While the trend in hotel restaurants seems to be shifting towards unique concepts to feed the hunger for everything hyper-local and hyper-specific, we remain fans of certain well-known restaurant brands, including the BLT Steak and wider BLT family of eateries.
Which means we should start looking at flights to Aruba, where a new BLT Steak is set to open at the Ritz-Carlton Aruba.
The place hasn’t even been open ten years, but it’s already time to get some work done. They were the first property in town to score an AAA Five Diamond rating, so we guess they don’t want to just rest on their laurels. All in all they will be spending $8 million to upgrade and improve the place, as they work with the architecture and design group over at Streetsense.

Hello Thursday! Time for a quick roundup of news from around the world, because hotels never sleep. We’ve got Shanghai, Mumbai, Uruguay, and a few places in between. Onwards!
Rocco Forte Shanghai: Following the first small steps on the road to significant expansion taken in Jeddah, here is the confirmation that Shanghai (above) will follow in 2018. The first Rocco Forte hotel in China is also the first in Asia Pacific altogether, and part of the “Longhua International Aviation Service Centre, a new urban complex in Shanghai’s Xuhui Riverside area known as West Bund”. There is no official name yet, but it will be on the top 15 floors of a high-rise at 280 rooms and suites.

The third Ritz-Carlton Reserve (that would be Mandapa, on Bali) is only a few months away from opening, and we know about resorts planned for Los Cabos (Mexico), Pearl Island (Panama), Tamuda Bay (Morocco) and Muscat (Oman). But not only did we find a whole lot of renderings of the Moroccan resort, which we will get to in a second, this page seems to suggest a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is on its way to the Maldives, too.
Described as a “self-contained island resort” on the island of Ekulhivari, there will be 35 water villas and 55 beach villas, keeping the total count nicely in the double digits. Above renderings of the water villas, built as is the Maldives tradition on stilts over the ocean. We see daybeds and plunge pools on the terraces and sea views from everywhere inside the villa. A few more impressions below.
One hotel in particular that probably doesn’t need a re-do but is getting one anyway is The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia, slated to start upgrades this fall which will be completed in spring 2016.

Every month, we tell you which hotel openings you need to know about (and which, inevitably, miss their deadlines). While we have a healthy list of arrivals around the world, there are a few places that are either consistently popular or having a bit of a hotel moment, so “new hotels for…” gives you a rundown of the openings you will want to know about for a particular destination.
Oh, Bali. Perennially popular you may have been indeed, but Julia Roberts cycling magically sweat-free through rice paddies must have really kicked it up a notch. Overcrowding be damned, the list of hotels we can think of that will come to your shores in the next five years (all to “unspoiled” and “pristine” corners, of course) easily runs up to the fingers on both our hands (and that’s with a bit of doubling up as you’ll find out). Here are ten hotels coming to the Island of the Gods:
It’s nearly a year ago that we last looked at a rendering of The Nile Ritz-Carlton, along with the not completely unexpected news that its opening would be moved back to 2015. That’s a solid six years after it was reflagged and began its extensive renovation, with now finally a formal announcement of a “late summer” arrival and an actual exterior photo.
The hotel will have 331 rooms, “reminiscent of the timeless style of Ritz-Carlton properties around the globe whilst being anchored in the flavours and traditions of Egypt”. We don’t have any visuals to go with that yet, but we’ll hazard a guess in saying it will be fairly traditional. Outside, there is an Olympic-sized pool with private cabanas, and the spa has a terrace for sunset yoga sessions overlooking the river. Restaurants will serve everything from Arabian to Continental and Italian food. The hotel’s website is still surprisingly spare, and reservations aren’t open yet, so more is to come.

