In case you hadn't already heard, The Revel Resort and Casino in Atlantic City announced that it will officially close its doors and shut down all operations on September 10, only two and a half years after it first opened in April 2012. Hailed as the project that would revive Atlantic City, Revel was never able to turn a profit and was continuously battling bankruptcy issues.

The resort had been a curious case leading up to this announcement. Despite rumors of the potential closing, rates were as high as ever and the hotel is even sold out this weekend. The brass at Revel attributed the resort's demise to a "considerable non-controllable expense structure that financially burdened the property." To us, it sounds like a fancy way to say they didn't do their homework.

Revel said it is going to continue to try to find a buyer during the bankruptcy process, but that even if it does, it will not be until after the resort closes. In total, 3,100 jobs will be lost, which is, of course, sad. And the city is going to have to figure out what to do with the abandoned building if no one wants to give it another go. It's easy to shrug our shoulders at that as tourists, but the locals are the ones who have to bear the aftermath of a botched tourism effort.

Revel's Financing Approved as Summer Approaches the Jersey Shore

April 26, 2013 at 12:58 PM | by | Comments (0)

Last time we checked in with Revel, they were in the process of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Last week, a court judge approved a $250 million financing plan that will allow the hotel and casino to continue its operations, including employee wages, sustaining loyalty programs, and paying its bills.

That’s good news for visitors this summer, who, in theory, shouldn’t see any operational changes if they look to help Revel make a comeback. That said, Revel laid off 83 workers last Wednesday from a variety of positions, so it remains to be seen whether those cuts will have any noticeable effect on the consumer (they still have 3,217 employees, so we’re guessing they’ll be all right).

According to the Associated Press, Revel is also rumored to be considering whether to drop its non-smoking policy, which is thought by many, including HC, to be one of the reasons for the casino’s poor performance. It is one of the few Atlantic City venues to have such a regulation.

[UPDATE] AC's Revel *Plans To File For Bankruptcy

February 21, 2013 at 11:47 AM | by | Comments (6)

[UPDATE: We received an email from Revel's public relations firm who has asked us to reword our story to indicate that the hotel "plans to file a consensual prepackaged chapter 11." ] Things just keep getting worse for the Revel in Atlantic City. On Tuesday, the most expensive casino ever built in New Jersey announced that it will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

While it is a shame to see, we suppose it doesn't really come as a surprise as Revel's performance has not only been under tight scrutiny since its opening last spring, it has also been pretty poor, consistently at the bottom of the rankings when it comes to gambling revenue in Atlantic City. A lot of that disappointment and inability to attract a wide variety of clientele has been blamed on the hotel's non-smoking policy and high-priced restaurants.

Apparently, the house doesn't always win.

Some Celebrities Went Ham Over The Holidays

January 2, 2013 at 6:21 PM | by | Comments (0)

It look like celebs have been living it up over the holidays. So much so, we’ve had to condense it into a mini digest. Here’s what’s been going on with the bold faced and the beautiful.

KimYe Are Expecting a Baybay:Some people announce that they’re expecting with a cute little sonogram or something more demure. Not Kanye West. Nope. He had to deliver the news to thousands of folks at Atlantic City’s Revel Resort in this endearing manner, by saying during his December 30th concert, “stop the music right there and make noise for my baby mama," smiling in the direction of his boo, Kim Kardashian. Yes, that’s exactly how one wants to be referred to when revealed we are carrying your child, Yeezy!

Bettor Believe It! Atlantic City Casinos and Hotels Are Open Again

November 6, 2012 at 9:19 AM | by | Comment (1)

Last we heard, Atlantic City had completely shut down in preparation for the storm, ordering casinos to terminate gambling and hotel guests to be evacuated. That was last Sunday.

Over a week later, much of the Jersey Shore has been devastated, and the Atlantic City boardwalk has all but disappeared, but casinos and hotels are starting to open up once more.

