The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. But of course, any hotel can assemble a fake tree, put on some lights and declare themselves "festive." Which is why we're looking at hotels that are really going ALL OUT. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!
With a name like The Grand America Hotel, you can be sure the hotel is going to go all out for the holidays. And indeed the five diamond hotel in Salt Lake City has done just that.
For starters, the hotel itself is lit up with red and green Christmas lights (Thankfully, it's on the exterior of the building and not something that they string up on every guest room window) Then outside in their 2 1/2 acre courtyard, there's a giant Christmas tree that's surrounded by lighted trees and bushes (pretty much everything has some lights strung on it.) Inside, there's a giant Victorian gingerbread house while the Shops at The Grand have created old-school retail window designs for guests to admire. (We especially love the Paint Department.)

So, you thought back-to-school time didn’t apply to you? Well, these kind of classes are the ones you won’t be itching to ditch. Throughout September and October Kimpton Hotel chefs will be teaching guests an important skill—how to use the kitchen knife. The bonus: you’ll eat, drink, and learn at the same time.
“Cut” is part of the company's “Behind the Apron..Dishing with Kimpton Chefs” series. And in this segment, you’ll learn what every budding chef wants to know—the art of slicing and dicing. Plus that all-too important practical information everyone seems to want to know will be discussed as well: how to select and care for a good knife.
Those who consider themselves serious gourmands will enjoy a few inside tips and tricks and favorite tools through Q&A sessions, videos and more. They’ll even share a recipe or two for you try back home.
We are suckers for a room with a killer view. We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.
We had an anti-view in Denver today a destination where one might expect to see mountains off in the distance (though Denver, we know, is pretty flat) but looking at this view from a room at the Grand America sort of makes up for it.
This downtown Salt Lake City hotel has a whopping 775 guestrooms, lots of them with killer Rocky Mountain Views like this one. The place is a 5-diamond property but still keeps it real with free in-room WiFi. It's got a massive spa, a salon, boasts an impressive list of green initiatives, and, in the winter, offers ski-for-free packages (staying two consecutive nights earns you two Snowbasin lift tickets).
Rates here start around $229, with options to add luxe goodies like afternoon tea, bouquets of flowers, or a spa sampler for additional fees.
