Hotel Le Récif
It’s always difficult to choose a favorite Indian Ocean brand, of course, but LUX* Resorts would have to be up there: a small clutch of properties in Mauritius, the Maldives, China and Reunion Island, always beautifully done, but not outrageously expensive.
And now they’re expanding in Reunion Island, signing two new management contracts with owners Asian Prosperous Holding Ltd. Up first is a brand new five star hotel in St Philippe, in the south of Reunion. It’ll have 82 pool villas, and is currently under construction, slated for opening next year.

Hotels in exotic locales (starting with M-), they’re just like buses. You wait for one to open, then three come along at once.
It’s not quite as idyllic as Medjumbe – but then that bar is set pretty high. Instead of on a private island, it’s in the north of Mozambique, in pretty Pemba (a sandy peninsula sticking out from mainland Africa). Pemba is also the gateway to the Quirimbas archipelago, where Medjumbe is. Also, Avani is Anantara’s sister chain. Maybe time for a sibling visit?
The hotel sits on the headland overlooking the Indian Ocean, and all 185 simply styled rooms have terraces or balconies, overlooking either the ocean or the gardens. There’s a bar, two restaurants and a Grab & Go deli and “coffee corner”. There’s also a fitness center, spa, tennis courts and not one but four swimming pools. A room this weekend starts from a very reasonable $245.
A Hoppen-designed room
There are few excuses we need to dream of Mauritius. Mauritius + celeb designer redoing a hotel? Super-excuse.
So thanks to Kelly Hoppen for signing up as designer for the LUX* Belle Mare. Not familiar with the property? It was called the Beau Rivage until December, when its owners Naiade Resorts rebranded as LUX*Island Resorts (going for the Wallpaper crowd, anyone?).
The redesign will be fully unveiled in September this year (she's already done the Honeymoon Suites and Pool Villas), but according to the hotel, the inspiration will be “Island Light” – or rather, a “lighter, brighter interpretation of luxury”. Think neutrals with bright – and we’re talking bright - accents of turquoise, fuchsia, apple green, orange, purple and Chinese red.
