Oh dear. We certainly hope you spent your Sunday evening watching the contestants of this season's Celebrity Apprentice as they attempted to run a few rooms at the Loews Regency Hotel. Because, um, you know how we said reality shows about hotels don't work? We take it back: hotel TV shows most definitely work when you throw Joan Rivers and Dennis Rodman into the mix.

If you didn't catch the episode, no worries: we've got a rundown of what, um, went down when Loews' head honcho Jonathan Tisch challenged the remaining 12 contestants (separated into male and female teams) to step in to take over the management of several rooms (per team) at his NYC hotel.

NYC Hotels Starting to Worry About the Economy

Where: New York, NY
October 21, 2008 at 1:30 PM | by Jenna | 0 Comments

Well, color us surprised: hotels in New York City are starting to hurt. The end of the year is traditionally the strongest for NYC tourism (with parades and outdoor skating rinks and such) -- but booking for hotels over the next few months is falling below last year's levels, while the number of cancellations is starting to climb.

The Sunday New York Times had a rather lengthy story describing the state of the hotel industry in NYC and how it's faring during the economic downturn -- but what does this mean for the guest?

Interviewed in the article (and serving as the primary focus, really) are chain hotel bigwigs: Jonathan Tisch of Loews and Vijay Dandapani of Apple Core Hotels among them, who both report declining occupancy (though the "situation is not yet dire").

The Dish On Our Encounter With Ian Schrager and Jonathan Tisch

September 23, 2008 at 10:06 AM | by Jenna | 5 Comments

Last night, we headed up to the 92nd Street Y in New York City to hear Ian Schrager in conversation with Loew's CEO Jonathan Tisch. The discussion was called "The Future of Lifestyle and Business," and we were totally psyched to geek out and gawk at the J-Man and I-Nasty. And, more importantly, we were ready and waiting to hear about what's up next for the industry from two of the most prominent and influential hoteliers in the biz.

Instead, we mostly listened to Schrager discuss his life, his past and his personal future in business.

Alright, so it was a little bit different than what we'd expected -- but still pretty fascinating. Plus, the Schrage-meister did have a thing or two to say about the hospitality industry and the hotel business in between pieces of his how-I-got-to-where-I-am story. We dish on the talk (and recount a few choice quotes) after the jump.

Ian Schrager And Jonathan Tisch Are Gonna Dish Tonight

September 22, 2008 at 3:48 PM | by Jenna | 1 Comment

Guess what? We're headed to the Hotel Geek event of the century and we're totally psyched about it: Ian Schrager and Jonathan Tisch are slated to discuss the Future of Lifestyle and Business at the 92nd Street Y in NYC at 8:15 this evening -- and HotelChatter will be on the scene to cover the event for you.

Unfortunately for you, the event is completely sold out -- but that doesn't mean we're not willing to take some reader questions straight to the influential hoteliers for you.

So: got something to ask Ian Schrager or Jonathan Tisch? Drop it in the comments by 7:00 pm EST and we'll pick a few to ask tonight. We'll be back with a full rundown -- and answers to your questions -- tomorrow morning.

Inside the 30th Annual NYU International Hotel Investment Conference

June 5, 2008 at 2:14 PM | by AndyG | 0 Comments

[Ed. Note: We have a special report from Andrew Gindy, Cornell hotel student and blogger behind Chocolate on the Pillow, about the Tisch Center's Hospitality Conference that went down earlier this week. It's full of industry happenings and hotelier appearances. Enjoys.]

Hotel investors meet up at the spot in the Waldorf where they get five bars cell reception.

What a crazy last two days! The biggest hotel conference of the year just wrapped up yesterday afternoon at the Waldorf=Astoria after two days full of guest speakers, informative panels, excellent networking opportunities, and numerous cocktail parties. Over 2,500 attendees were there to witness the hotel madness, including us.

Loews Hotel CEO Laments Loss of Customer Service

July 2, 2007 at 12:32 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Jonathan Tisch is the chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels an 18-hotel chain who has recently blogged about the "Lost Art of Customer Service: When Chocolates on the Pillow Aren't Enough" on the Huffington Post blog. Tisch also wrote a book on the same topic with a similar title, Chocolates on the Pillow Aren’t Enough: Reinventing the Customer Experience.

Tisch spends most of his post, pointing out positive examples of customer service--Commerce Bank for having extended hours, In-N-Out for a secret menu, and Build-A-Bear for creating a memorable experience--rather than knocking all the crappy treatment out there.  Yet he doesn't say too much about his own hotels, just this:

As someone who grew up in the hotel business, I've always thought about our customers as more than just people who pay us for a room to sleep in. They're not merely our customers, they are our guests, and what we offer is not simply a transaction, it's an experience. But today, that perspective must apply to businesses and organizations of all kinds. Whether you work in the travel industry, the high tech sector, manufacturing or government, the only way to build long lasting customer relationships is to create great customer experiences.

Also worth a read are the comments under his post where people spout off their opinions on Tisch's post and customer service in general.

Apparently, this is just the first post of what seems to be many from Jonathan Tisch for the Huffington Post's business section. So hopefully he will dish the dirt on Loews Hotels in the future.
