It’s (almost) the Fourth of July. Cue the fireworks, grilled meats, and mental images of lassoing cowboys riding through the regal grasslands. Why? Because MURRICA.
But before our nation’s capital heralds the rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air, it will celebrate the July 3 opening of a steakhouse that gets its inspiration from South America: Rural Society, opening tomorrow at the Loews Madison Hotel in Washington, DC. It’s the latest from James Beard Award winner and “Iron Chef” Jose Garces, who has launched about a dozen restaurants across the country.
When you put a food truck into the middle of a hotel-casino, you probably should expect higher prices than the average food truck that dishes out tacos and hot dogs. But at the Distrito Cantina and its funky Distrito Taco Truck at Revel in Atlantic City, we paid way more than we would at our local Mexican restaurant here in LA.
The Distrito Taco Truck is located on the second floor of Revel (or rather, the third floor, since the second floor is the gaming area.) We dined at Chef Jose Garces' Distrito restaurant at The Saguaro Hotel in Scottsdale last year and loved it. So when we saw the taco truck--an actual truck that's been placed inside the casino hotel--we had to sit down at one of the festively decorated picnic benches and try it.

Even though the Saguaro Palm Springs just opened the other week, we decided to eschew the two-hour drive from Los Angeles and instead, hop on a plane to Scottsdale and check out the original Saguaro.
We've been obsessing over this hotel's bright color scheme for months now and indeed, driving towards the hotel we let out a little yelp when we saw the brightly colored walls on the guestroom balconies. Yeah, we're nerdy like that. But how did the hotel measure up in living color? Read our review and peruse our galleries to find out!

Still planning for a May 2012 opening, Atlantic City's newest hotel, Revel, will be recruiting the services of Iron Chef winner Jose Garces for several of its dining options. Having successfully launched three restaurants inside the recently-opened JDV's The Saguaro (including a coffee take-out counter), Garces is introducing another trilogy into the 47-floor, ocean-facing tower.
A tapas bar (Amada), a whiskey bar (Village Whiskey), and a margarita bar with Mexican street food (Distrito Cantina) will help jazz up the AC scene this spring, along with the hotel's dozen other restaurants, three nightclubs, shopping mall, spa, two theaters and (of course) casino.
Garces, who has been selected as the hotel's "gastronomic cornerstone," lives on a 40-acre Pennsylvania farm with his wife and kids in Bucks County—just a quick two-hour drive from the hotel. Maybe if we're lucky, he'll be trucking over some home-grown cabbage and tomatoes for those Distrito Cantina tacos!
