Spotted amongst other depressing business news at The Wall Street Journal online: More than a month after opening their doors on the Palm Jumeirah, the Atlantis Dubai will be toasting their hotel tonight with a massive $20 million dollar shindig. The recession be damned, the Atlantis is going to party like its 1999 with Kylie Minogue performing and Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra serving as "Goddess of Atlantis."

You heard it here first, folks: D.C. hotels have officially gone, well, coco bananas. Apparently their zeal for inauguration events can’t be contained by normal, or even wacky, price tags, and the top hotel package for Jan. 20th has surged to an unthinkable $440,000 for four nights at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

Leading the loonies, the Omni Shoreham has crafted two package offerings billed to make you "Live Like a President" for the inauguration: the “44th Commander-in-Chief” ($440,000) and the “58th Inauguration” (at a “more reasonable” $58,000). Seriously, it's that cracked out.

Morgans Hotel Group, whose boutique collection includes the Mondrian Hotels, the Delano and Shore Club in South Beach and hip NYC spots like the Hudson and Royalton, has officially won a "Love in An Elevator" award for dealing with the recession.

If you aren't familiar, Love in An Elevator is an Aerosmith song that talks about "loving it up while we're going down." This is pretty much how we feel about the hotels that are attempting to convince consumers to blow thousands of dollars on extravagant hotel packages in a recession.

While layoffs abound and the holiday season is going to be somber, hotels are out there doing their best to persuade people to part with their severance packages. But Morgans Hotel Group has really gone a step further with their new marketing and ad campaign that says, "F@*% the Recession."

Remember those AIG execs throwing around the dolla dolla bills (y'all) at the St. Regis like nobody's business? Well, apparently understanding that they can no longer take excessively lavish, ridiculous vacays on the company dime because of the economy and, uh, cause everyone is watching them now, they seem to fancy themselves quite the tricksters and have somehow found a way to go on another one of their "retreats" with very little media attention.

Down in Phoenix, AIG folks hit up Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort in Phoenix for something called an Asset Management Conference. Shady, though: according to info WalletPop got from an ABC News report, hotel staffers were ordered to not mention AIG either verbally or on signage.
