Last Minute Deal: San Fran's Bay Bridge Closes, You Get Rooms for $80

September 4, 2009 at 5:32 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

The Hotel Triton.

Thinking about staycationing this weekend? If you live in NorCal, you might be able to get away on the cheap. The Bay Bridge, which connects the East Bay to San Francisco and is part of Interstate 80, is closed until Tuesday, September 8. And because of that closure, two Kimpton Hotels are offering guests a special San Fran Bridge closure rate of $80. A tipster let us know about this deal:

"Approximately 270,000 people commute over that bridge per day" according to Wikipedia. Two Kimpton hotels, the Hotel Triton and Prescott Hotel, are offering a labor day promotion: "Can't Take I-80? Just pay $80" and as always, Kimpton InTouch members get free wifi throughout the hotel. Guests need to use rate code SFB to book, and is available beginning Sunday the 6th through Tuesday the 8th.

We just checked in on those rates and we're happy to report they are ARE available with the promo code. The total cost with taxes is about $92 a night. But just a note about entering in the promo code. You should select Packages & Promotions rate from the Rates Type drop-down menu at the bottom and then enter in the SFB code below. And you're on your way to an $80 room in San Fran for Labor Day.

Still looking for a Labor Day getaway? If you’re one of those hotel guests who pay for the experience and are into the whole super-luxe, rural New England scene, you’re in luck: Winvian, the Relais & Châteaux property made of 18 “cottages” in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills is offering a Labor Day deal, and as of today there is still availability for the weekend.

Starting at just $750 a night (bear with us—this is a deal for the preppy-posh Winvian where rooms started at $999 a night two years ago), you too can play house in a themed cottage designed by a fancy architect (15 of them got to play make-believe when designing their respective chalets.)

It’s a fun, whimsical concept—there’s a Treehouse, a Log Cabin, and a Library cottage—although kind of a pricey way to rekindle childhood memories.

Good Rate, Bad Rate: The Standard or Cooper Square For Labor Day?

September 1, 2009 at 5:14 PM | by juliana | 2 Comments

[It's baaaacck! Welcome once again to our Good Rate/Bad Rate feature where we look at hotel prices in the same city and decide which one most deserves your hard-earned benjamins. Torn between two hotels? Send 'em to us and we'll help you pick the right one. Rates quoted here were captured on September 1, 2009 and are subject to change. Enjoy.]

If you're anything like us (and our mother), you will wait until the very last possible minute to book your flights for your vacation. Hotel rooms come much, much later in the planning process--often the night before. So it's no surprise that you find yourself trying to book some lodgings for an impromptu Labor Day getaway to NYC.

But why come to New York to shack up in a big-box hotel in Times Square? No, you need to experience what everyone is talking/Facebooking/Twittering about. That's why this week's match-up is The Standard Hotel vs. Cooper Square Hotel.

The barrage of hotel deals we've been coming across lately all remind us of one cold, hard fact: Summer is quickly coming to an end. That's bad news for fireworks and outdoor concerts, but very good news for prospective travelers. Capitalizing on the "last summer weekend" rush, many resorts and hotels are offering Labor Day deals that are giving us just the push we need to pack our bags and hop on a plane. Destination this time around: Parrot Cay & COMO Shambhala Retreat in Turks and Caicos.

Spend Labor Day in Scottsdale For Only $95 a Night

President Obama might be requesting privacy in Martha's Vineyard during his vacation but for your Labor Day getaway you can hit up the hotel he checked into a few months back, The Intercontinental Montelucia in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The hotel is offering rooms over Labor Day for just $95 a night through September 7. That includes a $25 daily resort credit and an upgrade to a Kasbah Village Poolside Room or Oasis Village Room (if available.)

The deal can only be found on TravelZoo. Guests must use the code TZ8 to book. We went and tested it ourselves and unlike some other low rates we've seen, this one actually worked. Without the code, a signature room was going for $160 a night. The Presidential Suite, where we assume President Obama stayed, was going for $10,000 a night. Hmmm...we'll pass.

