Loews Hotels to Take Over the Mandarin Oriental San Francisco

2015 is going swimmingly for Loews Hotels. The Loews Chicago is just a few weeks away from opening its doors while the crazysexycool OE Collection is coming together and now, Loews is keeping on with its growth spurt by purchasing the 158-room Mandarin Oriental San Francisco in the city's financial district.

The deal is expected to close in late March which means a name change will happen shortly after that. Given that the hotel was just renovated in 2012, we're not so sure an extensive renovation is needed but we suspect Loews will go through the property and touch up what they can.

We're sad to lose a Mandarin Oriental for the West Coast (the only other one now is in Las Vegas) but Loews is on an exciting trajectory so we'll have to put our faith in them. Besides, nothing can change this killer view from the guest rooms.

Looking for one last night with MOSF? Rates this weekend start at $359 a night with a $50 dining credit.

Four Big Name Hotels On Their Way to Marrakech

January 13, 2015 at 10:30 AM | by | Comment (1)

Much like Bali, the hotel openings keep coming for Marrakech, no matter how crowded it is already. A year after we looked at that long list of options, here are four big name hotels that will open in the next few years: Mandarin Oriental, Park Hyatt, W Hotels, and Ritz-Carlton.

First up: the second attempt of Mandarin Oriental, which should arrive this year after missing a planned 2014 opening. Like Milan, the hotel now has a dedicated website, with a first few interior images. The hotel will have 54 villas, 7 suites, and 2 spa suites – all with their own pool. The seven suites have rooftop plunge pools and are part of the main hotel building, with the spa suites giving over 4,000 square feet and infinity lap pools.

St. Regis Istanbul Is Delayed Until March 1, But Photos Are Here

We optimistically wrote in June last year that both Raffles and St. Regis would be opening an Istanbul hotel before the year was out (and questioned what was happening with Viceroy as well). Raffles may have made good on that promise, but St. Regis Istanbul certainly didn’t: the hotel is now delayed until March 1 (at least).

As a consolation prize, we do have some actual photos from inside the hotel, which will have 118 rooms and suites in the Nisantasi neighborhood. Above a Superior Room, starting at 450+ sq ft. While the overall style is fairly inoffensive luxury, there is some interesting art on the walls, and bathrooms strike a bit bolder note – check it out below.

More, Lots More, On Mandarin Oriental Milan

Eight years ago, Mandarin Oriental announced they would open a hotel in the heart of Milan. A long silence followed, during which the planned 2013 opening came and went. Then, just over a year ago, we saw the four 19th century buildings that will make up the hotel with our own eyes when we walked down Via Monte di Pietà, preparing ourselves for more waiting until 2015.

Shockingly, our calendar tells us that it is now officially 2015, and like magic, we found an actual dedicated website for Mandarin Oriental Milan, with more details and most of all, renderings. Let’s dig in. Above the entrance, which will be a block behind Monte di Pietà on narrow Via Andegari; a quick look at Google Street View shows an imposing gate and rectangular courtyard, where we assume this is a close up of the right-hand corner. Read on for a look at rooms and the spa.

Mandarin Oriental Has Yet Another New Fan...

October 20, 2014 at 4:48 PM | by | Comments (0)

Move over, Morgan Freeman. Lucy Liu is the latest celebrity to come out as a "fan" of Mandarin Oriental Hotels for their ongoing advertising campaign.

Photographer Mary McCartney (yes, as in that McCartney) has photographed Liu arriving at her favorite MO hotel Mandarin Oriental New York. Liu was actually born in NYC and says she loves the hotel's proximity to Central Park, along with their "delicious and comforting" Chinese breakfast. We assume that's the Mandarin Oriental breakfast served at the Asiate restaurant (for $36) and through room service and which includes "Soy Chicken Rice Congee, Poached Egg, Chicken Shu Mai Roasted Pork Steamed BunGinger, Cilantro, Pickled Mustard Greens with a Choice of La Colombe Coffee or Tealeaves Green Teas."

Hopefully, being a fan of the MONY means Liu will now have the $1,000 room rate waived.

Liu joins 27 other existing fans of Mandarin Oriental including Freeman, Cecilia Bartoli, Caterina Murino, Sir Peter Blake, Lin Chiling, Karen Mok, Kevin Spacey, Christian Louboutin, Sophie Marceau, IM Pei, Michelle Yeoh, Jane Seymour, Kenzo Takada, Jerry Hall, Vanessa Mae, Vivienne Tam, Barry Humphries, Frederick Forsyth, Darcey Bussell, Bryan Ferry, Liam Neeson, Dame Helen Mirren, Maggie Cheung, Sigourney Weaver, Sir David Tang, Hélène Grimaud and Sa Ding Ding.

Renowned chef, Daniel Boulud has just opened his 18th restaurant worldwide but his first for Boston--Bar Boulud Boston, at the Mandarin Oriental Boston.

With eight dining establishments already in New York City alone, including the two-Michelin starred DANIEL, this is great news for Bostonians, visitors, and all self-proclaimed foodies. This also marks the third Bar Boulud after New York and London and the second partnership for Boulud with Mandarin Oriental Hotels (there is also a Bar Boulud at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park.)

The design of the new Bar Boulud was handled by Adam D. Tihany of Tihany Design. From the looks of the restaurant now that it’s completed, we think it’s quite simply, spectacular.

Mandarin Oriental Is Coming To Dubai

September 17, 2014 at 8:26 AM | by | Comments (0)

No, we're not sure where it'll fit, either

In a way (a definite way), it’s incredible they haven’t done it sooner – Mandarin Oriental has announced that it’s coming to Dubai.

