Did you know that this year is the 100th anniversary of Mother's Day? Did you even know that Mother's Day is less than two weeks away? Hmm... Well, someone's in a pickle, aren't they?
Lucky for you, The Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach is offering two Mother's Day appropriate packages which are valid through August 15th.
The first, the "Mom and Family Getaway," includes accommodations in two connecting rooms, a welcome gift for Mom and--just so she can be rid of the rug rats for a day--a day membership for two at AquaNuts, a Ritz Kids Club for children ages five to 12, as well as Coast, for 13- to 17-year-olds. Prices start at $489 per night.
If you're feeling really guilty for almost forgetting about Mom, shell out $1,129 per night for the "Pampering Mom Getaway," which includes ocean-front accommodations, 100 roses upon arrival, dinner for two in the hotel's restaurant, with a 100 wine credit and a 100-minute Elemis Aroma Spa Ocean Wrap spa treatment.
Now go book, and don't say we never do anything for you.
[Ed. Note: Welcome to our Good Rate/Bad Rate feature where we look at hotel prices in the same city and decide which one most deserves your hard-earned benjamins. Rates quoted here were captured on April 28, 2008 and are subject to change. Enjoy.]
We went looking at boutique hotels in Chicago to answer a question. How bad would the damage be if a husband wanted to take the mother of his children away for the weekend? We pulled up the nights of May 9 and 10 and came out better than expected, with nightly rates under $200 before taxes at Hotel Sax, Raffaello Hotel, Kimpton's Hotel Monaco, and W Chicago City Center.
So why is a standard at the sorta-hip 3.5-star corporate boutique chain Hotel Indigo nearly $600 (with taxes) for the entire weekend? (Not per night.) That's more than the Good Rate at Affinia Chicago, without the junior suite, the Asti Spumanti, and the edible chocolate body frosting.
They are offering an "Indigo Indulge" package pictured here, but to call it underwhelming would be too kind. For an extra $20 a night you get a dessert to split and some Starbucks coffee. Couldn't we just buy that ourselves for, oh I don't know, $20?!
We've been neglecting Canada lately and we apologize for that. So if you need a reason to visit our neighbors to the North and you just happen to be a member of your local garden club, hit up Ottawa in May for the Canadian Tulip Festival.
Each spring 600,000 people from North America, Europe and Asia travel to see the exotic mosaic these tulips create in the city's parks and open spaces. It's actually a perfect trip for Mom's Day.
The tulip festival runs May 2-19, and about 40 hotels in Ottawa and Gatineau have created a special festival package for visitors. The package includes accommodations, a voucher to receive International Friendship Passports, Tulip pins and entrance to some of Ottawa's other cultural attractions.
One of the participating hotels is the landmark Fairmont Chateau Laurier but there was no availability for the opening days of the festival. There was however room at the Hotel Indigo Ottawa for $139 a night which surprised us because we didn't know they had Hotel Indigos in Canada!
You can purchase festival packages at Ottawa Tourism. Hotel prices vary, with rates starting at $85 per night for double occupancy. The booking page is a little fussy, there's a lot of details to fill out and if you forget to select how many adults will be in the room, a pop-up message won't let you go any further.
The best way to do it is just select the dates you wanna go, select the Tulip Package and see what hotels show up.
Mother's Day is next Sunday, May 11 and if you were thinking of picking up all the usual gifts for mom on her big day like flowers, chocolates, that latest New York Times bestseller, we say get a little more creative. Afterall, moms like to have fun too. (Or at least we think they do.)
So our suggested way of thanking Mom for all her years of love and hard work is with a pedicure, a facial, and lunch by the pool at the decadent Estrella Spa at Viceroy Palm Springs.
The "Mom and Me" Special involves a full-day spa package that offers mom-and-daughter pedis, full-hour facials, wash-and-blowouts, and a makeup application so you two can look your best.
