE."

Ski Concierge

One of the most inconvenient aspects of skiing is lugging around all the gear. Hotel rooms are small enough already - no reason to clog up your corners with boots and poles. Look for a hotel that has a ski shop on-site or a ski concierge, an in-house, full-service team that stores your skis overnight, usually on the ground level right where you come off the slopes. Some hotels that are not located slope-side will partner with local shops to provide guests with ski storage, so be sure to inquire before booking. Last thing you want after a day on the mountain is to be stuffing your skis into an elevator.

Want First Tracks on Fresh Powder? Breck Hotels Open Lifts Early for Guests Every Friday Morning

Where: Summit County, Colorado, United States
December 10, 2013 at 1:11 PM | by | ()

Although it doesn't feel like it to us (this contributor is currently in Mexico!), ski season is officially in full swing in the States, with snow falling across the country and temperatures down below freezing in mountain towns out west. While the initial shock of the winter season takes some time to embrace, we know you're excited to hit the slopes.

With the calender now on December, ski deals and packages are really beginning to flood out. Hotels offer a variety of options, including ski and stay deals, discounts on rentals, and packages for both beginners and adrenaline seekers, and we'll dish on the best ones later this week so you can get to booking your trip for 2014.

We see many offers that allow you to save money, but we get most excited about hotels that provide unique perks and experiences for their guests. For example, we're digging Breckenridge Ski Resort's “First Tracks Fridays” program that begins this Friday (Dec 13th), which allows guests staying at any of the mountain's official lodging properties to get on-mountain access one hour before the resort opens to the public every Friday morning throughout the season.

W Verbier Switzerland Nearly Ready For December Debut

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Rue de Medran 70, Verbier, Switzerland, 1936
August 26, 2013 at 3:27 PM | by | ()

This December, W Hotels will debut their first ski resort, the W Verbier, in the heart of the Swiss Alps and two hours from the Geneva airport.

Verbier is considered one of the best ski destinations in Europe and equally famous for its party scene, so it's a fitting location for the party-centric W brand.

The property will be made up of a 123-room hotel as well as 15 full-service private residences located adjacent to the four housing chalets on the Place Blanche main square, conveniently located next to the main gondola. This means direct, ski-in, ski-out access to slopes like the 3, 330 meter Mont-Fort and 400 km of ski runs.

Also, each room includes a fireplace as well as a private balcony--what is sure to be a killer combo.

This is What $70,000 Per Room Looks Like at The Wyoming Inn

Go To The Hotel's Web

August 12, 2013 at 9:21 AM | by | ()

If you had $70,000 to put into a room, how would you spend it?

We see million-dollar renovation figures thrown around all the time by properties that are undergoing renovations, however it’s not very often that we look at the numbers on a cost per room basis. No doubt, lots of money goes into each and every hotel revamp, but to hear that $70,000 went into each room at the Wyoming Inn really got our attention.

$70,000 per room? That’s a lot of coin, especially when you think about it all being put into a room that is a few hundred square feet.

We're bringing you a double-dose of QT Hotel news this week, because we couldn't resist the announcement of a new ski resort in Australia. Huh? Australian ski resort? Surely, we meant Austria? Nope! It's true, the sunburned land Down Under actually has some areas that get snow and with the new QT Falls Creek, now's the perfect time to head down to the slopes.

The mastermind hotel designers have taken over the perfect après–ski location situated in the mountainous Great Dividing Range in South Eastern Australia. Just over four hours drive from Melbourne, QT's newest outpost, which was previously Quay West Falls Creek, has 63 alpine one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments that'll have the quirky touch we've come to expect from the brand. Most of the apartments will have private balcony hot-tubs but all will have uninterrupted views of the snow-capped peaks surrounding the resort.

Fondue And A Private Cinema At the New Alpina Gstaad

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Alpinastrasse 23, Gstaad, Switzerland, 3780
February 15, 2013 at 5:52 PM | by | ()

Ah, Gstaad. Maybe you too have fond memories of swooshing down the mountainside, hiking in the hills, sipping on Glühwein or hot chocolate, and eating fresh raclette cheese. It’s all good. But now, it's even better because for the first time in about 100 years, there’s a new luxe hotel opening: The Alpina Gstaad.

This 56-room Preferred Hotel is a real beauty -- think big stone fireplaces, pine interiors, cozy nooks, timber peaked ceilings and spectacular views of the Alps. No two rooms are exactly alike and, although beautifully-designed, also have plenty of quirk (just wait until you see the cowbell bedside lamps!)

Vermont's Topnotch Offers Reduced Rate During Renovations

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 4000 Mountain Road [map], Stowe, Vermont, United States, 05672
January 23, 2013 at 9:38 AM | by | ()

Topnotch Resort at Stowe Mountain in Vermont is undergoing a face lift this ski season, redoing the lobby to provide views of Mt. Mansfield (Vermont's highest peak). The construction will also result in updated guest rooms and a new restaurant.

Despite the work being done on property, the resort is still open for business as usual (FYI there are no longer cranes on property as the project has entered "phase two"). The resort is offering a reduced rate during the revamp , a gesture we can appreciate. The discounted "Renaissance Rate" starts at $200 per night. Normal rates begin at $250. So, you're basically saving the cost of a tank of gas. Pretty decent.

Many hotels remain open during renovations, but with something so central as the lobby under the knife, we wondered how it might affect a guest's experience. So we did some digging around to see what people were saying.

Lake Tahoe's New Drug Den-Turned-Ski Hotel Is Pretty Rad

January 3, 2013 at 12:51 PM | by | ()

After Euclid's powdery onslaught trapped us in an 6-hour traffic jam en route to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area this Christmas, we sought refuge at the ski mecca's newest piste-worthy pad, Basecamp Hotel.

Hey, if it's good enough for the NYTimes, it's good enough for us -- snowstorm or no!

Ski, Then OD On Free Fancy S'mores At Park Hyatt Beaver Creek

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 136 E Thomas Place [map], Avon, CO, United States, 81620
December 20, 2012 at 1:55 PM | by | ()

Ski at Beaver Creek Mountain Resort in Colorado, and it's hard to deny there's any hotel better situated than the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek. Other Beaver Creek ski lodges and hotels can promise "ski in ski out" access, but none have Park Hyatt's backyard right at the base of the mountain, not to mention a front yard right in Beaver Creek Village.

You might expect uber exclusiveness given the hotels pristine location, but we recently discovered something unexpectedly communal about Park Hyatt Beaver Creek; free gourmet s'mores.

It was about 4 pm and we were coming in from our last run as the slopes were closing for the day. The sun was already on the move to set and we couldn't help but to notice the glowing fire pits at the Park Hyatt, just steps away from the Buckaroo Gondola. Why not wander over? It was far too picturesque and inviting to pass up.
