Meet Snoozebox, The Break-Out Star Of The Glastonbury Festival

July 2, 2014 at 9:50 AM | by | ()

There was one breakout star from this year’s Glastonbury Festival. Debbie Harry? Dolly Parton? No: David Coulthard, the former Formula 1 driver-turned hotel investor, whose latest venture, pop-up hotel Snoozebox, made its Glastonbury debut.

Coulthard describes Snoozebox as “a ‘turnkey’ hotel, delivered to an event and fully operational in 48 hours”. Launched in 2012, they’ve already covered events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the London Olympics and more Formula 1 events than you can shake a stick at; this year, following Glastonbury, they’ll be at the Edinburgh Festival in August and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The rooms basically look like Yotel pods – they’re made from recycled shipping containers. Each houses a double bed and a single bunk, a wet room with shower, basin and toilet, and artwork geared to the event. There are even LCD TVs, free WiFi and air con. Like a hotel, they’re serviced daily, and for Glastonbury, guests were shuttled in a BMW to the festival site, 10 minutes away.

We’ve heard of mobile hotels of course, like Scandic to Go and the AKA Mobile Suite, but the genius of Snoozebox is that it’s geared specifically towards events that usually have accommodation problems. Which is presumably how they can justify the surge pricing: £1995 ($3428) for five nights at Glastonbury, though rates for the Edinburgh Festival start from a reasonable £99 ($170).

Funky Friday: Scandic Hotels Offers Hotel Rooms To Go…Anywhere in Scandinavia

June 27, 2014 at 4:06 PM | by | ()

Welcome to Funky Friday, a new segment we’re trying out which features one photo that we think singularly expresses a hotel’s inner psyche. We look for, and often find, a lot of wacky, wild and wondrous designs that seem to have one thing in common: a Type A personality. So why not have a bit of fun as we all wrap up our week by taking a quick look at some hotels that quite frankly, want our attention.

When medieval kings traveled, they took their beds with them and set up for the night wherever they chose. While not exactly the same situation, Scandic Hotels has a similar, albeit quirky program called Scandic to Go and we’re taking a look at it for this week’s Funky Friday.

'World's Smallest Pop-Up Hotel' To Take London By Storm

February 26, 2010 at 9:15 AM | by | ()

Much like kiddie bloggers, pop-up stores are all the rage in the fashion world. So we're not that surprised that the pop-up concept has shifted to hotels.

The latest pop-up hotel is billed as the "world's smallest pop-up hotel" from VisitLondon.com and Radisson Edwardian Hotels. But this isn't a cardboard box or anything--it's actually an airstream trailer that's staffed with a concierge, a check-in desk, room service, a flat-screen TV, a sound system, fridge and dining room area plus a double bed with "luxury bedding" and most importantly, en-suite facilities.

Passport Magazine reports that the mobile hotel will make its way around the popular tourist attractions in London from March 15-19 but the only way to win a night's stay here is by entering online. The competition closes on March 7 so hop to it! In the meantime, watch the video tour here.
