Johannesburg Not Blue About Getting a Radisson Blu

Complete with the sassy new Radisson Blu branding, the former Radisson SAS chain has a new hotel in South Africa. The Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton has just opened in Johannesburg and it sounds cool enough to go with the "Blu" title.
Big flat-screen LCD TVs for all, complimentary WiFi for all, and a big wine bar and lounge, this hotel sounds great except for one not-so-cool (well, to us) feature. As part of its ONEwellness Spa and fitness center, it's got this:
an indoor/outdoor jogging course that snakes in and out of the hotel’s public areas.
So they want us to jog, sweaty and puffy, through public areas of the hotel? The hotel designers obviously have a lot more self-confidence in their jogging styles than we do.
Right now rooms are going for 1600 Rand ($180) for a standard room and from 2450 Rand ($270) for a one-room suite including breakfast. Public exposure to your jogging is included for free.

Radisson Blu Hotels Offering 'Jetsetter' Discounts

Radisson Blu, the contemporary, design-focused collection of Radisson Hotels (formerly known as Radisson SAS), has just announced its Jetsetter Weekend Discounts at several of its European properties.
From now until April 30, the hotels are offering 20 percent off three-night weekend stays through January 2010. But you have to book your stay before April 30 and it must include a Saturday night stay. Interestingly enough, the Radisson Blu website is also promoting the same deal for two night stays.
The deal is good at such Blu hotels like the Radisson Blu Hotel, Zurich Airport which has a phenomenal wine collection. We would probably hit up the Radisson Blu Champs Elysees which is located in the former Louis Vuitton headquarters or the Radisson Blu Le Dokhan’s, a new addition in Paris which features a champagne bar (above) and an elevator crafted from a vintage Louis Vuitton trunk. Oo la la.

Drunk on Champagne, High on LV at Radisson Blu Le Dokhan's
It appears Radisson Blu has somehow gotten into our Parisian daydreams, which go a little something like this: frolicking about the city looking at art all day, drinking champagne in an ornate bar all evening, and then riding up a magical elevator made out of Louis Vuitton bags to go to our sweet suite (um, then we eat chocolate and hang out with our lovah and go to sleep).
The brand new Radisson Blu Le Dokhan's, the latest property from the brand formerly known as Radisson SAS, makes the whole fantasy come true well, the first part, anyway. The hotel, located in the 16th arrondissement, features 45 rooms accessible by seriously an elevator made from a vintage Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk. And it's an art hotel, too, with its own art collection on display year-round in addition to traveling exhibitions in the lobby.

Adventures in Rebranding: Radisson SAS is Now Radisson Blu
Happy Wednesday! Here, we wrote you a poem:
Radisson SAS hotels are all changing their names,
'Cause someone thought the SAS part was lame.
The new name of the brand is gonna be Radisson Blu
'Cause rebranding will make 'em all seem cool and new
Yes, these hotels are as chic and modern as can be
As evidenced by the oh-so-2009 lack of an 'e.'
For those unfamiliar with the brand formerly known as Radisson SAS: SAS International Hotels teamed up with the Radisson brand in '94 to build hotels in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to develop the rapidly-growing, super-contemporary hotel chain. By '06, there were more than 150 Radisson SAS properties and by the year's end, SAS let go of the brand and Rezidor operated the hotels.
Today, in conjunction with the grand opening of the Radisson Blu Zurich Airport (formerly the Radisson SAS Zurich Airport), the company announced the a name change from Radisson SAS to Radisson Blu, both marking the end of the SAS affiliation and emphasizing the brand's focus on contemporary, modern design.

Radisson SAS Zurich Has Europe's Tallest Wine Tower

We are pretty easily impressed by anything that's a world's biggest or world's tallest, and so it's no wonder that the Radisson SAS Zurich Airport has caught our eye. It's got Europe's tallest wine tower.
Like we said, we're easily impressed, but then we had to stop and wonder what a wine tower actually is. If you're a touch ignorant like us, we can now enlighten you: this wine tower is a tall glass structure where wine is stored, like this picture of a similar Radisson SAS wine tower at Stansted Airport near London. Apparently the tower includes a system to keep wines at exactly the right temperatures.

Hotel Renovations: Three New Styles at Radisson SAS Hamburg

There's nothing like the mention of a city's tallest building to get us excited about potentially great hotel room views and in northern Germany the 120-meter Radisson SAS Hotel Hamburg is the tallest kid on the block. What's more, it's about to get a very extensive makeover--the year long renovations are set to cost 45 million (US$65m).

International Hotel WiFi: Radisson SAS Makes Free WiFi Even Better

In case you haven't noticed, we are really, really big fans of free WiFi. Which is why we were pleased to see that the already well-performing Radisson SAS hotel brand have extended their WiFi even further.
For a while now, Radisson SAS hotels across Europe have been offering free WiFi to guests in their hotels--and they say that in most cases, this includes in-room access, not just front lobby. We're not quite sure how widely this actually applies, but the policy itself is a great start, and Radisson publishes a long list of their hotels with WiFi.
And this week, Radisson announced that visitors to their hotels will have access to free WiFi too. That means that if you're attending a meeting or conference being held at a Radisson, you can ask the reception desk for a free log-in pass for WiFi access for the day. Do note, though, that if you're wanting to use dial-up or any other kind of access with a physical line, then you'll have to pay.
