The SLS South Beach Opening Party Was Like a Dream, Except Weirder

One afternoon last week, we were loitering in the lobby of the semi-new SLS Miami, when a young man wearing pantaloons and a bandana, dancing by himself and making strange, slow-motion gestures, caught our attention. No, the local insane asylum hadn't reported any escapees—this guy was just part of the Gallim Dance Company, an experimental dance troupe who'd been hired for the hotel's grand opening bash the following evening.
Like any conscientious performer, he was simply rehearsing his moves (he eventually got escorted out to the pool, though, since a few guests complained).
Sure enough, when we showed up the following evening, an ensemble of fairies, geishas and Marie Antoinette lookalikes cavorted near the entrance to the hotel, greeting the 1,000+ guests who turned up to the party. A red carpet was even rolled out along the hotel's side entrance for big-name attendees like Rumor Willis (who performed with her band), Reggie Bush, Emilio Estefan, several cast members from the Real Housewives, and, of course, Lenny Kravitz, who designed the hotel's penthouse suite.

More Hot Hotel Talk With Hospitality Designer Lenny Kravitz

After picking Lenny Kravitz's brain about his designs for SLS South Beach, we wanted more. So without further ado, here's Part 2 of our interview with Kravitz, where we delve deeper into his design inspirations and his hotel must-haves as he travels the world for that other day job of his...
What do you need in a hotel room to be happy and comfortable?
More than just one thing, I like hotel rooms to be thought through. A lot of times there are lots of elements missing. I have to live in a hotel when I’m on the road and it’s not just a place for me to sleep; I have to entertain there. So it’s really about how it flows; it has to feel like a home away from home for me. I want to feel comfortable—like I’m going to be happy chilling out in the room all day. Like I don’t ever want to leave the room.
So, what inspires your designs?
You know how people are … I’m a musician, and people like to keep other people in a box. But you know for me, I design, I’m a photographer, I make music, I’m an actor—amongst other things. That’s the kind of person I am. I have always be influenced by so-called Renaissance men—or women. People in general. I love using different mediums to express myself.

Lenny Kravitz Takes Us into His Design World as He Dishes on SLS South Beach

We've heard why sbe founder Sam Nazarian wanted to work with Kravitz Design Inc.—yeah, that'd be Lenny Kravitz to you—on SLS South Beach. But we wanted to hear from the designer himself. Who wouldn't, right?
Here's what Kravitz had to say about his work on the SLS SoBe penthouse and special bungalow suite...
What made you want to work on the SLS South Beach?
I have always loved this building. And Sam Nazarian is a great hotelier. I love the different things he is doing. Philippe Starck, what can you say? The design icon, guru, whatever you wanna call him, he has just done so much for the world of design and has been an amazing supportive figure for me. I love that we have Jose Andres doing the food — he is a mad scientist, an artist.

SBE's Sam Nazarian Dishes On The Star Designers of SLS South Beach

It's no secret that we're psyched for the upcoming June opening of SLS South Beach. As June 14 gets closer (and we hear rumors that the hotel will soft open even sooner), details of the room decor is starting to trickle out. But what's the official line?
We spoke to sbe founder Sam Nazarian and asked what we can expect from the SLS South Beach rooms designed by Philippe Starck.

Can You Guess Lenny Kravitz's Hotel Hangout in Charlotte?

We know, we know. What a random acting role for musician/hotel designer Lenny Kravitz! Just in case you haven't been up and up on the "Hunger Games" madness, Lenny stars as Capitol stylist, Cinna, in the movie which premieres this weekend.
Yet what befuddles us hotel geeks more than this role for Lenny is rather where he and the cast were staying during filming.
According to the NY Post, Lenny's "ritzy" hotel digs became the "unofficial hangout" for his co-stars.
“My hotel room became the after-hours joint,” Kravitz tells The Post. “Any given night there you’d see me, Stanley [Tucci], Gary [Ross], Woody [Harrelson], Elizabeth [Banks], Josh [Hutcherson], Jennifer [Lawrence.] It was fun.”
You know what this means--it's time to Guess the Hotel!!

When One Lenny Kravitz Hotel Door Closes, Another Lenny Kravitz Hotel Door Opens

Even though Lenny Kravitz's Florida Room at the Delano Hotel is going bye-bye, the rocker turned hotel designer has another bigger project in the works. Kravitz's design firm, Kravitz Design Inc., will be designing an entire floor at the upcoming BISHA Hotel and Residences in Toronto.
The floor will be inspired by the music, art and travels of Lenny Kravitz. And judging from what he recently told the Toronto Star, we kinda wish all hotels could be as sexy as Lenny's hotels:
“It’s going to be plush and lush and comfortable and inspiring,” says the musician in a phone interview from Croatia, where he is on a European tour. “It’s going to be warm, it’s going to be soulful. It has to be elegant and sexy the moment you get off that elevator.”

