If Thanksgiving is the one time of year when NYC's Herald Square can actually become relevant again (Macy's parade, hello?), then it was with good foresight that Marriott waited until this week to announce their new midtown Courtyard property. The worldwide hotel brand will plant a new Courtyard by Marriott Herald Square inside the former Atlantic Bank of New York Building, on the corner of 35th Street and Sixth Avenue.
This news also coincides (then again, in this business, coincidences don't really exist) with Macy's announcement last Tuesday that the flagship Herald Square store will be receiving a $400 million makeover.
Stressed this ghastly hump day? Shop it out. And, if you’re the type to feel guilty at the thought, Affinia Chicago has prepared a pretty decent excuse.
Book its new Shop ‘Til You Drop package and they’ll hand you a $50 gift card valid at the 900 North Michigan Shops (of which you’ll have 70 to choose from, including Bloomingdale’s, L’Occitane, Gucci and J Crew – something for all pockets).
In addition, you’ll get two cocktails at either C-House (the restaurant) or C-View (the rooftop bar), $25 credit for a SPAffinia in-room massage or pedicure, a free makeup consultation at Mario Tricoci to bring your face into line with your new clothes, and a 900 North Michigan Shops gift bag including a mug, wallet and yet more offers.
Just as well they’re also throwing in parking, because you’ll be needing your car to cart all your purchases home.
But, apart from assuaging your spendthrift conscience, is it a deal? Well, the package costs from $229, although the cheapest we could find it going for in March is $239. However, on the days that it costs $239, you can score a regular room for $139. Is the package worth paying an extra $100 for? Depends on whether you really want that makeup consultation and are bringing a car (valet is normally a whopping $49).

What are you doing this Friday night, September 10? If you're in New York City, whether you want to or not you will probably get swept up in some of the Fashion's Night Out hoopla, and no hotel is doing it bigger than the good old Ace Hotel New York. Together with the trendsetting hipster haven Opening Ceremony, which recently opened a brand store at The Ace, the hotel will turn its moody lobby into a French flea market for one night only.
Inspired by the "famous Parisian market Les Puces de Saint-Ouen," the Ace's market will bring limited-edition goods from some of OC's favorite designers into the space with their own flea market booths: "In keeping with our USA vs. France country collaboration, the 'puces' will have a distinctly Frenchie flair! Get ready for goodies and exclusivities from agnès b., Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Ladurée, Patrik Ervell, Colette, Proenza Schouler, and many more."

Here's what you'll get:
