The Shore Club No Longer a Sure Thing

Even though The Shore Club in Miami Beach may cost a pretty penny to spend the night (rates in the high season once fetched $1,000 a night), it looks like the hotel's owners are not immune to the recession woes.

While the Shore Club is managed by Morgans Hotel Group, the hotel is owned by Philip Pilevsky and his son, Michael. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Pilevskys have gone delinquent on their $111.5 million securitized mortgage. Earlier this month, the hotel owners even threatened to close the hotel down but later managed to get another loan to pay the payroll and other critical expenses for the hotel. Yet, that still wasn't enough.

David Hasselhoff may still be a foxy-looking old man but he has the nighttime habits of a 7-year-old. According to the latest entry in the "Hoff Gets Ridiculously Drunk" diary, Hasselhoff got far too sloshed at the birthday bash for Simon Cowell and wet the bed in his room at the St. Martins Lane in London and assaulted a doctor that was called to help him. The Sun reports:

A source close to the star said: "David is very hard to handle when he drinks, often very emotional and aggressive.

"On this occasion he became so drunk he wet his hotel bed - ruining two mattresses - and was becoming a real pain for staff. His assistant Joe Townley was so concerned he called out a doctor. David was furious and lashed out at him - but mistakenly hit the doctor. They decided they had no option but to lock him in the basement until an ambulance arrived."....

Morgans Hotel Group To Take Over San Juan Water and Beach Club

October 9, 2009 at 12:17 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

It's a San Juan-derful day! Ok lame puns aside there is some interesting news in San Juan, Puerto Rico today. First, we learned about the San Juan Marriott's YouTube Concierge and then a tipster pointed us to this press release that announced Morgans Hotel Group would be taking over the San Juan Water and Beach Club Hotel next week. The former managers were Desires Hotels.

The hotel will remain open as it undergoes renovations to transform it into a Morgans Hotel-branded property that will "boost travel and attract a more hip, rich and famous crowd." Our tipster wondered, "Rehab Puerto Rico?" Oh god, we hope not. Then again, we sort of hope so. It's a trainwreck we can't help but watch.

The Ames Hotel Boston is Almost There

October 2, 2009 at 3:05 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

The Ames Hotel from the Morgans Hotel Group was initially expected to open this month but according to the website's reservations system, guests cannot book a room until November 19th. Rooms will start at $299 for a standard room but HotelChatter got a glimpse at some of the construction last night and we wouldn't be surprised if this opening date got pushed back a little further.

The hotel is going up inside the historic Ames building which is rather stately and grand in its appearance but working within old buildings tends to delay hotel opening dates quite a bit. And we just can't imagine how they will finish everything up in time.

Make Your Own Mondrian with Moooi Designs

During a recent stay at the Mondrian South Beach, we were quite taken with the “Sleeping Beauty’s Castle” concept of Dutch designer Marcel Wanders.

After looking back at some of our photos, we wondered if we might be able to recreate the look at home—or at least, parts of it. We’re not too keen on having one of these bug-eyed lady murals staring at us when we wake up every morning.

Hungry for details on all of the new hotels coming to Manhattan in the coming months, but operating on little intel, we are sometimes left to our imaginations. Like our musing about what the Mondrian SoHo will look like. So far, we’ve just seen this rendering, which doesn’t go far in helping us visualize what the hotel will look like in real-life.

Helping the laydees: David Walliams escorts Rosie Huntington-Whiteley home last night

Bungalow 8 London may have been losing its aura a little over the last couple of years, but the swanky St Martins Lane Hotel pulled in a hefty bunch of celebs last night for its 10th birthday party. Although when we say celebs, we mainly mean David Walliams and a coterie of barely legal ladies. Still, barely legal ladies seem to be the cream of the London social scene at the moment, so they actually did pretty well.

The slightly uninspiring invite (on a piece of tracing paper, no less) promised VV Brown, Bungalow 8 DJs and a "special guest". Blah. Instead, what we got was model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Prince Harry’s on-off ladyfriend Chelsy Davy, Bond girl Gemma Arterton, celeb-spawn Kelly Osbourne, and the ever-ghastly Peaches Geldof. Oh, and comedians Alan and Jimmy Carr were there as well.

The Hard Rock and Morgans Hotel Group Are Named in Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 4455 Paradise Rd [map], Las Vegas, NV, United States, 89109
September 2, 2009 at 8:49 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

The Las Vegas Sun reported yesterday that the family of Michelle Hatchel, who died of a drug overdose in 2007 in the Vegas condo of Ed Scheetz, the former CEO of Morgans Hotel Group, have not only filed a lawsuit against Scheetz but have also named The Hard Rock Hotel and Morgans as defendants.