NYT Lures On the Fence Travelers With Last-Minute Labor Day Deals

August 24, 2009 at 11:33 AM | by KatieK | 0 Comments

Hawaii's Four Seasons Lanai at Manele Bay

Though the New York Times isn’t exactly known for relating to the common folk, this weekend the Gray Lady published an article on last-minute Labor Day deals in its Practical Traveler column. Yay for good news, for once!

“The recession has led to a glut of hotel inventory this year, forcing prices down in many vacation destinations. That’s making sales easy to find for a last-ditch summer fling,” the NYT explains, offering examples like $24 rooms in downtown Las Vegas and $178 rates in New York.

Here’s a highlight reel of the article:

* At the Red Roof Inn, get a third night free with discount code 545474.

* At the fancy Four Seasons Lanai at Manele Bay in Hawaii, get four nights for the price of three (rates from $295 over the Labor Day weekend).

* Mexico, obviously, is suffering. Help a neighbor out by scoring 22-percent lower rates in Cancun, as compared to last Labor Day weekend. (Of course, keep in mind that hurricane season runs through mid-October.)

* Check out Tourism Vancouver’s website for a whole slew of third-night-free deals.

* Hotwire’s Travel-Ticker.com found $74 nightly rates at the King George Hotel in San Francisco, which is more than half off their regular rates.

Check out the article for more deals.

The Newest Hotel Rate Gimmick: Hotel Adagio's Special $9.99 Rate

There isn't a very good track record for hotels that do promotions with shockingly low rates. Remember the Leading Hotels of the World's $19.28 fiasco or the recent Copley Square Hotel $18 birthday rate failure? So excuse us for being a little skeptical about the $9.99 promotion from the Hotel Adagio in San Francisco.

The JDV Hotel is advertising a rate of $9.09 for guests who check-in the Sunday or Monday of Labor Day Weekend (September 6th or 7th) and want to extend their stay over September 9th, or 09/09/09. Just to be clear, the rate of $9.99 is for the night of September 9th. Guests must use code 090909 to book.

Sure enough, we went to the website and plugged in this code for dates September 6 through September 10 and could not get the promo code to work.

Kimpton Knocks Back The Rates at Their DC-Area Hotels

August 21, 2009 at 10:54 AM | by KatieK | 1 Comment

The Hotel George on 15 E Street, NW.

There’s a reason Congress recesses in August. No, it’s not really so they can hold angry town hall meetings, but because DC is hellishly hot this time of year. And the only thing worse than sweating-through-their-suits lobbyists is equally sweaty civil servants. (Trust us.)

But! If you can handle the heat—and find indoor activities to keep you cool—DC isn’t such a bad destination this time of year. The mass exodus of locals towards beach houses and boats on the Chesapeake equates into a quiet, pleasant vibe around town. Not to mention, discounts for intrepid travelers!

Case in point: At 11 of Kimpton’s Washington-area hotels, guests who book one weekend night now through Labor Day (Sept. 7) get the second night half off, and guests who book two nights get the third night free. The “Summer Send Off” rate offers a discount of 25 to 33 percent off the best available rate.

Barbeques. Chilled Beer. A three-day weekend. These are standard things associated with Labor Day, and while we appreciate a mellow respite from the work week as much as anyone else, we prefer to use the holiday as an excuse to scour for killer hotel deals.

It's said that Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and, that being the case, we consider it time for one last hurrah before settling into fall's more humdrum pace. We found one holiday rate that we'd normally file under "Too Good To Be True," if the New York Times hadn't been the tip source.

Labor Day "Hotel" :: All Aboard the Queen Mary for a Pajama Party

August 27, 2008 at 12:53 PM | by abigailmschilling | 1 Comment

If you were wondering where you could dust off your slippers from 1930 and button down to your lounging pajamas then we have the place for you.

If you are still looking for something to do over Labor Day, you must join the Art Deco Festival aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Calif.

Now technically the Queen Mary is a boat and not a hotel. But the festival is kind of a stellar deal--$650/couple for two nights plus a slough of bashes, lectures and tours, but it's practically a time machine!

You also get to sleep aboard the restored authentic ship which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Two nights aboard a ship hurtling through the past! Talk about awesome. In fact, Clark Gable even danced aboard this ship in its heyday.
