Nearly three years after it launched, hotel booking site Room 77 has achieved a major milestone, and at the same time, has pretty much closed up shop by scoring a licensing deal with Google.
The all-powerful search engine is now using Room 77's extensive hotel database which includes details on specific rooms at hotels, including the size, the layout and even the amenities inside. The goal here is obviously for Google to snap up a larger share of the $450 billion that people around the world spend on travel & tourism in a single year (last year to be exact, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council.)
But according to Skift, this means that Room 77 has somewhat given up trying to be a player in the metasearch realm, with several of its engineers transferring over to Google to work on the licensing deal.
The hotel check-in process can vary wildly from hotel to hotel and day to day. But now, CheckMate is hoping to streamline the process every single time.
Here's how it works: guests download the (free) CheckMate app to their phones. They need to set up a CheckMate profile with their name and email and if they want, a profile photo. Next they can sync up their hotel reservations through Gmail or by forwarding to CheckMate@CheckMate.io.
Then when they are ready to head to their hotel, the CheckMate app will communicate with the hotel to see if the room is ready. The app will also allow guests to or hotels to request room preferences from the hotel, receive last-minute upgrade offers, enter in their loyalty numbers and most importantly, receive alerts as to whether or not their room is ready. Most importantly, if all systems are a go, the guest can bypass long check-in lines at the front desk, get their room key and head up to hotel room sweet hotel room.

We're doing our best to keep up with the ever-shifting landscape of hotel booking sites, but there's certainly been a lot to keep track of! The latest: Room 77, which made a name for itself by being able to match up guests with the exact room they want, is now allowing guests to earn loyalty points from bookings made through Room 77. In other words, you no longer have to choose between the convenience of window-shopping for hotel rooms and the satisfaction of using the hotel's loyalty program.
This harks back to a discussion topic we started in 2010 about whether it's possible to earn loyalty points for rooms gotten through blind booking sites like Hotwire and Priceline. The line was pretty blurry back then, as we're sure it still is now, but this looks like a sign that more hotels are giving in. What's more, all the friendly competition going on between the hotel booking sites right now means that guests are the ones who cash in. Who said we can't have our cake and earn points for eating it too?
We've had success before with Room 77. Back in May, we took their advice to stay on the twenty-second floor of the Eventi Hotel, and definitely had a positive experience. But as much information as we were able to glean, we still had to make our physical reservation elsewhere.
Now, guests who use Room 77's profiling technology can simultaneously pull up rates and book the room right there on the same screen. Room 77 announced today that its 500,000 browsable rooms can all be booked directly through the site, and will even allow guests to request which rooms they want to stay in through a digital Room Concierge.
Hotel room database Room 77 just added three new cities' worth of hotels to its roster: Minneapolis, Palm Springs and Phoenix/Scottsdale.
It brings Room 77's database tally to 500,000 rooms in 24 cities. The site, which launched in February, gives you the lowdown on a particular room, including its size, layout, amenities and views before you check in.
If you ever stayed in a great hotel but got stuck in a room with a lousy view or near a noisy elevator, there's now a way to avoid those dud digs. Unlike sites like TripAdvisor that focus on the hotel in general, new website Room 77, which launches today, offers a hotel room database and search engine for three-star-and-up properties.
Founder Brad Gerstner was staying at a Caribbean hotel and got room envy when he saw another amazing spot in the resort. He put its number—77—in his BlackBerry. He started to add his favorite rooms to the list, and his friends would ask for it when they'd go on trips. Room 77 was born.
