The Out NYC Wants You In The Dog House

Hospitality for pets is apparently “the fastest growing sector in the travel market”, which makes all the cute hotel doggies we’ve seen recently seem slightly less cute and slightly more cynical. Joking! Obviously nothing could make those dogs any less cute.

The latest hotel to jump on the furry bandwagon is The Out NYC, which has just opened some Dog House Suites – dog-friendly rooms attached to private courtyards – particularly handy for offleash activities or, we guess, doing their business. Even better, access to the courtyard is via a pet door, so they can come and go while you’re taking care of your own business. They’re not just any old courtyard, either – each has a dog house, fake grass, “faux fire hydrant” (not sure of the appeal of this one) and seats for you humans.

Meet Killington, Nantucket's Golf Cart-Crazy Innkeeper

Other hotels call themselves pet-friendly or talk about VIPooches. On Nantucket, it seems, they speak a little more baldly. Enter the Woof Cottages at The Cottages and Lofts at the Boat Basin: 12 dog (and cat)-friendly cottages on the waterfront, presided over by two resident innkeepers: Killington and Ellie.

Killington, pictured above, loves leaping on a golf cart to greet guests even more than he loves napping. Ellie (the Westie here), meanwhile, concerns herself with the doggie welcome amenities: tennis balls, raw hide bones and on-the-go water bottles being her top picks.

Tuna Melts Our Hearts At WestHouse New York

Does this sound mean? We don't mean it to. In honor of the World’s Ugliest Dog competition last week, we’ve got a very special Cute Hotel Doggy today.

Tuna Melts My Heart is a Chiweenie who was born with jaw problems, including an overbite, hence his, err, spectacular appearance. Having said that, what are we talking about? Quirks are what make real beauty. Tuna is gorgeous by any standard.

Anyways, he is something of an internet celebrity, and was guest of honor recently at WestHouse New York. Or, special resident, as they say there.

WestHouse is a pet friendly hotel and gives dogs a special VIP cushion and a doggy bowl on arrival. Check out their other special resident, and join our sweepstake: is s/he is a real dog or a plush toy?

Jack and Marcus

If there’s anything that’ll make us fall for a hotel, it’s a hotel pet. And although Norman the Scooter Dog is a tough cute-hotel-doggy act to follow, here’s a worthy successor: Jack, the delectable Australian Shepherd here, who lives at the Lone Star Court, an old-motel-turned-retro-hotel in Austin.

Jack actually lives on site – above the front office with his GM roommate, Marcus Latner. But unlike you and me, Jack actually likes his roommate – so he spends the day on property, doing whatever Marcus is doing. Except, that is, when he’s chowing down on a deer antler (one that Marcus especially got for him, rather than the antler table lamps in the rooms).

You know what celebrities are like at hotels. They check in under stupid names. They make ridiculous requests. They draw attention to themselves doing stuff like riding a motorcycle down the hallway.

And they do all that even when they’re a celebrity dog, as they found out at the Loews Madison Hotel in DC last week.

Norman the Scooter Dog (real name: Norman) checked in last week, rolling up to the lobby on his scooter (superb video here), possibly in homage to Led Zeppelin riding a motorbike through the corridors of the Riot Hyatt back in the day.

The Flatiron Hotel Has a New Service for Pampered Pups

When we visited the Flatiron Hotel last year, we told you about the presence of owner Robert "Toshi" Chan's adorable dog, Ponzu who stands guard at the entrance to the hotel's event space Toshi's Living Room, greeting guests with an adorable bark. Toshi clearly has soft spot for pooches, so it's not surprising to hear that he has teamed up with Sleepypod, a Californian pet product company, and other pet brands, including the Honest Kitchen, SimplyFido, and Little Eatz, in an effort to make travel as enjoyable for our furry friends as it is for owners.

Posh Dogs Dine on $51 Meals at Mandarin Oriental Paris

You know we are a pretty opinionated bunch here at HC when it comes to hotels, and one topic that got some serious debate recently is hotels and dogs, or, as one of us put it: what’s up with all this dog sh*t?

Leafing through the room service menu at Mandarin Oriental Paris last week, we came across the above page between the human-focused evening menu and late-night snacks: the posh dog’s choices! We were so not expecting to see this that we actually asked room service whether it was for real, and it sure was. A veterinarian consulted on the ingredients and making sure it’s being cooked to a canine’s liking.

HC Editors Argue Over Hotel Doggy Treatments

February 7, 2013 at 3:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

A contestant in last year's New York Pet Fashion Show

Last week we let you know that the Affinia Manhattan had set up a special “Happy Tails Suite” in honor of the distinguished four-legged guests that would be attending the 137th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

This isn’t any ordinary suite, the bells and whistles where bananas. We're talking doggy treadmills!

Now there’s more. Tomorrow, New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania will host the 2013 New York Pet Fashion Show in the Penntop Ballroom (from 6pm to 11pm, in case you want in).

Our Contributing Editor WakeandWander has made no secret of his…disdain for the OTT pet treatment. But when he heard about all this animal foo-foo lah, he, as we say, lost his ish…

We’ll let him tell you how he feels.

Pampered Pups Won't Sleep Ruff During Westminster Dog Show

We can already hear one HCer now, cuz he's said it before. "This dog sh*t is getting out of hand." Obviously we're going to need to have another battle of the editors, because some of us have cherished pets and others, well, we couldn't keep a Chia pet alive.

So, it was with that in mind that we pondered this news: The Affinia Manhattan will be the official hotel of the 137th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and will be hosting special four-legged guests in their “Happy Tails Suite”.

Ah. That's when things got tight. The snorts happened as well as the "ooh's how cutes!".
There was an exclamation of the "GTFOH" variety.

We proceeded to read on, anyway. Ignoring the distractions and detractors.

The Fanciest Doggy Hotel Ever (No, You Can't Stay, Too)

Go To The Hotel's Web

We already know one HC editor who’d have a few choice words to say about this place that's just come to our attention. After all, he didn’t hold back when the subject of pampered pups came up before.

But with the picture above and the name House of Mutt? It would have been all over. Shut down. Eyeballs outta the building.

Yet we were intrigued about this “five-star luxury hotel for dogs of distinction”. A place for pets who need to relax from the “pressures of modern life”. But, it also seems that humans use this spot as an alternative to kenneling when they themselves are going on vacation. That makes feel a tiny bit better that dogs aren’t getting better treatment than us.

But wait. They are. Now we're kinda mad.

Lake Tahoe's New Drug Den-Turned-Ski Hotel Is Pretty Rad

January 3, 2013 at 12:51 PM | by | Comments (0)

After Euclid's powdery onslaught trapped us in an 6-hour traffic jam en route to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area this Christmas, we sought refuge at the ski mecca's newest piste-worthy pad, Basecamp Hotel.

Hey, if it's good enough for the NYTimes, it's good enough for us -- snowstorm or no!
