A Closer Look At Sean MacPherson's Pants...And Two New NYC Hotels
What is hot NYC hotelier Sean MacPherson up to these days, aside from wearing army surplus khakis and grilling fish over an open fire? Not too much else, actually.
A NY TImes "What I Wore" column over the weekend profiled MacPherson, focusing specifically on his Hamptons chic attire—yet we managed to scrounge up a few hotel-related tidbits along the way.
MacPherson mentions how he normally spends "all day every Wednesday at my two current hotel construction sites," which immediately brought up two questions in our mind: first, are these places in Manhattan, or Long Island? The article seems to imply that MacPherson is speaking about New York City, but it's never explicitly stated. And second, are these two brand new projects? Or continuations of properties we already knew about?
Time to put our thinking caps on.

Jack Kerouac Would Approve This New Greenwich Village Hotel
In New York's Greenwich Village, right above Washington Square Park, there exists a building known as the Marlton House—formerly an SRO, it was converted in 1987 into dormitories for students at Parsons The New School for Design. And now, thanks to Sean MacPherson and Richard Born, it's becoming a hotel again.
What's interesting about the building is its history of attracting notable writers, artists and actors as guests—Jack Kerouac, Edna St. VIncent Milay, Maggie Smith and John Lithgow have all stayed here.

In looking at our hot hotelier coverage from the past year, just three names consistently come up--Andre Balazs, Ian Schrager and Steve Wynn, who is really a casino mogul than a hotelier.
Where have all the hoteliers gone? Have bigger hotel brands finally pushed out the hip, cool, trendsetting, modelizing, jetsetting hotelier? That's what it seems like.
Just looking at six new hotels that are opening/have opened in NYC recently, four of them are from larger hotel brands (namely Starwood.) And in the coming years, both Hyatt Hotels and Hotel Indigo plan on saturating Manhattan with their brand.
With our usual staple of hoteliers just kicking back and relaxing (see below), we were hard pressed to find someone actively expanding his or her hotel collection. Then we remembered:
The Soho House Hotels, the members-only clubs with hotel rooms attached for both members and non-members alike.

If You Stay At The Jane, Don't Expect to Have a Night in the Ballroom
Off limits come night time if you’re a hotel guest
As you may have gathered from our review yesterday, we didn’t exactly dig our stay at The Jane NYC. But what we lacked as regards a clean room and a pleasant environment, we told ourselves, we were gaining in street cred, as staying there would surely get us entry into the fabled Ballroom, which reopened in May.
What were we thinking? Of course they’re not going to let plebs who pay $89 for a room into One Of The Most Exclusive Spaces In Manhattan. We would ruin the hipster vibe if we dared enter, smelling of The Jane.
We got in around midnight on Thursday night and could hear the choons as we walked up the staircase. We noted the hipsters standing outside smoking and jumping in taxis and loafing around in the lobby looking way too cool for school. And we wanted to join them (actually we kinda needed a drink to persuade us to return to that room, but anyways).

The Jane Ballroom Is Back Open, This Time 'Small and Friendly'
Forget the Costume Institute Met Ball, last night there was big news in hotel nightlife land. Those rumors were right—The Jane Hotel's Ballroom quietly reopened its well-guarded doors yesterday.
But unlike last fall when its late-night carousing prompted neighbors to complain, the new Jane Ballroom is "gentle", according to the folks at Eater NY, who were in the house to see what's changed ...

The Jane Hotel Ballroom Could Open Again Very Soon (But Will You Be Invited?)
The infamous party ballroom at the Jane Hotel has been closed since last October when neighbors used social media (along with traditional complaint methods) to draw attention to the debauchery going on inside (loud music, smoking, too many taxis waiting on the street.) And while there have been reports before saying that the ballroom was ready to reopen, Gothamist says this time could be for reals.
he NY Times is reporting that after the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement shuttered the joint last fall, the Department of Buildings and mayoral officials have confirmed that the hotel has been granted a temporary certificate of occupancy which went into effect this week. Their place of assembly permit has also been approved.