'Something Lovely's Starting': SLS South Beach Will Finally Open in April 2012

It's finally official--the long awaited SLS South Beach will open in April 2012! This will mark the second SLS Hotel to open after the flagship one in Los Angeles and hotelier Sam Nazarian is pulling out all the stops, combining pretty much all of his restaurant and nightclub hotspots under one roof.
First off, the hotel will feature room designs from SLS hotel designer Philippe Starck. While we only have that above rendering to go on, the rooms still retain the airy and effervescent quality of the SLS in LA but this looks a little, how do we say this?--cozier?
There are no "floating" glass beds and cramped low ceilings, although there will be oversized chaise lounges and the beds do look as if they are levitating ever so slightly. Starck is also doing something a little unusual behind the bed with curtains that feature a painted-on bedroom scheme. Same goes for the "armoire" that "holds" the TV opposite the bed (we saw this in another smaller rendering.) Oh and don't forget to look up, because there's a mirror on the ceiling!

Lenny Kravitz to Work His Hotel Sex Magic on The SLS South Beach

We didn't think it was possible but the hotel scene in South Beach is going to get a whole lot sexier next spring. SLS Hotel South Beach has just announced that Lenny Kravitz is designing some suites for them.
SBE, the parent company of SLS Hotels and run by nightlife man Sam Nazarian, has put Lenny's Kravitz Design Inc. in charge of creating an exclusive bungalow and penthouse suite at the hotel. The bungalow suite will be one of 10 that will surround the pool area and we expect it to be nothing less than the sexiest of sexy suites. But will you make us pancakes in the morning, Lenny? That remains to be seen.
The rest of the hotel's interiors will, of course, be designed by Philippe Starck who has a special arrangement with SLS Hotels. But Philippe is more than down to share the design spotlight with Lenny calling him,
"a weapon of massive construction. He is an explosion of all talents, an unlimited boiling bucket of culture, a daily firework, a tireless explorer. Lenny is incredibly alive. Lenny is a friend."
Awww, Philippe has a man crush!

Lenny Kravitz To Start Tweaking Miami's Shelborne Hotel?

Lenny Kravitz is still jamming...as a hotel designer that is. And judging from his portfolio, the Lenny Kravitz Design firm is strictly a Miami hotel lounge business.
He's already done the recording studio at The Setai and The Florida Room at The Delano and now there's word that he wants to design a Sand Bar Lounge at The Shelborne Hotel.
Page Six reports that he met with Shelborne's owner Keith Menin last weekend to discuss the design detes. Whoever ends up designing it--and we do hope it's Kravitz as the Shelborne needs some coolness on the property--the Sand Bar is expected to open in the Fall. Currently room rates for The Shelborne start at $200 a night.

Snapshots :: Pictures of Lenny Kravitz's Recording Studio at the Setai

Yes! We've finally got our grubby hands on some pictures of the Lenny Kravitz Recording Studio inside the penthouse suite at Setai in Miami Beach and we have to say it's pretty killer.
Now, we wish we needed an album to record. Is it too late to ask our parents for guitar lessons?
One more pic after the jump.

Finally: Lenny Kravitz's Recording Studio at the Setai Has Opened
For so many years, we have heard about this mythical recording studio that musician Lenny Kravitz would be building inside the tony Miami Beach hotel, The Setai.
But we never really believed this studio would come to fruition, especially not after Lenny made the rounds as a hotel lounge designer.
Yet we were wrong to have doubted Kravitz. The digital and analog recording studio created by Kravitz Design, inc. has opened. It's official name is the Setai Recording Studio and it's located in a two-floor penthouse suite in hotel, complete with ocean views and private outdoor patio.

Lenny Kravitz Actually Hangs Out at The Florida Room

Our party animal tipster Gregg passed along this photo to us of Lenny Kravitz hanging out at the Florida Room inside the Delano Hotel a few nights ago. (The gal in the pic is singer Ana Cristina...She's 22 and she MySpaces!)
We like that Lenny's not too cool for his own lounge. But Lenny may not have much time for The Florida Room in the next few weeks as he sets to do some US concerts. If you wanna catch him, wait until February when his tour is done.
