For The Biggest Best Western, Head East

The "world's biggest hotel family" just got a little bigger. The Phoenix, Arizona-based mega franchise recently opened Best Western Vega Hotel & Convention Centre in Russia—the largest Best Western so far, out of 4,000 hotels worldwide in 95 countries.
Comprised of 970 rooms, the hotel was actually built for the 1980 summer olympics, but got remodeled in 2007. Certainly this will provide a welcome low-budget alternative to the extravagances of certain other Moscow hotels. But if we remember correctly, Holiday Inn was also planning to open their largest hotel in Moscow too. Oh, the indecision.

How Do You Say 'Whatever Whenever' in Russian?

OK, there’s one week left of 2009—time to start planning your hotel jaunts for 2010! As we reported the other day, W Hotels has lots going on in the New Year, with a nice, fresh slate of properties opening up around the world. Two we’re most intrigued by are the W St. Petersburg and the W Retreat & Spa Bali—both scheduled to open in September.
The new hotels are the first W properties in their respective countries, and promise exotic yet vastly different experiences. Your room at the W St. Petersburg might have a view of St. Isaac’s Cathedral or the Winter Palace, while at the W Retreat & Spa Bali you’ll be able to indulge in a massage while surrounded by lush banana palms.

Starwood Challenges Hilton's World Domination Plans

Not content to let Hilton have all the world-dominating fun, Starwood plans to open a W Hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia by summer of 2008. Looks like the motto is ever-eastward, now that the chain's two Middle East outposts are underway. What should we expect from the first Russian W?
The W St. Petersburg is centrally located south of the Neva River in the historic centre of St. Petersburg, with many of the city's cathedrals, museums and palaces accessible by foot. The hotel will be located on Voznesensky Prospect, between St. Isaac's Square and the Admiralty, just a stone's throw from the lavish Winter Palace which houses the world famous Hermitage Museum. From their rooms, hotel guests will enjoy spectacular views of the landmark gold-domed St. Isaac's Cathedral.
Current plans call for the hotel to have about 135 rooms and the W's 24-hour concierge service. Maybe that concierge could point us to some free in-room WiFi?
