Meet Paul, The New Hotel Opening in NYC's NoMad Nabe

Another day, another mysterious hotel with a masculine name planning to open in New York City.

Meet The Paul NYC, a 117-room hotel planned for 32 W 29th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue in the heart of the happening NoMad nabe, where millennial hotel brands go to drink craft beer and have serious discussions about the ethics of Instagram filters.

There's not much to learn about Paul from his website. However, on his Facebook page, he's given a little peek into what he's all about.

Obviously, Paul is a millennial. But from his photos, we also learn that Paul's favorite colors are blue and red, he likes cake, magazines and Paul McCartney and he believes in "the more the merrier." Hence, the bunk beds.

There are other room options aside from the bunk beds, including king beds and double beds. But the bunk beds make us think Paul might be an affordable type of spot. And affordable in NYC these days is somewhere between $250 and $300. Ugh.

A lodging report has the 21-story hotel listed for a February opening (even though the website says "Fall 2014") but as this Google Street View from last month shows, there's still a hell of a lot of work to be done. Tsk, millennials.

Roger, Archer, William and even Tommie. So many hotels with man names, so little time.

We're Trying to Keep Cool But The SLS New York May Open in February

For us, hotel opening dates are very much like blind dates--we have very low expectations of them turning out to be good and most times, we don't even expect them to show up. So we're taking the new opening date of the SLS New York very casually.

But there's a little part of us that is hopeful the hotel will be the man of our dreams, er, open in February as planned.

The website for the Park Avenue hotel in the NoMad nabe is still listing "2015" as the their opening date but a recent lodging report has it pegged for February. The hotel will have 190 rooms, designed by Philippe Starck, along with different restaurant and lounge concepts from other SLS hotels and a rooftop "experience." The timing could be great too, since the New York Edition will open in April.

We peeped at the hotel's exterior and signage last Fall and there wasn't much to report, but we're keeping the faith that the hotel is further along in the process a year later. After all, we've been waiting for this hotel since 2012 when they promised a 2013 opening date. So, you know, it's kinda like they owe us to open in February now.

The Martha Washington Hotel in NYC is Now Open to Everyone

Back in May, when King & Grove Hotels changed their name to Chelsea Hotels, in honor of their flagship property, we noticed that the King & Grove New York on East 29th Street would be reopening soon as the Martha Washington Hotel. Lo and behold, that day has come.

The 265-room, full service hotel has reverted back to its original name, used when it first opened in 1905, but its original purpose--a hotel exclusively for women--has since changed to a hotel "Exclusively for Everyone."

The guest rooms at the NoMad hotel start at a "Cozy" size, which is essentially a twin bed stuffed into a 140-sq.ft. room. The "Standard" room has 175-sq.ft with a queen bed, while the "Deluxe" size has a king bed wedged into a 300-sq.ft. room. The suites are a little more generous with their space but not much. And as far as we can tell, the room decor has not changed much since the hotel was the Hotel Lola.

If staying here, you'll probably spend most of your time downstairs at Veronica's lobby bar and lounge or at Marta (no "h"), the new Italitan restaurant from NYC restauranteur Danny Meyer of Union Square Hospitality Group (and of Shake Shack fame.) But should you be too exhausted to leave your room, Marta does do room service.

Rates for the Martha Washington Hotel start at $335 a night for a standard room with a queen bed.

Meliá to Open an Innside Hotel inside Manhattan's NoMad Nabe

March 21, 2014 at 2:37 PM | by | Comments (0)

We weren't even aware of the Innside By Meliá hotel brand, but it's certainly on our radar now that Meliá Hotels have announced the Innside Manhattan, opening in the NoMad neighborhood in 2016. Here are the details:

The new Innside Manhattan will be located in a 20-story new-ground-up-construction building on West 27th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. Just a few minutes from the Empire State building, and a short distance from Times Square, the hotel’s proximity to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden provide convenient transportation connectivity along with a privileged location. With 313 rooms, a three-meal restaurant, bar and meeting rooms, the new Innside will complement the flourishing development surrounding the NoMad area.

It's location on the fringe of the NoMad nabe also puts in within walking distance to other popular neighborhood hotels like The Eventi, The Ace and The NoMad.

The Flatiron Hotel Has a New Service for Pampered Pups

When we visited the Flatiron Hotel last year, we told you about the presence of owner Robert "Toshi" Chan's adorable dog, Ponzu who stands guard at the entrance to the hotel's event space Toshi's Living Room, greeting guests with an adorable bark. Toshi clearly has soft spot for pooches, so it's not surprising to hear that he has teamed up with Sleepypod, a Californian pet product company, and other pet brands, including the Honest Kitchen, SimplyFido, and Little Eatz, in an effort to make travel as enjoyable for our furry friends as it is for owners.

