Langham And Hyatt Starting Caribbean Stampede With New Resorts

Do we need more hotels in the Caribbean? Langham and Hyatt obviously think the answer is yes, because our in-box was filled up with info about their new Caribbean hotels this week.
In Port St George in the Bahamas, the Langham gang are planning the Langham Place Resort & Spa Port St George as part of their plans to triple the number of Langham properties within the next three years. It's their first entrance into the Caribbean market but if they're going to reach that tripling goal, we can guess it won't be the last. The 224-room resort is due to open in 2013 and will be part of a fancy new marina development.

Top Chef's Michael V. Rocking It at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena

We love the newest season of Top Chef for many reasons but namely because it takes place in Vegas and our baby sibling, VegasChatter gets tickled to see Vegas restaurants and chefs featured each week.
But we also love it because several of the chefs are working at hotel restaurants including one talented punk rocker chef, Michael Voltaggio, who is now the chef de cuisine at Dining Room at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif. He's also one of the fiercely competitive brothers on the show. Did you see the daggers he gave his older bro after Bryan won the last challenge? Oooweee.
From the hotel's website:
Chef de Cuisine Michael Voltaggio’s celebrated style is described as new American cuisine using classic discipline and modern trends, and he delights in utilizing the bounty of seasonal produce that California offers while showcasing the best quality ingredients from around the globe.

The Langham Place Samui Will Open in November

We usually find plenty of good things to say about Langham Hotels and the Langham Place Samui looks like it will follow the good reputation when it opens later this year. With 77 villas and suites suitable for private getaways or arranged together for group vacations, the Langham gang are promising the same good service we expect along with a few interesting innovations.
One is their idea of "borderless dining" which means you can have a romantic meal in "specially-designed dining retreats scattered in the grounds". We also like the sound of the Portal Surf & Play area, which sounds like a combined WiFi zone and cocktail bar, plus they also have the Splash Bar poolside where you can keep a cocktail handy while watching a poolside movie.

Langham Auckland's Got a Swanky New Spa

Getting all Asian on us in New Zealand, the Langham Hotel Auckland has just opened a Chuan Spa with a big emphasis on traditional Chinese medicine ideas. The spa takes up the entire second floor of the hotel and offers thirty different spa treatments.
The facilities include snail showers (aka spiral showers, but snail sounds more interesting), herbal steam rooms and an "ice experience." There's also a heated infinity pool outside.
To celebrate the opening, the Langham Auckland is putting on a Chuan Journey package: one night in a special Chuan Haven suite for two, an hour and a half of spa therapy for each of you, a 15% discount on any further spa stuff, free parking and late checkout, starting from NZ$639 ($500). The catch (well, sorta catch): there are only two of these Haven suites in the whole hotel, and you can only book them when you're combining them with spa treatment.

Langham Hotel Does Paparazzi Impression in Melbourne

The Langham Hotel Melbourne knows that not everybody's out of credit during the current financial crisis--and so far Australia's not quite as hard hit--so they're ready to make guests feel particularly special with their Paparazzi Glamour Package.
Feeling famous comes at a price. To stay at the Langham in Melbourne for two nights and be thoroughly spoiled will cost you A$4,200 (at least the favorable US exchange rate brings that down to $2,900). Not cheap, but there are lots of luxuries included.

Party On With the Lights Off for Earth Hour at Langham Hotels
Our minds are sorta blown by this whole Earth Hour thing. Look, we're not just in awe of the global scope and general concept of Earth Hour (the period of time starting at 8:30 on March 28th where people across the world will be shutting off their lights to promote their support of taking action against global warming).
But we're also shocked by the sheer number of pop songs about turning off lights that have popped (heh) into our heads as we've written about the various hotel companies observing Earth Hour this year: "Baby When the Lights Go Out" by 5ive. "Turn Off the Light" by Nelly Furtado. "Turn Your Lights Down Low" by Bob Marley. There are so many jams about turning off lights.
And we'd like to sing one of these songs for Langham Hotels, who will be participating in Earth Hour at select properties across the hotel chain.

Invest in BOND at the Langham Hotel Boston

With a nod to its location in the former Federal Reserve Bank in the otherwise sleepy financial district of Boston, BOND at the Langham Hotel is inviting guests to “sip away their sorrows” with a menu of new signature cocktails that take a lighter look at the current economic situation…and that will leave your wallet a little lighter too.
Most of the money-themed cocktails ring up at a recession-busting $14, and include the Penny Martini with Remy Martin VSOP, Crème de Menthe and a dark chocolate stick; the Dime Martini with Stoli Vanilla, Grand Marnier, peach schnapps, champagne, and something called a “flaming orange twist”; the Quarter Martini with tequila, pomegranate and lime juice, and chili flakes; and, of course, the Greenback Martini with Hendrick’s Gin, St. Germain liqueur and a cucumber slice.
Traditionalists can go for one of the drinks named after our Founding Fathers, like the Hamilton, with 10 Cane Rum, mint leaves, sugar and champagne.
Then again, if you’ve really made a killing from the bottoming market, you can take advantage of the new VIP lounge area that was co-created by BOND and Dom Perignon. Just try not to cackle too obviously as you slurp bubbly and grind to the house DJ.

Langham Yangtze to Resurrect Shanghai Art Deco in May
Thinking of abandoning Cancun this summer for something a tad more exotic? Just beyond the hassle of negotiating a visa is Shanghai, and coming in May, its first Art Deco Boutique Hotel: the Langham Yangtze. Having taken over the old Yangtze Hotel masterpiece in 2008 for a renovation, Langham was lucky to have snatched a rare bit of Shanghai's old world architectural glamor.
Since this will be a part of the luxurious Langham line, expect rates to be far higher than they were as the old and generically-outfitted Yangtze Hotel; something like $300 a night versus the $60 of several years ago. For this price and to rival the growing competition among luxury hotels in Shanghai, the hotel has some goodies planned.

Langham London to Unveil Luxe Facelift Soon

The fancypants Langham London will celebrate its glittery re-opening this April, following a two-year refurbishment that cost a cool £80 million (roughly $116 million), during which time the hotel remained open.
Of course, the first stage of the revamp has been done for a couple years now, which included the hotel’s painfully chic bar, Artesian, and restaurant, The Landau.

Inside The Langham Hong Kong
There are classic hotels, and then there are Langham Hotels. If you've ever had the chance to enter one of their grand lobbies, whether at the flagship property in London or closer to home in Boston, then you know how it feels to enjoy one of the truly pleasurable moments of a traditional hotel.
This experience of old school luxury is exactly the thing which Langham Hotels can be said to curate, and yet they've managed to reconcile modern and comfortable rooms with it. During our visit to Hong Kong, we actually stopped into their property in the Tsim Sha Tsui district of Kowloon, The Langham Hong Kong, and got a feel for their Asian presence.

The Langham Hotels group have never given us cause to complain, and we've just come across another neat thing they do that's a bit above the rest.
