The Flatiron Hotel Has a New Service for Pampered Pups

When we visited the Flatiron Hotel last year, we told you about the presence of owner Robert "Toshi" Chan's adorable dog, Ponzu who stands guard at the entrance to the hotel's event space Toshi's Living Room, greeting guests with an adorable bark. Toshi clearly has soft spot for pooches, so it's not surprising to hear that he has teamed up with Sleepypod, a Californian pet product company, and other pet brands, including the Honest Kitchen, SimplyFido, and Little Eatz, in an effort to make travel as enjoyable for our furry friends as it is for owners.

Posh Dogs Dine on $51 Meals at Mandarin Oriental Paris

You know we are a pretty opinionated bunch here at HC when it comes to hotels, and one topic that got some serious debate recently is hotels and dogs, or, as one of us put it: what’s up with all this dog sh*t?

Leafing through the room service menu at Mandarin Oriental Paris last week, we came across the above page between the human-focused evening menu and late-night snacks: the posh dog’s choices! We were so not expecting to see this that we actually asked room service whether it was for real, and it sure was. A veterinarian consulted on the ingredients and making sure it’s being cooked to a canine’s liking.

HC Editors Argue Over Hotel Doggy Treatments

February 7, 2013 at 3:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

A contestant in last year's New York Pet Fashion Show

Last week we let you know that the Affinia Manhattan had set up a special “Happy Tails Suite” in honor of the distinguished four-legged guests that would be attending the 137th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

This isn’t any ordinary suite, the bells and whistles where bananas. We're talking doggy treadmills!

Now there’s more. Tomorrow, New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania will host the 2013 New York Pet Fashion Show in the Penntop Ballroom (from 6pm to 11pm, in case you want in).

Our Contributing Editor WakeandWander has made no secret of his…disdain for the OTT pet treatment. But when he heard about all this animal foo-foo lah, he, as we say, lost his ish…

We’ll let him tell you how he feels.

Pampered Pups Won't Sleep Ruff During Westminster Dog Show

We can already hear one HCer now, cuz he's said it before. "This dog sh*t is getting out of hand." Obviously we're going to need to have another battle of the editors, because some of us have cherished pets and others, well, we couldn't keep a Chia pet alive.

So, it was with that in mind that we pondered this news: The Affinia Manhattan will be the official hotel of the 137th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and will be hosting special four-legged guests in their “Happy Tails Suite”.

Ah. That's when things got tight. The snorts happened as well as the "ooh's how cutes!".
There was an exclamation of the "GTFOH" variety.

We proceeded to read on, anyway. Ignoring the distractions and detractors.

The Fanciest Doggy Hotel Ever (No, You Can't Stay, Too)

We already know one HC editor who’d have a few choice words to say about this place that's just come to our attention. After all, he didn’t hold back when the subject of pampered pups came up before.

But with the picture above and the name House of Mutt? It would have been all over. Shut down. Eyeballs outta the building.

Yet we were intrigued about this “five-star luxury hotel for dogs of distinction”. A place for pets who need to relax from the “pressures of modern life”. But, it also seems that humans use this spot as an alternative to kenneling when they themselves are going on vacation. That makes feel a tiny bit better that dogs aren’t getting better treatment than us.

But wait. They are. Now we're kinda mad.

Lake Tahoe's New Drug Den-Turned-Ski Hotel Is Pretty Rad

January 3, 2013 at 12:51 PM | by | Comments (0)

After Euclid's powdery onslaught trapped us in an 6-hour traffic jam en route to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area this Christmas, we sought refuge at the ski mecca's newest piste-worthy pad, Basecamp Hotel.

Hey, if it's good enough for the NYTimes, it's good enough for us -- snowstorm or no!

Over-the-Top Holiday Happenings at 3 Chicago Hotels

December 6, 2012 at 1:49 PM | by | Comment (1)

Let your pooch whisper her list to Santa at Hotel Allegro's Santa Paws event

With Turkey Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday finished, and Christmas just around the bend, we are smack in the middle of The Holiday Crazies.