Bowery Goes Beach: Sean MacPherson Snaps Up a Montauk Hotel
Where do you go once you've made a name for yourself putting hotels in previously dubious areas or buildings and making them the hippest spots in Manhattan? Why, it's obvious: The Hamptons. Or in the case of Sean MacPherson, he of The Bowery, The Jane, and The Maritime Hotel fame, you head to Montauk.
That's where our favorite J.Crew modeling, Gossip Girl-cameo-ing hotelier just bought his latest property, The Crow's Nest Restaurant and Inn. (A word of warning before you click on the website—prepare for the sounds of seagulls and breaking waves.)

Sean MacPherson Moves On From 'Gossip Girl'; Tries Modeling Instead
"Sometimes...when I get real nervous..."
It looks like a cameo on Gossip Girl wasn't enough for Sean MacPherson. The Bowery Hotel's Twitter tipped us off to the spread that Sean Mac did for the J. Crew Catalog. J. Crew, people. Clothes you can buy off the rack! How bourgeois!
The feature is available online here and it features Sean looking tough in a leather jacket and answering questions about his life. We learn how he likes his martinis (extra dry with three olives) and that he always carries his passport and a credit card wherever he goes. (Let's hope he has better passport-handling skills than Kristen Stewart.)
We also learn this incredibly helpful advice on how to get into a hot spot. "Start your own." Hmmm...should Andre Balazs be concerned or no?

Chuck Bass Takes On Sean MacPherson on 'Gossip Girl'
We know that Sean Macpherson was traveling in Bhuktan last week but we sincerely hope he made it back stateside to watch himself on the last night's episode of "Gossip Girl."
In the episode, Sean played himself--a New York City hotelier--who Chuck Bass approaches with his nightclub plans (and tries to retrieve a Patrick McMullan photo of Sean.) Interestingly, Sean's hotel on the show was The Empire Hotel but we all know that he's the man behind The Bowery, The Maritime, The Lafayette House and The Jane Hotel as well as the restaurant, the Waverly Inn.
In the end, Chuck Bass thought, why own a nightclub in a hotel when you could buy the whole hotel? And that's exactly what plenty of young men with too much money probably did during the heyday of the hotel industry, guest services be damned. Seriously, Chuck Bass a hotelier? Then again, he does have the love and devotion of Blair Waldorf. We'll have to see how this turns out.

The Jane Hotel Now Facing Neighborhood Angst
As if dealing with grumpy tenants wasn't enough, The Jane Hotel finds itself fighting another battle with folks who aren't too happy about its presence---the neighbors.
A blog and a Twitter feed called Nightmare on Jane Street have been setup to monitor/publicize all the crowds, events, and noise levels coming out of the Ballroom at the Jane Hotel. Example:
1:15 AM Update: Once again a crowd of over 100 people has congregated in front of the Jane Hotel hoping to get in with dozens more loitering in front of 99, 111 and 130 Jane. We counted six hotel employees in orange jackets lining the block from end to end attempting to manage the taxis–oddly, this doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on the noise.

Libyan Dictator Might Be Ruling Over NY's Pierre Hotel Next Week
We should have known that a picky dictator only picks the best hotels, regardless of availability of first-floor suites. We guess Libyan dictator Moammar al-Qaddafi doesn't read HotelChatter (thank god), because he sure didn't read our Top Three Recommendations for him during his stay in New York for his meeting with the good old United Nations.
Instead, Luxist did some sniffing around in the news to discover that suites have been reserved in Moammar and company's names at several properties not on our list, like The Pierre, The Plaza, and The Hilton. The current favorite seems to be The Pierre, whose rooms begin at $820 a night and have the Taj Pierre Grand suites, which "can accommodate up to six connecting bedrooms under just one key and have landscaped terraces suitable for large-scale entertaining."