Bali continues to be a hot destination not just for adventurous travelers, but also luxury hotels.
Last week we learned that Langham Hotels will be opening their first Langham Place resort on a clifftop in Ungasan-Uluwatu area. Today, Ritz-Carlton Hotels has announced that their equally impressive Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, the third in the brand's ultra-exclusive collection, will open in September of this year in Ubud.
Indeed, reservations are live on the hotel's website, starting at around $670 a night for a Reserve Suite, one of the largest entry-level suites in Ubud at around 1,000-sq.ft., with views of the rain forest and rice paddies. But this is just the starting room category for Mandapa. Accommodations also include one, two and three-bedroom villas, most with private pools. (There are 35 suites and 25 private pool villas in total.)
Here's what else is expected at the Mandapa:

HOTEL TOMO TO TURN INTO HOTEL BUCHANAN, A KIMPTON HOTEL: Back in September, we told you how the Japanimation-themed Hotel Tomo in San Francisco would turn into a Kimpton Hotel but we had no idea the place would get a full-on rebranding. It will now open in June as the Hotel Buchanan, and it looks completely different. Gone is all the kitschy decor, replaced with more masculine yet stylish furniture and amenities. The only nod to the hotel's former history is a light-weight, Shibori-print Kimono, which will be placed in the guestrooms instead of the usual Kimpton animal print robes. No exact opening date is set but we'll be sure to let you know when we have it.

· RITZ-CARLTON PHOENIX TO BECOME AN AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION HOTEL: There's one less Ritz-y place to stay in Phoenix as the Ritz-Carlton there will be rebranded into an Autograph Collection Hotel, run by Destination Hotels. Per this press release, the property will close in July and will reopen in early 2016 as an Autograph Collection hotel. Perhaps they took note of this commenter's observation on our OpenThread in October:
However, the Ritz Phoenix is startlingly dilapidated and dated. I'm surprised it still meets the chain's standards. The lobby is pleasant enough but the rooms and especially bathrooms are ancient and unpleasant.
So far, there's no message on the Ritz site about the closure and we were able to make reservations for July online so the exact closing date doesn't seem to be so set in stone. We're sure that will change soon though.

The hotel news and gossip out of Amsterdam just keeps coming in: perhaps sensing we were somewhat disappointed with Hotel Pulitzer picking Preferred’s LVX Collection after leaving the Starwood fold, a kind tipster dropped us a link to a possible hotel project further down the city’s Prinsengracht canal in the former Palace of Justice.
Dating back to 1664 and 1864, the 15,000 sq m (161,000 sq ft) building was put up for sale earlier this year by the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf (the Dutch government’s real estate agency of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations), complete with glossy interactive pdf that shows how the vast building could be put to different uses – including conversion into a luxury hotel, reportedly one of the last ones the city will allow within its historic core.

· Ritz-Carlton Chicago to Become a Proper Ritz-Carlton: There has been a lot of changes to the Four Seasons portfolio lately and here comes another one--The Ritz-Carlton Chicago, which despite its name, has been a Four Seasons property for quite some time--will drop all association with Four Seasons and become a real deal Ritz-Carlton on August 1. A FlyerTalk member posted this message on the board:
"On July 31, 2015, Four Seasons will be concluding its management of The Ritz-Carlton Chicago (A Four Seasons Hotel). Effective August 1, 2015, the Hotel will become a full participant in the Ritz-Carlton system. This means that the Hotel will no longer be a Ritz-Carlton in name only, but it will be a part of the Ritz-Carlton family of hotels."
Now the hotel will no longer have to correct guests when they get excited about staying at a Ritz-Carlton. Fortunately, those lake views won't change.
· The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Has At Last Declared Independence: After experiencing a rebirth under Jason Pomeranc's Thompson Hotels before becoming a Commune Hotel, the Hollywood Roosevelt is striking out on its own again. The nearly 90-year-old hotel announced that "owners have once again taken over the management reigns, while maintaining a consulting agreement with Commune Hotels & Resorts." There were whispers two years ago that the Roosevelt wanted to go its own way so this looks like a nice a little compromise. The hotel won't be completely independent though as it is now a part of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.