It’s that time of year when it’s totally permissible to loose your mind over last-minute shopping, dinner with the in-laws, and over-the-top bouts of feasting, drinking, and spending.

Hotels follow suit, too, with their own spin on holiday madness — something we couldn’t miss at Chicago’s most festive hotels. A Posh Santa meet-n-greet for pets, Bûche bakeoff, and an elevator covered in sugar? Call it cray cray or wildly exciting, but we've just got to let you know what's going on here.

What's Up With All This Dog Sh*t?

October 17, 2012 at 3:34 PM | by | Comments (8)

Seriously - what's up with this new "bring your dog every-freakin-where" hotel trend?

We scratched our heads a bit when we saw hotels were hosting full-on dog-party weekends, but now our scalp is starting to bleed. Hotels are consistently involving pets in their promotions these days, and it's as if no one has ever heard of a dog sitter.

For example: The Surrey Hotel in New York City has partnered with a biscuit company to provide their canine guests with an in-room biscuit menu, where dogs also get a welcome note and their choice of Beef Bourguignon, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Truffle Mac & Cheese or Lobster Roll flavored treats. These pooches are grubbing better than we are! It goes on.

At Giraffe Manor In Nairobi, Breakfast Is A Truly Communal Experience

Where: Nairobi, Kenya
August 16, 2012 at 9:04 AM | by | Comments (2)

It sounds like breakfast at Giraffe Manor is well worth getting up for—and not just for the coffee. Located in Nairobi, the 140-acre estate is home to eight endangered Rothschild giraffes, which are apparently some of the rarest on earth. And in the mornings, they like to put on a little show.

Guests are discouraged from approaching the animals as they roam the land, but it's a whole different story at 9am when the giraffes show up outside the hotel, poke their heads in through the windows and eat directly off the table like humans. Apparently, the protein pellets the kitchen serves up are some of the best in the area.

Why Dogs, Not Just Pretty Women, Love the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire

Our resident celebrity hotel hopper, Josh Flagg is back on TV now with the fifth season of Million Dollar Listing on Bravo. Yet even though he's a jetsetter, Josh is not above staycationing in his hometown of Beverly Hills. And his dog Godzilla always goes along for the fun. After checking out the doggie offerings at the Four Seasons Los Angeles and the Montage Beverly Hills, Josh went to see how the The Beverly Wilshire stacked up.

Scenes for an upcoming movie were filming at my house recently so I had to move out for a while and I decided to take my partner Colton and Godzilla to the The Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel.

We all had a wonderful stay in the hotel which was made infamous in the movie "Pretty Woman." Not only did Colton and I watch the movie on loop but we also reenacted the love-making scene on the piano between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts (joke).

Josh Flagg Discovers The Montage Beverly Hills Will Even Monogram a Pillow for Your Dog

Our resident celebrity hotel hopper, Josh Flagg is back on TV now that the fifth season of Million Dollar Listing on Bravo premiered last night. But life isn't all "house" work for Josh. As soon as filming finished, he packed up and resumed his whirlwind travels. Today he returns to his old stomping grounds--Beverly Hills--by staycationing at the Montage.

Colton and I have Godzilla registered as a service dog so we don't even call ahead of time anymore when we bring her on planes or to hotels. When I checked into the Montage Beverly Hills on Friday night, I was delightfully pleased to find in my room a dog bed (which was equally as comfortable as the bed... I actually tried it out... I know most mentally stable people usually do things like that) and they brought her a dog bowl and a bottle of water.

Doggie Yoga is For Real at the W Scottsdale

We've heard of htoels hosting a doggie "yappy hour" before but when we were checking out the W Scottsdale on Friday, we did a double take when our host told us the hotel's courtyard space was open for doggie yoga every first Tuesday of the month.

Yes, doggie yoga.

The event starts off at 7pm and owners and their dogs get to socialize for the first half-hour or so (There's an open bar available for humans too) Then it's time to get stretching. The yoga poses aren't that difficult (indeed downward-facing dog is one of the "doga" poses), although they are modified so that your pup can do them too.

The event is free but if you want to spend the night, the W Scottsdale, of course, takes pets thanks to their P.A.W.S. program.