For starters, Revel re-opened on Saturday at noon, with the following words:

"Revel sustained minimal damage and although our team is fully ready, we have elected to reopen tomorrow to allow for residents to return to their homes. We are grateful to our staff for their continued support"

The 740-room Golden Nugget, which recently completed a major $150 million renovation in April, was the first casino to re-open after the storm. In fact, owners were so anxious to get gamblers back in the building that the doors were flung open within hours of Governor Chris Christie's official go-ahead on Friday.

Inside The Revel Resort in Atlantic City

August 23, 2012 at 3:03 PM | by | Comment (1)

We've been chatting about Revel, Atlantic City's newest hotel/casino for a while. The project has been an exercise in patience that culminated in a grand-opening event this past Memorial Day with none other than Beyonce.

We thought it was time to actually go in and take a look now that most of the resort is completed, so you know what to expect in case you book a stay at this behemoth boardwalk property. Here is our experience, in living color:

Our stay coincided with the Atlantic City Airshow and needless to say, the Revel was packed. From our gallery, you'll see just how long the check-in line was. Now, there are kiosks that are supposed to help this kind of congestion, but they were broken.

We were appalled to see senior citizens with canes, wheelchairs and the like being made to wait in what seemed like an endless line, while we, the media, were whisked away to check-in within minutes. When we mentioned this to the Powers That Be, they assured us that this wasn't a normal occurrence to have special-needs customers ignored.

At any rate, the best way to show the Revel is through pics, because honestly, the place really is a sight to see and will give other hotels in A.C. a serious run for their money.

Keep reading to see photos of The Revel!

The Do-It-All Room Remote At Revel Resort

August 21, 2012 at 3:46 PM | by | Comment (1)

Lately we've been entranced with in-room iPads and fancy-dancy remote controls. Both seem to be getting super hi-tech and we're all for it so long as the boasted features actually work. We're not keen on lengthy how-to sheets that give us agita.

We'd like to see the end of multi-remote controls in hotel rooms and instead be able to power nearly everything with a touch of a button. Well, we saw just that recently at Atlantic City's Revel Resort. While our full gallery of A.C.'s newest hot spot is coming soon, today we're hyper-focused on this little gem--the room's souped up Prodigy PLX3 remote control.

The same size as your average TV remote, this little powerhouse actually controls just about everything the buttons on the front panel says it does. And we know because we pressed them all just like a little kid would!

Here's what worked--and the one thing that didn't.

There's More At Revel To Get Excited About Than Just the Food

...actually, we take that back. We're pretty darn excited about the food here.

With just two months to go, the folks at Revel are working overtime to make sure everything is in place for a smooth soft opening next month. Construction briefly stalled in 2009 due to the economy, which in a way lends even more excitement now to the opening of Revel's 1,800 rooms, "theater-inspired" casino, two-acre outdoor SkyGarden, pool, spa, two nightclubs and over a dozen restaurants.

And though not all of the restaurant spaces have been finished yet, we were lucky enough to sample a few dishes from the resort's championing chefs—including Iron Chef winner Jose Garces, who will be opening not one but three restaurants inside the sprawling oceanfront resort. Oh, and his burgers? Awesome. After biting into one, we literally had to stand there motionless (with about seventy other diners swarming around us) until every last morsel had been devoured. And we don't even usually eat meat.

Revel in Atlantic City Will Open Hotel Reservations on March 5

Gamblers and Jersey Shore lovers alike rejoice! Revel, the crazysexycool-looking casino-hotel complex on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, has just announced today that it will open up reservations for its 1,800 hotel rooms and suites starting March 5. The hotel will then soft-open on April 2 with the hotel fully functional and seven restaurants open.

But come May 25 and Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of summer for the Jersey Shore, all of Revel's restaurants, performance spaces, gaming, spa, nightlife and daylife will be open. And they sound freaking amazing, especially Revelry, located 61-feet above sea level and which will house restaurants, shops, nightclubs and a performance space for 700. Revel will also open a theater with a capacity for 5,500 people on The Mezz level (87 feet above sea level) and we're betting the InOut Pool which begins inside near the lobby and flows outside, will be a big hit.
