The hotel scene in Dubai has long been synonymous with the top global hotel brands with the likes of IHG, Marriott, Hilton, Starwood, Accor, Carlson Rezidor and Hyatt firmly cementing their place across the city. With new regulations promoting mid-market hotel development, the mega hotel groups have been bringing in a variety of their brands ranging from the budget category to luxury.
However, while the "Big 7" continue to grow their footprint in the city, many developers are now looking beyond these hotel groups to either creating their own hotel brands or bringing in new, fresh brands. In other cities, these brands are considered "boutique" or "lifestyle" but in Dubai, they will be done in a very big way, with way more than 100 rooms. One such hotel is even aiming for 1,200 rooms.
Read on about this big small brands making their Dubai debut...
It's been a while since we checked in on the development of the movie studio hotel brand, Paramount Hotels but thanks to a tipster, we've now got an exclusive look at the brand's, er, branding designs, courtesy of & Smith, a London-based graphic design company. *
It's all very similar to what's already on the Paramount Hotels website (indeed, there are even screen grabs of the website) but with larger photos and with some other detailed shots of corporate stationary, "vision brochures", business cards and gift bags.
Overall, it looks pretty predictable for a hotel brand birthed from the loins of a movie studio. Everything is black and gold with glamour shots galore, and the Paramount logo plastered front and center on everything. Yes, it's the same logo that you often see at the start of a Paramount movie. It reminds of a Planet Hollywood hotel, if a PH had five-star amenities.

A few months ago, we told you about the new Paramount Pictures movie-themed hotel coming to Dubai. And now, we have a few more details on that project thanks to a recent interview in Hotelier Middle East.
In it, the CEO of Paramount Hotels & Resorts (keep in mind, this will be the company's first-ever hotel) explains that while Paramount Pictures is one of the biggest movie studios around, and its films are very well-known, people usually aren't able to connect the actual movies to the company (Grease, The Godfather, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, and Forrest Gump were all Paramount movies, in case you were wondering).
Thus, the hotel will attempt to kill two birds with one stone: create the ultimate movie-lover's hotel experience, and by doing so, educate people on the impressive Paramount Pictures back catalog.
The CEO told HME:
"In-room entertainment will be home theatre surround systems inside the guestrooms as a minimum because I’m convinced that this will be a top expectation from all our guests.
We’ll look at themes for the entertainment throughout the year; give each month a theme, so in February with Valentine’s Day it could be love films. The hotels will also have a screening room; a high-end luxury theatre with lounge seating, a multi-functional environment."
Though we had initially reported that Paramount Pictures' first batch of movie-themed hotels would pop up in places like Brazil, the UK, Russia, and Qatar, it looks like the brand's premier hotel will actually be in Dubai.
The city is hardly in need of yet another flashy, Western-themed resort, but Dubai is also exactly the kind of place where something like this would take off. And we're not just saying that. Last week, when the first phase of residences went on sale (the 540-room tower will include both a hotel and luxury residences), they sold out within hours, according to Arabian Business.
Paramount Hotel & Residences is set to open around the end of 2015, and will be part of a complex featuring four 820ft-tall towers. In the center of the complex will be a multi-level plaza featuring restaurants, meeting and event facilities, a screening room, a fitness center, pool, kids club, and retail outlets.
A Paramount Pictures merchandise shop will be a necessary part of this equation too, so if it's Raiders of the Lost Ark* t-shirts you're after, then you're in luck.
Movie studio or resort entrance?
We enjoy a kitschy themed hotel room here and there but we're not so sure how we feel about an entire collection of movie-themed hotels and resorts.
Yet that is exactly what Hollywood movie-making studio, Paramount Pictures is proposing to do with its new venture, Paramount Hotels and Resorts. Bloomberg News reports:
The company is in talks about locations in Brazil, the U.K., the Caribbean, Russia, Qatar, Oman, South Africa and Indonesia, Van Vliet said. The hotels will be opened in large cities and tourist destinations and some will be part of theme parks, resorts or casinos.
Detes are scant on the experience but each hotel will feature "mini-theaters" for guests to use and a library of Paramount films will be available. Rates are expected to range from $250 to $350 a night.
