The NoMad Hotel Won't Be Threatening Ace NYC Until Winter
The Ace New York has opened. Damn, it feels good to say that. And now that we've watched it (very slowly and painfully) open its doors and have actually spent a night there, it's time to turn our attention to the next hotel that's opening in New York's "NoMad" (that's the apparently-new, cutesy name for the 'hood North of Madison) district: The NoMad, a 160-room property with LEED hopes at 28th and Broadway. Yes, 28th and Broadway so close to the Ace that we even got 'em confused one time.
With Jacques Garcia the designer behind the swank Hôtel Costes in Paris doin' up the rooms in a "chic French bohemian and international feel," this place is set to have a totally different vibe than the funky-grandpa Ace; the emphasis, from what we can glean from the still-skeletal website, will be on luxury.

NoMad NYC Going Green With LEED Hopes and Dreams
While the Ace Hotel wiggles its way toward an opening only a block upstream on Broadway, the NoMad focuses on renovating its historic building into something which will set it apart: LEED status. The NoMad will be aiming for LEED Silver, which essentially means it's being realistic, seeing as how it will have the distinction of being NYC's first renovated hotel with the LEED stamp.
Combine this feat with the fact that Parisian designer Jacques Garcia will be doing up the interiors lush-like, and it's no wonder the NoMad isn't hoping to open until the very last bit of 2009.

On Broadway, It's Going to Be the Ace Hotel vs. The NoMad

The NoMad (left) goes face-to-face with The Ace (right)
Forgive us our trespasses, as even the slyest hotel spies can make mistakes. One week ago, we snooped around the construction site of the ready-to-debut Ace Hotel NY, or what we thought was the site of the Ace. Instead, we zeroed in on another hyped hotel, the NoMad, not due until fall. It was a honest mistake, as both the Ace the NoMad share a block on Broadway and look suspiciously alike, so much so that they are almost indistinguishable at street level.
Although our observations are of the NoMad, they actually apply quite well to the action going on at the real Ace site. The actual Ace still appears very much under construction, with no action behind the street storefronts (from what we observed) and just as little going on in the rooms. In fact, the only way to know that you've arrived at the Ace is either by remembering that as an SRO building, it was called the Hotel Breslin and still bears that sign on the Broadway facade, or by catching the spray-painted "ACE" by the construction entrance on West 29th Street.