Hatchel had been living and partying with him at his Vegas residence in the weeks before her death--an overdose of oxycontin and cocaine--and Scheetz referred to her as his "girlfriend" in the 911 call. Scheetz has never been criminally charged for any wrongdoing in Hatchel's death. However, he has already settled a wrongful death suit with Hatchel's father for a "substantial sum."

This latest lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Hatchel's mother grandmother, brother and aunt. The new allegations they make against Scheetz are very shocking and they reveal the world of hard-core partying, drugs and sex that he was into during his time in Vegas. And that's where the Hard Rock comes in.

Nine is the Mondrian LA's Lucky Number

Until 2012, you have numerical alignment to thank for month-day-year promotions to knock some bucks off of hotel stays. 09/09/09 might not have the good luck vibes attached to it that 07/07/07 did, but we'll take the discount that the Mondrian LA is throwing our way all the same. Get ready for a parade of nines if you book a room at the West Hollywood hotel, which pretty much epitomizes everything Sunset Strip. (Yeah, that means stilettos, luxury cars, and a lucite-happy interior.)

The biggest deals to be had include offers for Guestrooms starting at $99 per night (valid September 1-10), and Penthouse and Private Apartment reservations starting at $999 per night (also valid September 1-10). That's the Penthouse above. See, we like to aim high here at HotelChatter.

Mondrian SoHo Renderings Strike Terror In the Hearts of Foodies

Where: 9 Crosby Street [map], New York, NY, United States, 10013
July 23, 2009 at 2:14 PM | by Jenna | 0 Comments

Earlier this week, the renderings for Mondrian SoHo's new restaurant — which is being headed up by former Top Chef hottie Sam Talbot — surfaced on Eater. And people hate them. The blog Dreamtard actually posted the renderings first, claiming that the "light fixtures on the walls are actually motorized arms that light up and move as somebody walks by them." Uh, ew.

Choice Eater comments: "This design asks a simple question: What if Tron were haunted?" and "oy, serious uglies." We'll hold back on the commentary, especially given the rendering-to-reality discrepancies that we hope (pray) will come into play to tone some of this down in real life.

The hotel itself, by the way, is a-rising: Curbed took some shots of the facade of the 25-story tower, and the rumored opening date of "later this year" is contradicted by the (typically more realistic) HVS Manhattan Market Overview — which is predicting an "early 2010" opening date for the 274-room Morgans property.

Morgans Offers Packages to Suit Each of Your Multiple Personalities

July 14, 2009 at 9:23 AM | by Jenna | 1 Comment

Hey, remember that time Hilton tried to launch a hotel brand and labeled its targeted guests with cutesy little identities like "The Nocturnal Socialite," "The Eco Innovator," "The Cultural Cognoscente," "The Epicurean Explorer," "The Self-Realized Maverick" and "The Techno[mad]"? well, this is kind of like that — except from a hotel brand that appears to be alive and well and with simpler, slightly less gimmicky little labels and — here's the biggie — deals.

Morgans Hotel Group has just launched a promo called "Who Do You Want to Be," with packages at all 11 properties each customized for the "identity" with which you wish to associate yourself. You've got five to choose from: The Escapist, The Hedonist, The Romantic, The Socialite and The Road Warrior.

The Hudson's Sky Terrace is Open For the Season

Go To The Hotel's Web

May 20, 2009 at 11:55 AM | by Jenna | 0 Comments

Yeah, we know: you've had a hankerin' for some super expensive cocktails up on the Hudson Hotel's Sky Terrace ever since you saw a rerun of that Gossip Girl episode where Blair threw that snoozefest "welcome back from the Hamptons" party for her friends up there at the beginning of the season.

Well, good news, kids: as of last night, the Sky Terrace has opened for the season...to the public. Well, sorta. Yesterday, 150 "of New York’s movers & shakers" got a look at the Sky Terrace at an exclusive soiree with a guest list that included New York big-names Luigi Tadini, Amanda Hearst, Richie Rich, Antony Todd and Susan Shin, with entertainment by singer Alexa Wilding.

The spot has now officially opened up for the summer season and, for the first time ever, access is available to the public (not just hotel guests and private partygoers) — but you have to call the hotel to make a reservation. Ask for the bar reservations line when you call the Hudson, and go from there. All summer long, the Sky Terrace be offering a selection of appetizers, salads and sandwiches from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM every day.
