It's Officially Rooftop Season In New York

April 18, 2012 at 3:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

Nevermind what the bees are up to on hotel rooftops, we're here to remind you that New York has an abundance (literally) of rooftop spaces built for recreational human endeavors like eating, drinking and sunbathing.

One of our favorites, perhaps, is the sun terrace on top of the Peninsula New York. Mainly because we can do all three of those things at once, and then cool down afterwards with a relaxing 60-minute holistic massage. But if lounging on a fancy-shmance sun deck isn't your cup of tea, you've got plenty of other options around the city...

With SLS South Beach fast approaching just across the way, the Delano is getting ready for the new competition by opening a slew of new bars and restaurants conceived by The Light Group.

The latest, FDR Lounge officially opened in the former Florida Room space last week with a special performance by Mos Def. But a few days earlier, Kardashian ex Kris Humphries was seen there testing out the waters.

We're not going to lie: we liked the look and feel of The Florida Room, and not just because Lenny Kravitz designed it. The former space paid tribute to Miami Art Deco while still being thoroughly modern. It had, in a word, personality.

It seemed sudden when we first learned the news that Blue Door Fish was closing and a new restaurant would be opening in its place at the Delano Hotel. It still does, as the revamp has moved at Light Group-speed (heh) and Bianca opens her doors on Friday.

We actually loved the food at Blue Door Fish, so we're sad about that loss but excited to see what the Italian, farm-to-table, Slow Food-movement menu at Bianca actually tastes like.

It's what you've been waiting all year for--The 2011 HotelChatter Awards! We'll be bringing you the best and worst of the year all day today and part of tomorrow. Agree or disagree with our picks? Air your thoughts in the comments below.

Despite a slew of juicy celebrity scoops and noteworthy hotel openings, it seems the one story line you guys just couldn't get enough of this year was in Las Vegas, at The Cosmopolitan. Might that have something to do with a particular bathroom incident that took place last spring in the lobby? Maaaaybe so. But, after three consecutive apologies from the hotel's PR team, we're willing to focus on The Cosmo's other, more appealing qualities—least of all, the fact that it still remains one of the prettiest hotels on the Vegas strip.

And we don't feel at all bad about sharing some of the Cosmo's glory with another crowd-pleaser from this year: New York's Mondrian Soho, which opened to a dizzying array of A-listers during Fashion Week in February.

Mondrian is Now Adding Istanbul to The Notches on Their Bedpost

December 22, 2011 at 9:20 AM | by | Comments (0)

The Mondrian's gal will be getting around soon.

Gosh, it's not even 2012 yet and we're already thinking ahead to 2014. That's because in addition to opening a hotel in London, Mondrian Hotels is planning on opening another hotel abroad--in Istanbul.

The press release put out yesterday by parent company Morgans Hotel Group says that Mondrian, the whimsical and fanciful design brand, will open a 128-room room in Istanbul's Old City area. And the hotel group's new partners, The Light Group will create original food and beverage options for the hotel. There will also be a spa, renovated from an existing historic Turkish bath.

Can't wait until 2014 to test out these new Mondrians? Word is the Mondrian Qatar should open in early 2013. Sadly, the Mondrian Bahamas (yes, Mondrian is going Caribbean) will not be open until 2014. We better rest up because we will be sleeping around a lot in the next few years.

3 Reasons To Get Excited About The Mondrian Coming To London

December 2, 2011 at 9:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

Back in August, we had all the deets on one of London's juiciest hotel announcements in a while: that Morgans Hotel Group would be installing their fourth Mondrian on the South Bank of London's Thames River in 2014. Counting Morgans' two other un-opened Mondrian hotels in the Bahamas and in Qatar, this would actually be their sixth. But hey, we'll count 'em when we see 'em.

In the meantime! Here's a little pep rally for what is sure to be a fab addition to London's growing arsenal of noteworthy places to stay:

#1: It will be bigger than their last one in New York. By about 100 rooms. This new property will have all the class of a Mondrian (think whimsical colors, a subtle, unobtrusive check-in desk, and Alexander Wang condoms) with the added luxury of space: the hotel is housed in a building called the "Sea Container House," for chrissakes!

