HotelChatter Contest: Who Is Going To Nashville, With a Tan?

July 27, 2009 at 5:25 PM | by | Comments (0)

HotelChatter's Win a Trip to Nashville contest ended last last week and since then our panel of judges has been busy grading entries. Today we are happy to report that we have a winner. Twenty-nine year-old Mike Nielsen of Los Angeles, Calif. and a guest of his choosing will be jetting off to Nashville courtesy of Southwest Airlines and staying at the The Hotel Preston for two nights. Here is Mike's winning entry:

I think, especially if you're staying in Nashville, that a fun, simple room amenity would be an:

ACOUSTIC GUITAR

That would be so much fun! It seems to make sense, and would be very original and entertaining for guests!

Killer idea Mike. We are now working with Hotel Preston to figure out the best, most practical way for the hotel to execute this idea in one form or another. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, Mike and guest are off to Nashville. Huge thanks to Southwest and The Hotel Preston for helping us pull off this contest. And of course, thanks to all of you who entered your dream amenity suggestions. May hotels and hoteliers soon make your amenity dreams come true!

Today Is Your Last Chance To Win a Free Trip to Nashville

July 22, 2009 at 5:18 PM | by | Comments (0)

REMINDER: The contest ends today at 11:59pm EST. So SUBMIT YOUR GUESSES before it's too late!

Hotels have become quite clever these days with their in-room amenities. Like The Wit Hotel in Chicago with its cute wake-up calls or the complimentary laptops at The Lanesborough Hotel in London. We're also partial to the "donut soap" at The James and hotels that have Sony Readers or Kindles. And of course, sexy in-room amenities continue to be popular with hotel guests.

At The Hotel Preston in Nashville, amenities are a big part of the guest experience. A Spiritual Menu is offered to guests so they can choose how they want to say their nightly prayers. And just by pressing the hotel's "You want it, you got it" button on the room phone, a lava lamp, a gold fish, a good book, an art kit, a rubber duckie and even milk and cookies can be delivered to your room.

Now the hotel is seeking to add to their amenity list and they want YOU to come up with their next big amenity offering. What is your ultimate fantasy when it comes to hotel room amenities? For the first time ever, you can actually tell us what that fantasy is and by doing so, you'll be entered to win two free round trip tickets on Southwest to Nashville, plus two nights at The Hotel Preston!

One Hotel That Gets the Christmas Decorations Just Right

While we were busy scouring Flickr for images of the worst Christmas decor in hotel lobbies to make our Five Ugliest Types of Hotel Lobby Christmas Decorations list, we came across a photo from a hotel that nailed the whole festive decorating thing — and won our boozey little hearts.

Behold a grand, sparkling structure (and the beams of light that seem to shine upon it from the heavens): a Christmas tree made of wine bottles in the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville. Seriously, check it out.

The massive hotel is well-known for its Christmas festivities ("A Country Christmas") — which, this year, includes a Radio City Rockettes show and a production of The Grinch on ice — but we're pretty sure we'd skip all of that business to sit under this tree drinking straight through the twelve days of Christmas.

Not One, But Two Alofts Set to Open in Nashville

November 5, 2008 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

A forwarded email announcing Starwood’s plans for two new alofts in Nashville came prefaced with “Two? Really?” Which is a sentiment that’s right-on, especially since there’s already an aloft near Nashville in Franklin.

Alas, some questions are never meant to be answered, so all we have for you are the deets:

Outpost #1 will be aloft Nashville Downtown, located in the city’s historic district, near the Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Wildhorse Saloon and the Sommet Center, home of the NHL’s Nashville Predators. Outpost #2 will be aloft Nashville Airport, near the airport (obvs) and the Opry Mills Mall. The distance to travel between both Aloft is something like 10 minutes. Both hotels are expected to open in 2010.

And there you have it, folks. Nashville: the new aloft hot spot.

