An Inauguration Hotel Story That Will Make You Feel Good
December 4, 2008 at 9:55 AM | 1 Comment

The view from the private 12th-floor balcony of the J.W. Marriott.
Might we suggest you temporarily halt the drinking of any beverages? We’ve got some zany news we’d hate for you to choke on: A Washington do-gooder (no, not an oxymoron) is turning lemons--those greedy D.C. hotels with their surreal recession-be-damned inauguration packages--into some pretty sweet lemonade.
Indeed, the news was announced today that Virginia businessman Earl W. Stafford has booked the $1 million “build-your-own-ball” package offered by D.C.’s J.W. Marriott, with which he plans to host terminally ill patients, wounded soldiers, and other disadvantaged people for the historic occasion. The J.W. Marriott sits smack on Pennsylvania Avenue with a primo view of the inauguration parade route and even has a large 12th-floor balcony for viewing from above.

London's Grosvenor House Gets Grand Renovations
September 24, 2008 at 11:31 AM | 0 Comments

After four years of renovating work the Grosvenor House Hotel has rejoined the ranks of luxury five-star spots to stay in London. Just a couple of weeks back these smiley guys gathered for the official opening. Since it's been taken over by Marriott the hotel now has a (clumsy) new name: Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel.
Clumsy name or not, it sounds like there's nothing clumsy about the Grosvenor's new look. No expense spared--it's really a multi-million pound job--means that as far as luxury goes, there's not much to complain about. The only thing missing is a spa--but that's scheduled to be built and open for 2010.

JW Marriott Grand Rapids is Already Thinking Big
September 12, 2007 at 4:01 PM | 0 Comments

The JW Marriott Grand Rapids in Michigan doesn't officially open until Sept. 19th but the hotel made an exception for these special guests--seven Asian elephants who are performing in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show, Circus of Dreams.
The hotel served the elephants lunch and we sure hope they got the five-star service they deserve, otherwise PETA is going to be pissed. Oh wait, PETA is already pissed at the circus.

Bad Rate :: A Lot of Green on Earth Day at the JW Marriott in D.C.

[Ed. Note: Welcome to our Good Rate/Bad Rate feature where we look at hotel prices in the same city and decide which one most deserves your hard-earned benjamins. Rates quoted here were captured on April 9, 2007 and are subject to change. Enjoy.]
Something tells us this year's April 22 Earth Day event in Washington D.C. is going to get a lot of attention. There should be plenty of fireworks around Capitol Hill, including inside the halls of Congress.
If you plan to attend the Earth Day event but enjoy feeling as out of place as a Greenpeace activist at the Detroit Auto Show, we would suggest the JW Marriott Pennsylvania Avenue. You can mix it up with the corporate lobbyists for $429 or more in a "Quality City View Room." (Travelocity had it listed at $429, Expedia and Hotels.com at $489.)
Rooms that fall under the "Quality Room" designation are only $199 though, which begs two questions. First, what's "quality" about it? Isn't this like a hotel ironically calling its smallest standards "superior" rooms? Second, just how good does a view have to be to warrant a doubling in price?
It's not like you get all that much for your money either, especially compared to this week's Good Rate at Kimpton's Palomar. Here is the amenities description: "One king bed or two double beds. City view. Desk. Wireless Internet access (surcharge). TV with premium cable channels, pay movies, and video games. Coffee/tea maker and minibar. Hair dryer. Iron/ironing board. In-room safe. Complimentary newspaper." Yawn, yawn, and since this is the weekend, so you probably don't even get that 75 cent newspaper.
This impersonal behemoth has 772 rooms and judging by the reviews on TripAdvisor, looks and feels about the same as any other one in the chain. Recycle some of your cash by staying elsewhere.
