All this week, HotelChatter contributor Eric Rosen will be telling us about some of the coolest hotel jobs out there. He reached out across the globe to talk to the dynamic folks who do everything from wrangling elephants (and guests!) to designing the latest high-tech gadgetry for your next guest room. So check back every day to see who he’s talking to next.

Today’s cool hotel job is special. Not just in the way that the others we’ve told you about so far this week have been special, but in that the character who occupies this post isn’t even human! No, we’re not talking about a super-intelligent android, or a beneficent extraterrestrial. Rather, we’re talking about man’s best friend: a dog. Namely, a yellow Labrador retriever called Bachelor, the mascot and all-round activity buddy at the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch.

Fairmont's Catie Copley is Having a Birthday Party (Just Don't Ask How Old She is in Dog Years)

You may remember Catie as one of our recent Cute Hotel Doggies of the Day. The Canine Ambassador is a fixture at the front desk at the Fairmont Copley Plaza—except for the days when she’s off doing a book signing with human concierge partner Jim. That's what she was doing on a recent Saturday when we dragged a friend inside the hotel to see if Catie was in house. But of course she was at a book signing! She’s a dog. Where else would she be?

Yet if you live in Boston, or will be in town this weekend Catie Copley is guaranteed to be at her...er...desk. On Saturday in the hotel’s St. James Room at 11 a.m., you can drop in on a V.I.P. party for Catie Copley’s birthday. Even better, no need to work the bouncer or name-drop as Catie's party is open to everyone.

These Dog Concierges Have Written a Book, Have You?

November 20, 2009 at 3:29 PM | by | Comments (0)

It’s that time of the week again: Cute Hotel Doggie Friday! And today we give you not one but two adorable hotel doggies. Because we’re nice like that. Both of these smilin’ fools work for Fairmont Hotels—Catie Copley (the black lab) at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, and Santol (a Bernese mountain dog cross) at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac in Quebec City.

They have the lofty title of Canine Ambassador, and enjoy all the perks that go with it—business cards, email addresses, comfy beds in the lobby, plenty of attention from guests and staff, and of course, their own kids’ book. Catie Copley’s Great Escape tells the story of Catie and Santol each visiting the other’s hotel. It’s the second book for Catie, who is apparently so popular that she has her own merchandise in the Copley Plaza’s store.

More Hotel Halloween Doggies! What more do you want on this Friday afternoon before Halloween? These awesome photos come to us from the Hotel Monaco Alexandria, which held its Howl-o-ween Costume Contest on Thursday. And just to show anyone worried about puppy labor laws that canine concierges do have a chance to clock off and get loose, here is the hotel’s Director of Pet Relations, bichon frise Charlie getting into the Halloween spirit. He’s dressed as chef Derek Simcik from the hotel’s restaurant Jackson 20—right down to the tattoos.

Then there was Scooby, decked out in Oktoberfest lederhosen, who took home the Top Dog award of the evening. (Kudos for hitting two October festive occasions in one, Scoobs!)

Look, we can’t help it. We’re suckers for a pet concierge. And this one takes the cake. At just 4 months old, Labrador Retriever Kora is the youngest Director of Pet Relations so far for Kimpton. She started her job at Hotel Palomar Dallas last night, at the property’s Howl-O-Ween Spooktacular party benefiting no-kill animal shelter Operation Kindness.

Hotel Monaco Portland Puts A New Lab In The Lobby

There are a lot of things we like about Kimpton Hotels, such as the "Forgot It? We Got It?" toiletry-supply service. We also love that the chain is so pet-friendly that The Muse Hotel in New York once hosted a sloth. We'll settle for taking our dog, but even when we can't, Kimpton covers that too. Just like when you forget your toothpaste.

Eight Kimpton properties have "Directors of Pet Relations" on the premises—dogs who essentially hang out in the lobby looking cute and rubbing up against guests in search of treats. The lineup includes a Bulldog, Bichon Frise, and pocket-pup Pomeranian. You can see their adorable mugs here.

This month, a new member joins the pack: yellow Labrador retriever Timmy will join the staff of the Hotel Monaco Portland with a red-carpet debut on Thursday, October 22. Local celebrities on two and four legs will be on hand to welcome Timmy to the hotel, with funds from the party going to Guide Dogs for the Blind.