Here are the Detes on The Delano's New, 'Light'er Look

We learned last month that The Delano in South Beach, one of HotelChatter's 10 Best Hotels in Miami, was getting a major makeover for its restaurant and bar scene but it turns out the refresh is actually extending up into the guestrooms as well.

Come January, guests will be able to use their smartphones as keys. Finally! Someone else aside from the Holiday Inn near O'Hare airport and a random hotel in Sweden is doing this! We're actually so excited about this new technology that we're thisclose to booking a room in January just so we can try it out.

Guestrooms at the Delano, like many of Morgans Hotel Group's other properties, will also feature in-room iPads that will allow guests to order anything they like from the device whether it be room service, wake-up calls, valet parking, etc. While the hallway corridors and the signature poolside bungalow rooms will be updated, the rest of the guestrooms should remain the same.

But downstairs, the scene will be that of an invigorated and evolved Delano Hotel, thanks to the infusion of Las Vegas' Light Group, which Morgans recently acquired.

It looks like the Delano isn't the only Morgans Hotel Group in South Beach that's getting some hot new F&B options. The NY Post reports that the Shore Club has a new poolside restaurant called, Terrazza, and it's already been hit up by R&B singer, Usher who sat down solo.

He occupied himself just fine by “flirting and laughing with an attractive hostess,” a spy says, adding, “He seemed to be asking her many questions to spark up conversation.” The crooner, who is dating manager Grace Miguel, also spent time checking his iPhone and chowing on an arugula salad till a bodyguard met him.

Morgans Making Major Moves in London

October 19, 2011 at 8:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last week, news came out that Morgans Hotel Group would be selling their interest in both The Sanderson and St. Martin's Lane but this didn't concern us too much as hotels sell off their interests all the time without ever losing their management contracts. And indeed, Morgans will still be running both hotels now until the end of time, or 2041, which ever comes first.

But then just the other day, some very interesting news about Morgans came out--the NY-based hotel group would be acquiring The Hoxton Hotel famous for its £1 rooms. Hospitality.Net reports that Morgans has teamed up with Invesco Real Estate to purchase the hotel for about £70mil.

A piece in the Sunday Times also said the Hoxton will then turn into the Hudson London to align it with the Hudson New York. Crazy! And a little sad because we think the Hoxton shouldn't have to give up their identity in this whole trade.

These LA Hotels Will Reward Your Halloween Costume Efforts

West Hollywood is raising the bar for this year's Halloween Carnival, with a Project Masquerade contest that will attempt to pre-determine the most outlandish costume designs. Contestant are asked to submit their sketches to West Hollywood's Facebook page by next Monday, and three creative minds will be rewarded with a free night at The London West Hollywood. On the day of the parade, one finalist will be chosen for the $250 grand prize.

Luckily, The London isn't the only hotel getting in on the fancy-dress action. Several other spots around the city are doing it up with costume parties of their own. So whether you're into Oompa-Loompas or dead British people, we're pretty sure you'll find something that appeals. And if none of these options seem scary enough for you, just be thanksful you don't have to attend any parties at the spookiest hotel of them all.

Morgans Hotel Group To Install The Mondrian Brand in London

August 23, 2011 at 12:25 PM | by | Comments (0)

Morgans Hotel Group has already had an established presence in London with their Sanderson and St. Martins Lane hotels but now it looks like they are taking their Mondrian Hotels brand across the pond as well.

Property Week reports that Morgans will turn the Sea Containers House along the Thames into a 358-room hotel. Interestingly enough, when the Sea Containers was first built in the 1970s it was intended to be a hotel but that plan was scratched at the last-minute and office space was built instead.

Now, the property's developer is itching to turn the place back into a mixed-use project which will include not just the Mondrian but offices, restaurants and retail space as well.

We should probably tell you right off the bat: being the hotel geeks we are, the most exciting thing for us about staying at Clift Hotel some months back was nabbing a limited-edition T-shirt.

It says 'I left my heart in San Francisco' and, in tiny lettering on the back, simply 'Clift'. So cute and cozy! The same could be said for the hotel itself...
