The Fairmont SF and DC Deliver Luxury and a Lexus Hybrid

November 2, 2009 at 3:51 PM | by | Comments (0)

Luxury is synonymous with excess, which in the car world usually suggests the use of high smog-emitting vehicles. Bigger is not always better for Mother Earth, with all that carbon monoxide contributing to her degradation.

A depressing reality, to be sure, but with environmental awareness being so very haute these days, tastemakers and luxury providers are striving to make the good life the green life, too. It's no coincidence that you hear blatant plugs for hybrid cars as stars arrive on the Oscars red carpet, you know. Plush comforts and planet-friendly alternatives can coexist, as LuxuryLink, Lexus, and The Fairmont San Francisco and Washington DC are attempting to prove with special Eco-Chic packages.

Included in the three-night deal for two in San Francisco are accommodations in a special Lexus Hybrid Living Suite decked out in all organic or sustainable materials, use of the 2009 Lexus LS 600H Hybrid sedan, organic wine, and passes to three local green wineries in Napa. In DC, you get a two-night stay for four, including Living Suite digs, use of the same sedan, organic wine upon arrival, $150 in hotel dining credits, and a $100 donation to the National Geographic Society.

Starwood Sells W San Francisco

News outta W Hotels today (well, news besides the opening of W Washington DC): according to the San Francisco Chronicle, Starwood has agreed to sell the W San Francisco to Hong Kong investment company Keck Seng Investments Ltd for $90 million. Per a statement made by Starwood, the sale was made to reduce the 'wood's debt — but never fear, the place will still operate as a W.

But the sale sort of sheds light on the sad-ish state of affairs in the hotel industry:

The high-water mark for San Francisco hotel sales was set around April 2007, when Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces based in Mumbai, India, bought Campton Place from Kor Hotel Group of Los Angeles for about $58 million. That amounted to more than $500,000 per room, nearly 60 percent more than the W's "per-key" price of less than $213,000.

Whew. That W had been for sale since the end of last year, though, so we guess it's good that someone bought the place.

Searching For The Perfect Overwater Bungalow: The Philippines Shows Tender Love

As winter storms brew here in the Northeast, our search for the perfect overwater bungalow is intensifying. Know an overwater bungalow resort hotel we need to check out? Hit us on the tip line.

Turns out HotelChatter has a bunch of daily readers in the Philippines.  Cool. As a hat tip, we picked out our favorite Filipino resort, which just so happens to be an overwater bungalow property, go figure.

El Nido Lagen Island Resort has 18 over water accommodations (51 total cabins) all in a quite, idyllic cove hidden by limestone cliffs and island forests. Furthermore, there is no shortage of castaway activities--snorkeling, swimming with jackfish, and canoeing are all available for guests.

You have to hop a island jumper from Manila, then take a boat (free for guests) in order to get to Lagen Island.  Oh, and there is U.S. State Department travel warning on the Philippines, has been since last June, so you will officially qualify as an "adventurer" upon your return from paradise.

After the jump, we have enclosed a El Nido Lagen Island video, set to Jordan Knight's Tender Love to serenade this resort.  We can't take credit for the video, nor the somehow appropriate soundtrack.  If you don't have our sense of humor, hit mute before pressing play.

Searching For The Perfect Overwater Bungalow: Fiji's First Overwater Option

February 14, 2007 at 9:16 AM | by | Comments (0)

As winter storms brew here in the Northeast, our search for the perfect overwater bungalow is intensifying. Know an overwater bungalow resort hotel we need to check out?  Hit us on the tip line.

Ah, don't you love that new overwater bungalow smell?

Likuliku Lagoon Resort is not only the brandest, spankinest, newest resort in Fiji (opens this month), but it is also the first and only Fijian resort with overwater bungalows.

Fijian hospitality, Melanesian architecture, and an overwater bure over Likuliku Lagoon, what more do you want?

All bures feature air-conditioning, music systems, phones, internet access, a DVD player, and incredible views of the lagoon.

The best part? This place is brand spanking new. No conflicting web hotel reviews to confuse you, yet, no glowing reviews from the travel glossy mags, yet, just you, and whoever you choose to bring with you to enjoy a virgin experience at Likuliku without a cluttered predisposition--that is rare these days. The only thing better would be if this place was named Likulikme--just couldn't help it, sorry.