The “luxurious urban resort” will be on Jumeirah Beach and will open in 2017. The 200 rooms and suites will, of course, undoubtedly be stunning, but the category to really get excited about will be the overwater villas, accessed via a private bridge, each with a private infinity pool and “swim platform”, allowing you to jump straight into the Arabian Gulf. Yes please!

It’s not all bad for the relative paupers in the rooms and suites, either – there will be a “variety of infinity edged pools leading down to the beach”. You’ll also have the run of nine restaurants and bars, including one on a pier with its own private dock. What’s more exciting than that? The signature cake shop, that's what.

Mandarin Oriental Paris Wants You To Selfie Your Way Around The City Of Light

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 251 Rue Saint Honoré, Paris, France, 75001
August 25, 2014 at 9:34 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you thought a designated selfie spot was as vain as things get, think again. Not to be outdone by the Athenians, the Parisians, those undisputed global masters of the pout, have come up with a “selfie package”. This has to be at somewhere millennial or ironic, right? Mama Shelter? Citizen M? Pas du tout! It’s at the Mandarin Oriental. Le selfie 'as well and truly landed.

The Selfie in Paris package nets you a room with breakfast, plus three hours in a private car – with driver and in-car WiFi. The hotel will also provide you with a list of the finest selfie backdrops in Paris, including “lesser known vantage points”, “romantic backdrops” and “other imaginative city sites that provide the perfect backdrop for self expression”.

Secretly thinking this sounds great but outwardly embarrassed about booking a package that’s all about vanity? Here’s your excuse. Any photos you upload on your journey from October to January that are taken at approved MO Selfie Spots, posted on social media and tagged appropriately (full details here) will be entered into a monthly competition to win a one night stay at the Mandarin Oriental.

So really, the Selfie in Paris package is just the cheapest way of staying, right?

Mandarin Oriental Says Bye Bye to Manila, At Least For Now

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Makati Avenue, Makati City, Manila, Philippines, 1226
August 14, 2014 at 9:26 AM | by | Comments (2)

Manila will be saying its goodbyes to one of the oldest luxury hotels in the city next month: Mandarin Oriental will be closing on September 9 after nearly four decades of operating. As much as the décor in the above Deluxe Room feels like it needs an overhaul, the choice was made to shut the 413-room hotel altogether.

A replacement hotel is already in the works, though on a smaller scale. Come 2020 (which sounds terribly far away, but really, half a decade is nothing in hotel years), a brand new hotel with 275 rooms will open. The location will stay roughly the same, in a mixed-use development in the central business district of Makati City; no other details are known at this point.

We Want to Go There: Mandarin Oriental Opens in Bodrum

HELLO LOVER. Forgive us for drooling, but how gorgeous does this rooftop terrace look? Good enough to make us want to book a (one-way) ticket to Bodrum, where this arrival deck will welcome you to the just-opened Mandarin Oriental Bodrum and the appropriately named Cennet Koyu, or Paradise Bay.

There are 109 rooms and suites overlooking the Aegean Sea, all with enough room to roam around in, given that they start at over 700 square feet. Outdoor space is something else they have in common, whether it’s a balcony or actual garden with private infinity-edge pool.

Mandarin Oriental Opens - Swoon - A Mimosa Garden

They had us at mimosa garden.

Really, there’s not much else you need to know. Ok, maybe: Mandarin Oriental Barcelona is opening two outdoor venues just in time to catch that blazing summer heat. One is called Terrat, and is, unsurprisingly, a rooftop terrace. So far, so blah – what five star hotel doesn’t have a rooftop terrace?*

The other one, though, is called Mimosa Garden, which the hotel describes as “a lush courtyard oasis” on the Passeig de Gràcia, the main thoroughfare of the modern Eixample district. It opens every summer and was designed by Bet Figueras, the landscape architect who also did Barcelona’s Botanical Gardens. It’s shaded by olives, cypresses, holm oaks and oleanders, as well as lavender bushes and mimosa trees. See, they mean actual mimosas. But we’re pretty sure you could enjoy a mimosa under the mimosa trees. That would be nicely meta.

5 Not Lame Gifts For Dads on Father's Day

June 12, 2014 at 2:35 PM | by | Comment (1)

You're a good man, Clark.

Dear Dad, we're sorry that you've suffered through years of opening pointless gifts on Father's Day like the bland ties, the boxes of golf balls you didn't need, the fad workout equipment you did need but didn't know how to operate and for that goofy Batman water bottle with "DAD" written on the back in permanent marker (Actual gift I gave my dad. I was 9.)

This year, there's no excuse for ho-hum gifts to give your father this Sunday, thanks to these hotels and their totally not lame offerings.

For The COOL DAD: The Hotel Palomar in San Francisco has put together a "Tie One On & Throw One Back" package that gives men a one night stay at the hotel, a beer-fueled private shopping appointment at the cool casual Bonobos Guide Shop; 20 percent off Bonobos purchases; either a beard trim or a straight razor shave at People's Barber Shop; and a "Get Me a Juice Box" Lunch Box at the hotel's rooftop bar, serving two cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, a thermos filled with a Hot Toddy and a little bar snack. Rates start at $259 a night but the package must be booked two weeks in advance. Go online at www.hotelpalomar-sf.com and use code TIEON or call 866-373-4941.

For The RUM LOVIN' DAD: The Mandarin Oriental New York is offering a special Father's Day rum tasting flight of the Facundo Rum Collection in their Asiate restaurant, the Lobby Lounge and the MObar. Each selection of the Eximo, Exquisito and Paraiso aged sipping rums can also be paired with a cheese plate. Simply sipping on the rums is $65 per person while doing the cheese pairing is $85 per person. Make your reservations by calling 212-805-8800. The tasting ends on Sunday.