HotelChatter Flickr Pool:: Aloft Nashville is All Settled In

We got a morning surprise from Sevensummerz, who dropped this shot of Aloft Nashville into the HotelChatter Flickr pool.

If you look closely, you can just barely make out a bunch of furniture lined up by the front door. It almost looks like a scene from college move-in day -- and we feel like we're watching our newly-grown-up child moving into his first college dorm room... except it's Starwood's child, and they've had so many children they probably don't even get excited about them anymore.

For more photos of the completed Aloft Nashville, hop on over to the Flickr pool.

Room With a Killer View: Funky Downtown in Hilton Nashville

We are suckers for a room with a killer view.  We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.

We've been staring at this killer view until our eyes have glazed over and we're still not sure if it's been photoshopped. Is that funky building on the right for real? The rest of the set from Flickr member paparutzi look 100% authentic, so perhaps this view from the Hilton Nashville is the real deal too, or at least only slightly touched up.

This city view was taken from the tenth floor of the Hilton, from Room 1003 to be precise. This hotel got the thumbs up not only for the view, but also for the location being just "one block from it all" ... and it helped that it was an amazing hotel on the otherwise roadtrip from hell.

No wonder it was good--the Hilton Nashville promotion unashamedly tells that it's the only hotel in "America's Friendliest City" that has all-luxury suites.

Average room rates are getting close to $300 but check for regular specials.

InterContinental Nashville Still a Hole in the Ground

While checking out the Hotel Indigo in Nashville a while back, we walked two blocks away and snapped this photo of the sister hotel in the works for ages, InterContinental Nashville. This project was announced with great fanfare several years ago and after a protracted fight over a beautiful historical structure that was eventually razed, it moved forward in '06.

The developer dug a giant hole and...here we are.

Local office workers have started calling it the "West End Avenue Pond" since it seems to be in a permanent state of being filled with green brackish water.

We're expecting some kind of mutant superfrogs to start jumping out in the spring and the urban mosquitoes will find a new heaven.

Hotel Video Tour :: The New Hotel Indigo Nashville

Like Starwood's W chain, the ICH group's new Hotel Indigo line is a "branded boutique hotel," meant to be hipper than your usual hotel chain, but not so hip that it will put off business travelers. Indigo goes all Zen on us, with a Haiku on the side of the building, moving images projected on the hallway walls, and decorating touches that change with the seasons.

We'll have a full review of the just-opened Hotel Indigo Nashville next week, but meanwhile here is a video tour of room 710, a spacious city view room with two flat-screen TV's and a vaguely mid-20th-century collection of furniture. Enjoy!

Gay Cowboys Ride Into Nashville

If you loved Brokeback Mountain and want to live the real thing, then visit Nashville's Hotel Preston which is rounding up the official gay rodeo crowd.

You never know what you'll find when you surf your destination's tourism site for conventions coming to town. It's not a bad idea though: you could be stuck with 3,000 swingers or be planning a trip when there's a huge shoe convention going on.

If you were planning to stay at the Hotel Preston the weekend nights of October 20 and 21, you'll have to look elsewhere. Rooms are all booked by members of the International Gay Rodeo Association, convening their annual convention. (We imagine that membership is on the rise in these post-Brokeback Mountain days.)

There won't be a lot of lassoing and bull riding going on though; Hotel Preston is just past the airport runway and next to the interstate highway. They've proven that "airport hotel" and "fun" don't have to be mutually exclusive though. We like the whimsical molded yellow plastic sofas and red skylight by the front door, as well as the pet goldfish or lava lamp they will bring gratis your room. The ample rooms have new beds with white duvets, a pillow menu, Tazo Tea, Starbucks Coffee and a CD player with discs to borrow. Plus it's hard not to like the attitude of a place that offers a "Play Hard, Sleep Late" package--complete with bloody marys and painkillers when you get up.

We assume the big outdoor pool and sundeck will be covered in shirtless cowboys that weekend. If that's your scene, you can still rope yourself a room for the night of October 19 to catch the prelude, for $109 to $149.