Construction is Slowly But Surely Happening on The Tommie Hotel

Tommie Hotel from Thompson Hotels and Commune Hotels won't open until at least 2015 but the good news is, it's really happening.

We drove by the construction the other day at 11 E. 31st St. and saw that the official construction barricades are up, with notices and all. The lot of land doesn't look all that different from when we snapped it on Google Street View last year but there's definitely been some progress. We even spied some building materials at the front of the site.

This will supposedly be the first Tommie Hotel location for the brand with 250 rooms. Tommie is also planning to open another spot in West Soho, also in 2015, with 329 rooms. Since its target guest will be the Millenial market, rates shouldn't get too crazy, somewhere in the mid-$200s a night.

Incidentally, the hotel is right across the street from the Hotel Chandler which has just spiffed up its restaurant and bar. But we don't think either side should fret as they seem to be going after two different age groups, er, audiences.

And yeah, we snapped this picture of the back of a cab. #dedicated #nerd.

We're always on the lookout for hotels with free, working WiFi--not just as hotel guests but as digital nomads too. So in case you find yourself in the increasingly trendy hotel neighborhood of NoMad, The Carlton Hotel at 29th and Madison Avenue has free and fast WiFi throughout the hotel…for everyone. No access code needed.

The hotel, an Autograph Collection Hotel, has a grand bi-level lobby with a small plush seating area where you can work and surf. But we say, head over to the Millesime restaurant and bar where you can nosh on some light fare and sip on coffee as you work on your latest TPS report. Or just update your social media status. You know you're gonna.

The Hotel Chandler is Still Working on a Few (Big) Things

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 12 East 31st Street [map], New York, NY, United States, 10016
July 31, 2013 at 10:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

We peeked inside the newly renovated rooms of the Hotel Chandler last fall yet when we ambled by the hotel yesterday we still saw some construction happening to the entrance of the 1905 Beaux Arts hotel as well as along the entire side left side of the building.

We checked the signs out front to see what the construction was about and they just pointed us to the Hotel Chandler website. We also noticed that the construction work was set to be finished by July 1. Oops.

Going to the hotel's website yielded no answers other than this announcement about the hotel's new restaurant, Juni, which is expected to open on August 19th. The restaurant was initially expected to open in January. But as a consolation to guests, the hotel was hosting a complimentary wine and cheese hour from 5 to 7pm. The lobby bar has since reopened so this social hour is now over.

However, we see a TripAdvisor review that mentioned the hotel is adding more rooms by annexing the small building next door, 18 E. 31st street. That would explain the construction off to the side of the entrance.

King & Grove Picks Up Another Hotel in NYC, The Hotel Lola

Her name was Lola, she was an independent hotel before being picked up by King & Grove.

King & Grove Hotels have been on an acquisition spree since the beginning of the year, picking up the Hotel Wiliamsburg and The Hotel Chelsea as well as planning two hotels for downtown Los Angeles. (We're still trying to confirm if they have picked up The Versailles in Miami. So far, nothing is final.)

Now our deep throat hotel sources tell us King & Grove has added another NYC hotel to their stylish portfolio--Hotel Lola on 29th and Madison.

The Ace Hotel is Getting Even More Competition with a New Mega NoMad Hotel

November 22, 2011 at 9:41 AM | by | Comments (0)

They might actually have to add "Ace" to this sign.

Remember when the Ace Hotel opened in 2009 and it had the North of Madison Square Park neighborhood all to its hipster-hugging hotel self? We actually said back then, "The Ace Hotel is the only building on the block that we would want to enter."

Fast forward two years and we've got yet another hotel coming to the neighborhood to join the Ace, Gansevoort Park, the NoMad and the Flatiron. But instead of boutique, this hotel is going to be big. Like 600 rooms big.

The New York Observer reports that developer Jon Lam is looking to turn four parcels of city blocks at 28th and Broadway into a 600-room hotel with significant retail space at the bottom. Lam already owns the buildings at 1205 and 1225 Broadway which he initially planned to raze and build a 25,000-sq.ft. hotel.

Now he's in talks to buy the buildings at 846 Avenue of the Americas and 1227 Broadway for a 100,000-sq.ft plus building. This mega-hotel will rise between 30 and 40 stories and would open up directly across from the Ace. Ouch.
